Apparently Clark said to tell us “when and where” and the players are ready to play. The ball is in Manfred’s court.

It sounds like we either have baseball in 2020, or Manfred is in the unemployment line in 2021.

Ground being given on both sides, it appears.

To be clearer, it is fear of a $1 BB grievance that the owners fear they would lose because it is pretty clear they have been dragging their feet in negotiations. Stalling has been an effective tactic for owners’ finances, but it has killed them with the fans.

Olney’s tweet makes no sense. Any agreement involving full pro rated salary could just be implemented. No additional MLBPA approval required.

Olney’s tweet is incomplete, but not incorrect. Yes, Manfred can impose the season, but not with expanded playoffs and not with an agreement from the players to not file a grievance, etc.

Remember that this is not an “agreement”, but the owners’ proposal.

The only reason I listed the tweet here are these words: “60 games” and “starting July 19”.

The fact that he had to mention (highlight) that the meeting was at his request displays an ego that may have been getting in the way all along.

bccran, when I read it, I wondered the same thing…

It apparently took until he was absolutely trashed at about every turn to take some actual initiative.

Also, the health risk issue seems to be an escape hatch for either side to starting the season. This issue could trump all else if they can’t agree on the protocols, assumption of risk, waivers, etc.

In addition to that, they also need to proactively address how issues will be handled when there are positive Covid-19 tests. Otherwise, it might all crumble quickly like in March when the NBA players tested positive. Some plans going into the season might prevent that, e.g., if A happens, then it will be handled by doing B.

Owners might agree to DH in 2021 but I cant see any agreement lasting past that. That is their biggest bargaining chip for new CBA

    from Dayn Perry, CBS:

players seem poised to approve the growth from 10 playoff teams to 16 for the next two seasons, and that of course increases the likelihood that the expanded playoff structure will be adopted permanently in the next collective bargaining agreement.

I’m not at all in favor of expanding the playoffs except in a shortened year like this one. 10 is already too many, so now we will get sub .500 teams making the playoffs on a regular basis. That’s not acceptable.

stlcard25, you know the real rea$on for the expanded playoff$, right?

I do, but I don’t have to like it. After 162 games we have a pretty solid idea of who the best teams are. I’m firmly in the boat that we need to have the Championship Series and World Series and that’s it. But that will never ever happen, for the $$$$ reasons you state. 16 teams is just silliness.

Based on how much of the season has already been lost (over half) I’d rather just see this season scrapped and let both sides start working on next season and beyond.

Between COVID and all the social unrest and all the agendas that go along with both I don’t want baseball to be used as just another pawn in one or both of these situations.

    Just my opinion.

Key question. What comprises a meaningful season as far as the fans are concerned? Originally I felt it was 81 games plus the playoffs.
