At The Athletic, Mark Saxon has an interview with Mo that is mostly about the trade deadline. I am guessing Anne did not read it. It includes this closing quote from Mo.
“Again, I don’t have a lot of energy right now for the trade deadline. We’re still getting through each day.”

Thanks for the preview, Brian. Lol. That’s what I expect as well. The Cards could use an impact bat, but good luck finding one out there now. I suspect they start looking in the off-season with the hopes of the clearing payroll for 2022 being a buffer for the payroll increase of 2021.
MO and Girsch have a number of guys in the baseball operations department that could be doing a ton of research on possible trade targets and reaching out to other teams.

i dont think there is a lot we can do this year. We need to do as much evaluating as we can this year while trying to win which i agree is hard. I expect some moves during the offseason to get ready for 2021 but whether we get a great hitter, hard to say, is there one out there possible to get.
I have zero expectations for the trade deadline because:
1. The aforementioned obstacles such as 40 man issues, loss of present year revenue, uncertainty about future revenue, etc….
2. We usually don’t do much at the deadline in a normal year.
I could see us maybe adding some bullpen depth but probably not anything major.

I am not writing a trade deadline prediction article because I don’t there will be any trades by the Cardinals.
In my earlier days, I had to reference a lot of technical manuals. The way they formatted the manuals, there were blank pages between the sections when the number of pages were not even. So that those using the manuals did not worry that pages were missing, they always put in this sentence:
“This page is intentionally left blank.”
I guess I should have used that here…
I mean if there was ever a season to be sellers and race to the bottom, I would think this year with a big righty from St Louis occupying a spot in the consensus Top 5 in the draft might be a good chance to try it.

Behind what was my attempt a humor above is a view that the only real way to tank is to get rid of one’s most valuable assets. It is a long-term strategy, not a short, one-time only tweak to try to take advantage of a one-off season of just 60 games. There seems no legitimate way to tank with four weeks remaining in the season.
I meant that to be a little more tongue and cheek (after rereading my post a clear fail), but also because I’m trying to hope into existence the unity of a top prospect from St. Louis and the Cardinals. A guy can hope. I completely agree with your points.
Maybe there is another Liberatore-type trade out there.
I certainly hope so. I wonder if someone like Tyler O’Neill or Alex Reyes or Andrew Knizer could fetch a highly rated prospect from another organization.
I expect the Cardinals to sit this one out. Mo’s comment to the Athletic seems to sum up the situation pretty well for the entire organization. This past week they just seemed mentally fatigued at times … and who can blame them.
This organization has some nice pieces to build around and some pieces that need to be moved. I just do not have a feel that the front office has worked through all those analyses given all that has happened this season.
It is clear that the offensive woes need to be addressed going into 2021. We are seeing performance similar to 2019 minus Ozuna. This offense is simply not good.
A concern I have is with the speed the organization will move. It took the Front Office more than 1,300 plate appearances to determine prior young outfielder’s needed to be moved (Rasmus, Piscotty and Grichuk).
I wonder if someone like Tyler O’Neill or Alex Reyes or Andrew Knizer could fetch a highly rated prospect from another organization.
Looking at this roster and I am not sure I see much outside the arms and Goldy all whom I am guessing are off the market that the Cards could dangle. O’Neill and Reyes neither one have established themselves as every day big leaguers. Fowler maybe, but no one will want to pick up that salary for a short term run.
Maybe there is another Liberatore-type trade out there.
One hitter that I’ve been desirous of for a couple of years is Alex Kiriloff of the Twins. I think he’s going to challenge for batting titles with 30ish HR power and solid OF defense. An OF of Kiriloff-Carlson-O’Neill in some combo could be pretty good. So that type of trade for me would be one that could be good for both teams. They already have a CF so maybe Bader wouldn’t be a change of scenery candidate but perhaps Carlos Martinez and Andrew Knizner could be the starting point in talks.
Definitely need to add a proven outfielder. A trade is the best way. Carlos and Reyes would probably bring in a good bat.
If you are another team, would you really be willing to give up a proven MLB OF for Martinez, who has not pitched an inning since COVID, and the inconsistent Reyes?
Contending teams want players to help them WIN RIGHT NOW, not chancy reclamation projects. Further, which contending teams have an excess of starting OFs they are willing to trade currently?
Generally speaking, contenders deal away prospects for proven players. Do we want the Cardinals to add more prospects to the OF mix?
It talking about contending teams, B. Talking about guys on smaller payroll teams that have a proven outfielder who’s a year or two away from getting expensive.

To be clear, I’m suggesting this more as an off-season sort of trade. I’m not sure anyone is going to do a Liberatore-like trade in-season.
As for adding prospects, sure…if they are as good as Kiriloff. I think he’s going to hit like crazy and any team would be foolish to not explore a trade if an option presented itself. I think Kiriloff might end up better than Dylan Carlson.
We seem to be getting off the track of this thread, which is today’s deadline and the kinds of teams likely to be active and the players that typically move.
To the specific example of Kirilloff, the rumors I have seen have the Twins looking for starting pitching. I don’t think Martinez given where he is right now would get it done. Would you trade Hudson?
