September 11, 2017 at 11:07 am #32750I remember watching the last game of the Card’s ’64 season vs. the NYM (I live in NY). The Cards needed to win this game because a loss would have put them in a tie with either PHI or CIN. The Phils were playing the Redlegs and won 10-0 behind Jim Bunning’s 19th win. It was very exciting for a 14 y.o. kid brought up to be a Card fan by my uncles. I was a soph. in H.S. and boarded at the school in NJ. I listened to the end of the game on the radio on the drive back to the dungeon. The Cards were going to play the Yankees for all the marbles! ps… the Cards had the starting infield in the ’64 All-Star game, White-Javier-Groat-Boyer.
Curt Simmons started that game and went 4.1 inn. before Gibson relieved and got the win. I went to the 3 series games at Yankee Stadium. Very, very exciting stuff. I can still see Ken Boyer’s grand slam to left to win that 4th game 4-0…. and drinking hot chocolate.
Slaps self…. sorry… just reminiscing. Baseball has always been a big part of my life. I could go on and on.
September 18, 2017 at 10:22 am #33355The St. Louis Cardinals’ playoff hopes took a nosedive over the weekend in Chicago. Starter Luke Weaver continues to pitch well every fifth day. In our history feature, long winning streaks are remembered.
