As long as no fans are allowed in stadiums home/away matters a lot less.
If fans return then it could matter but it is what it is.
August 16, 2020 at 8:14 am in reply to: 2020 Cardinals Game #7 – Sat. Aug 15 at White Sox (DH G2) #135386It is nice to have Cardinal baseball back.
I am glad MLB has chosen not to mix in politics with baseball after the ‘woke’ 1st games.
The NBA is cutting its own throat to pander to its players – maybe MLB can pick up some extra eyeballs.
Cards have a tough row to hoe but all they have to do is make the playoffs – after that as we all know – anything can happen: see 2004 and 2011.
.500 baseball likely makes the playoffs this season?
August 7, 2020 at 7:04 pm in reply to: 2020 Cardinals Game #6 – Fri., August 7 vs. Cubs – postponed #134665Too many double headers.
Injury bug will be worse than usual thus year.
What a mess.
I think this is going to be more than a lost week for the Cardinals – more like a lost year.
With the short season everything is magnified.
Somehow the team blew COVID protocol and that is going to result in too many double headers on the back side of the schedule.
Schildt somehow pulled a rabbit out his hat last season but I think the rabbit is already in the stew pot for 2020.
Of course, this time last year at the beginning of August things looked pretty grim as well….. but I don’t think lightning strikes twice.
Based on how much of the season has already been lost (over half) I’d rather just see this season scrapped and let both sides start working on next season and beyond.
Between COVID and all the social unrest and all the agendas that go along with both I don’t want baseball to be used as just another pawn in one or both of these situations.
Just my opinion.
Probably dealing with a moving target financially and it’s a complex enough situation that probably on one posting here fully understands all the moving parts.
I don’t expect any business owner to operate at a loss. If they choose to, fine.
The players are employees. If they make a roster they have a choice about whether or not they want to play baseball for a living.
If enough players get fed up they can go start their own league – don’t believe it would be the first time?
Personally, I would like to watch some baseball but if they don’t play then they don’t play – not much we can do about it.
MLB is the owners and players calf to kill if that’s what they want to do. Watching players in all sports becoming political activists while ‘on the job’ has driven me away from several sports already. May be best if baseball just cancels the season, lets everything settle down, and starts fresh next year.
I can’t side with players on this one.
It’s a strange situation and whatever deal they agree to for this season will not carry forward to the next CBA. Two totally independent negotiations.
The owners should set up a sliding scale for % of salary (loosely based on how federal income tax is paid) not just an across the board number.
Lower salary players should receive a higher % of their salary.
The big boys will take the biggest % cut but obviously still make the most money by far, as they should.
Another angle would be for the Owners to say – based on average expected income per game – here is the total amount of money we can pay a team per game based on an X game season. You players decide how you want to split it up.
Even more or less standing pat as it seems the Cardinals may, so many of them underperformed at the plate last year that you have think there will be some improvement with the offense?
The game badly needs this technology.
Well, that didn’t go well.
1/2 the roster needs to turnover.
Molina and Wainwright are simply too old.
Fowler, Carpenter, Bader can’t hit.
DeJong can’t hit or get on base but does have some power. You can have one or two like this in the line up but not 5-6
Wong and Edman are keepers
Goldschmidt is turning 33 and was a win now acquisition. Needs to hit for a better average and have a better OBP
Ozuna – see Goldschmidt
I like a starting rotation built around Flaherty, Hudson, and Mikolas (I guess?)
This team is not really built for the future. Lot of work to do on this roster to even think about the playoffs next season…..
No idea what to expect from this team.
No matter what they do this roster is not a stand pat roster.
Too many low ba/obp players in the line up; too many holes in the bullpen.
I guess outside of the Astros, Dodgers, and Yankees every team has serious flaws?
Molina and Wainwright cannot continue much longer, Miller is old, Fowler, Carpenter, and Bader have been disappointing.
DeJong is a disaster at the plate but you can have a couple of weak bats in the line up, his defense is good and he does have power – really good 7 or 8 hitter but not 5th.
Wong and Edmon are keepers.
I like building a starting rotation around Flaherty, Hudson, and Mikolas.
Does Martinez try to move back into the starting rotation and we look for a new setup / closer tandem?
Hicks may or may not ever be the same.
Cards have been amazing since the ASB.
I didn’t see it coming but have enjoyed the ride.
4 1/2 game bulge (5 if we can coax a loss out of the Cubs tonight).
Hoping to ride a strong finish into the playoffs.
That was a regular ass-whipping.
Need to keep it up and go ahead and bury Milwaukee now.
Hopefully the Cardinals can keep it rolling.
I’m really never confidant in this team. Just can’t get there.
Sometimes when guys lose it they just lose it.
Maybe Carpenter can straighten himself out; maybe not. Either way the Cardinals are on the hook for a ton if cash.
Its a season long thing and at this point I’d rather see him stinking up the Memphis line up and getting 4 plate appearances a night until he figures something out instead of sitting on the bench and striking out as a PH every other night.
Bader just has to hit / get on base more or he can’t stay in the line up.
I figure hes got about a week to 10 days to show something (may be a week from right now).
Is Thomas not a better option?
Heck of a game for the Cards.
If they can win the division looks like Flaherty, Hudson, Mikolas as the playoff starters?
Sad to say but Carpenter needs to stay on the bench for the rest if the year. He just never was able to get it together.
A lot of baseball left with a bunch (7?) against the Cubs.
What an interesting season this has turned into.
At 7-13 with an ERA over 4 Mikolas is just a straight up disappointment this year.
I’ve seen really good pitchers have winning records for overall losing teams. Mikolas has done just the opposite.
Gotta win the Sunday game and get out of town with a series split.
It’s been an amazing division race this season, like 2015 with lower win totals.
It’s entertaining for sure.
Reds doing us a solid the past two nights, lol.
Can we catch the Cubs again?
Tune in tomorrow for the next episode of As The NL Central turns….
Well, that completes the 0-5 west coast road swing. 3 1/2 back of the Cubs now.
Flaherty has to be pissed. He basically will have to pitch a complete game shutout to get a win.
Fairly disgusting.
“Incremental improvements were not going to push this team to a division championship. This team isn’t good at anything, and “incremental” improvements aren’t going to change that. Just look at the specifics I posted.”
The Cards are current MLB rankings are 25th in Batting Average, 23rd in runs scored, 9th in ERA, 11th in Quality Starts, #1 in Fielding Percentage (they have the fewest errors and the most double plays turned).
It appears to be the offense that’s killing this team although I think the limited range of some of the fielders, while not showing up in the stats, has allowed some runs to score that might otherwise not have.
It’s desperation time for this season for sure. The Cards are really lucky they are still in the hunt for the division and not sitting 8-10 games out just playing out the string.
On paper this looks like a complete mismatch in favor of the Dodgers so I’ll go with the Cardinals to win.
