On my mind as I am at work early today…Bader and Sosa are the 2 guys I think of that really get more fired up than anyone when they got a big hit. I agree with Sosa leaving as I never saw him as a full timer and I get the sense he might grumble about playing time. I hate to see Bader leave but his style of play leads to likely eventual breakdown and diminishment of skill. We got him during his cheap years and likely best defence and we really need Montgomery if we want to get a piece of the postseason this year and keep the bullpen from being run into the ground. As pleased as I was with Pallante’s last outing, the new thinking is that you have to limit his innings the rest of the way instead of building his workload for years to come so welcome back to the pen.
Libertore did have a much better second half than first half last year. Maybe he will pick up again soon (we can hope)
I just hope that Montgomery doesn’t have a rough first month and have everyone turn on him like Matz. We are basically trading for Matz as their stats are very close the last few years.
I was guessing Nunez and Zach Mills so I can get behind this. You don’t want a 1st baseman that is only 5’10”. Smaller target th throw to.
Pugs, just watched Henry Hill immortalized in Goodfellas for the first time. Fantastic movie. But if you are interested in gangster movies you need to see the Coen Brothers flick “Miller’s Crossing” from about that same time frame. Remember–you still owe me watching Blood Simple
Good. I was hoping we didn’t have Anthony Young on our hands, owner of the most consecutive loss decisions in MLB history at 27 despite having decent stats. After taking a trip down memory lane I see his bad luck didn’t end after baseball, either. Died of brain tumor at 51.

Was killing time trying to see if John Gant was doing anything in American baseball this year and was looking at the throw-in in the Gant/Happ trade, Evan Sisk. He has some nice stats this year–Just over 1.00 ERA in 29 appearances and 39 innings between AA and AAA. Wish we could try him in McFarland’s spot.

Just came to see the griping about Matz. If he pitches like he did tonight he will keep us in a lot of games. Give the guy more than a month of starts before you write him off! Then again, I also watched Corbin of the Nats pitch last night since he was going against Gallen and I thought Corbin looked pretty decent too.
I remember looking at Tyler Lyons stats at Ok St and wondering why on earth he got drafted and I remember someone make a long post saying he would do better against wood bats and I thought they were nuts. Well, he didn’t turn into Cy Young but he did a lot better than I ever expected. For all I know Flores decided to focus on guys who hauled hay during their high school summers instead of playing video games. But they seem to have a strategy. Lets see how it looks in 3 years before writing it off.
I disagree. It seems the Cardinals have been really good at navigating this system since it was implemented. I see it as a way they can “catch up” a little despite perennially picking lower. I want to say they missed out on a big slugger from Texas named Russell or something like that and I know some of us were wringing our hands, but he never hit with whomever he ended up with. The Carlson pick was a great job of hitting on saving money by picking a guy a little early and saving money for other bonuses
Carioca, I think I read that they changed back to the rule that bonus over 10k past Rd 10 count against the pool again. So maybe they draft 3-4 high school guys in early teens and sign 1-2 with the offer of quickest sign gets money? I can’t say I am too excited with this draft but I usually am wrong so maybe that bodes well
Just got to watch the highlights of this one. Really glad to see Marmol immediately react to Cabrera’s fit. That stuff needs to be nipped in the bud. All Cincy’s runs scored on 2 ground ball hits just past the infield–of course I didn’t see the plays where the runners reached. Carlson’s swing on his double was a beaut. Love to see more of that stroke from the left side. Surprised Marmol didn’t switch Hicks and Giovanni order in pitching order/situation but I’m glad he sent a message to Giovanni and I’m glad Hicks is moving closer to the end of the game. Dickerson with the RBI on the ankle high pitch. Being such a bad ball hitter makes him a real wild card.
I think Helsey would have gone if he felt good. I’d rather have a pitcher be honest and nurse it a couple days rather than blow it out. For all we know that is what Reyes did last year. But where we killed ourself was the momentum from VerHagen. Now I haven’t said this all season but I’m going to go there: I’d have trusted Woodford to eat those 3 innings and been confident that we’d have gone home with the win. And Marmol knew a McFarlin implosion would have been imminent. They are really hurting the pen. Please, please DFA them and bring up Woodford and Naile. I have seen some lousy hit machines in my day. I remember Juan Agusto having a year where he got lit up. I remember the time Pedro Borbon got shellacked until he was granted release. I knew Gary Buckels had to be lousy with a name like that (even if he wasn’t really that bad). Then there was that lefty we included in the Rasmus deal that wore out his welcome. But short of Holland, noone gives me that doom feeling like VerHagen.
Nathan has returned to his old handle? Perhap this will return us to those champ years like 06 and 11. Where is Charlie Johnson?
I feel you guys are crazy the way you are willing to include Bader in deals. He is the exact guy we would be targetting if he was gone.
I’m guessing a lot of folks on this board didn’t care for Joe Namath and his unruly mop of hair. I have no problem with Jack giving his opinions on politics as long as it doesn’t interfere with his physical performance. I may not agree with everything he says but he may never have more people listening to him than he does right now so I understand why he wants to make his opinion known. Now if he starts boycotting games or missing practices to be at rallies or something I may change my mind. Hey, at least he didn’t storm the capitol building!
Then again I was hoping the cards would throw decent money (5-7m) at Tepera, McHugh, or Melancon rather than scattering it to the wind on the reclamation projects. The first 2 are having ok seasons (3.5-4 ERA) but Melancon looks like toast in the desert.
I’ve seen a few posts offering up decent prospects for Lopez of Baltimore. He is having a great year but his career stats are awful and he is 29. Anyone buying right now is going to overpay. When his streak of not giving up a home run ends or his 4bb/9 rate he has this year finally bites him it isn’t going to be pretty. Sure, I might float Nootbaar or Rondon over there but I hope we don’t offer anyone like McGreevy, Hence, or Paniagua. Yes, I know Baltimore will probably get a better offer and I hope they take it. I’d wager Lopez comes back to Earth after a bad game or 2 and we end up being glad for the pitching we Didn’t give up.
Haven’t had a chance to see any games since Harrera has been up. How is his game-calling/framing going? Many shakeoffs? And pitches in the dirt–how is looking?
I don’t think we will ever sign a healthy free agent ace. Had my hopes dashed too many times. I gave up after lots of prognosticators had us for Kevin Brown and I bought it hook, line, and sinker. Nope, more like Chris Carpenter injury comebacks and getting lucky on Colorado giving up on Kile.
The Jaime Garcia comp is a good one. Garcia’s last 2 years with Cardinals when he was healthy-ish is almost exactly what I expect from Matz. And Garcia was paid almost exactly the same. Matz had been durable the last 5 years, something Garcia could never claim. Matz #’s this year are inflated by HR rate. His k/bb rate is better than last year and his FIP is in low 4 range. Let him get a few more starts under his belt before dismissing him as Cecil 2.0.
The cost is precisely why I favored the Matz deal. If Matz can put up 2021 numbers for 4 years then he would prob be worth 15-20m per year. He is paid 11m per year. I was betting on 2 years like 2021, 1 middling year (.500 record and 4.5 era) and 1 year totally lost to injury as anymore that is pretty certain for the Cardinals. Looks like we are getting either option 3 or 4 this year. I guess we will see.
