Bader made the error, yes.
But then Cabrera became unhinged.
And Schildt brought Webb into a high leverage situation. Webb does not do well in high leverage situations.
Once the Reds had the lead, Schildt brought in Woodford, who was the better option with the bases loaded.
This is about the third loss I will hang on Schildt (Ramirez, 2 Webb losses).
August 21, 2020 at 11:41 pm #136326The original scoring had Bader with the 2 errors. FSNMW was talking about how it should be changed.
No more 3 goats?
Bader
Cabrera
WebbNo Edman LOL
August 21, 2020 at 11:42 pm #136327Yes Webb was a terrible choice. Then again if he doesn’t do well in high leverage situations then what is he doing on the roster?
August 22, 2020 at 3:43 am #136329Good Grief! The game was too late for me to watch live last night. And a good thing too. A five-hit game. Two hits by the winner. Errors, errors. Whatever happened to clutch hitting? I guess the Reds had it. I don’t think I have the heart to watch the MLB replay today. Perhaps I’ll rewatch Thursday’s 9th inning comeback instead.

jj-cf-stlParticipantWith a two run lead Shildt chooses Cabrera to get the final out of the 5th and start the 6th inning. Makes perfect sense. Hopefully Cabrera can get four outs through the 6th and Shildt can use his “when ahead” relievers Gant, Gallegos and Miller to close out the game.
With two out in the sixth and a bases loaded high leverage situation, why does Shildt use Webb? Can he not use use Gant or Gallegos for four outs to finish the 6th and get through the 7th? Why use Webb again for 25 pitches?
Wednesday Webb threw 26 pitches, Gant 13 and Gallegos 7.
Monday Webb threw 22 pitches, Gant 13 and Gallegos 11.Gant and Gallegos were primed to get last nights game to the 9th, but Webb has another meltdown and Woodford gets mop-up duty. Another very confusing bullpen loss.

August 22, 2020 at 8:05 am #136339To jj’s comment, after the game, Shildt said that they are playing the games a little more scripted than they would like, but I doubt they scripted Webb coming in with the bases loaded. The bigger question as noted above is why he was chosen ahead of others in such a high leverage situation. Especially in hindsight, bases loaded in the later innings seemed like the place to bring in your best.
On the relievers available, we know when they pitched last and how many pitches they threw, but we don’t know where the are physically. Not defending the choice of Webb. Just pointing out we don’t always have all the facts they are using to make their decisions.

ParticipantIt will sure be nice to get Helsley, Fernandez, and Hicks back. Century guys.
August 22, 2020 at 8:31 am #136344True. I just watching, it seemed like the key point of the game was the bases loaded situation. That is where you need to bring in your top guy, in this case Gant or Gallegos. You hope to have those guys available for the 8th and 9th, but sometimes your high leverage moment comes before then. And obviously you need to get through that to even be relevant later on.
But most of the time 2 runs won’t win, so the offense takes some heat as well. Goldy’s K with the bases loaded, one out was big. He’s paid to deliver, and did not even get the sac fly. Tough game to watch.

Hicks is not returning until 2021. Fernandez has yet to show consistency and there may not be roster room for him right now, but Helsley is another late-inning option for sure.
August 22, 2020 at 10:02 am #136354I am sure that there must be a stat somewhere that would tell us how many times the Cards have had the bases loaded and scored any amount of runs on that situation. I remember Carps Grand Slam and maybe a couple of singles to drive in runs. Dylan Carlson is particularly snake bit because he has come to bat no less than three times with the sacks full and failed to deliver. My point here is that we are failing to take advantage of opportunities when presented with them. But that is baseball I guess.
August 22, 2020 at 12:01 pm #136376Ok, there is 10 games done since they started playing again. Time to settle in and make a run at the Cubs.
