This is nitpicking, but wasn’t O’Neills arm a major plus? Aka, what is the reasoning of him in LF and Carlson in RF?

Jake Woodford is set to make his ML debut. He was TCN’s No. 8 prospect heading into 2020:

Well hopefully woodford can follow up the first game with a strong outing. I like that schildt is giving some other guys a shot in the lineup. Its going to take the whole team so might as well play em.

    CFICT asked:

Aka, what is the reasoning of him (O’Neill) in LF and Carlson in RF?

Carlson will be the floater, it appears. Not surprising to me, FWIW. Not sending the signal yet that any of the three original OF starters are being displaced.

    Woodford has a 1-2-3, 9-pitch 1st in his debut!

1-2-3 first inning for Woodford in his debut. Only needed 10 pitches. Fastball consistently at 93-94, threw his curveball for strikes and showed a nice cutter, which registers as a slider on Gameday. Worth noting he abandoned the slider after the 2018 season.

I can admit when I’m wrong so here it goes……

I have been a “trade Woodford” protester on here and with my personal Cardinal fan friends for a while. But, after the first two innings, I must admit I was impressed and they basically need 7-8 starters the next 55 days. So I officially remove myself from that distinction until the offseason.

I was also on the “trade Knizner” protest for a while, so that he “still had value”. With Yadi out, having Knizner and Weiters, with all of the double headers, as the two backups is a huge luxury that I can’t imagine any other team having.

    Graceful admission, CFICT.

My experience is that depth is rarely wasted, though it may seem like it in the short term sometimes.

O’Neill seems like he is seeing the ball well by laying off breaking balls, out of the zone balls, etc. That’s extremely encouraging IMO

Carp with a chance to do some damage here in the 3rd.

Carp flies out, and then Luis Robert takes Woodford deep to start the 3rd and it’s 1-0 Chicago.

Ouch! Gotta keep the ball low and away to Robert. That has been his weakness this season.

Woodford has looked very good through three!

The pros and cons of signing Luis Robert were again discussed on the International Signings thread just yesterday morning…

Good work by Woodford to get the grounder and 2 Ks after giving up the big fly.

Cabrera warming up, I would have bet on him getting one of the 5 starts at Wrigley.

Two of the starts are open. Gomber coming off the IL? Reyes?

I guess Cabrera cannot be ruled out if he throws just one inning today.

Carp in a spot to do some damage. The club needs him to get things going.

He got a run home with the ground out to the right side.
