I use to be a Rosenthal fan, but no more. When he was here, he cried and cried about wanting to be a starter. Then, he got injured and the Cardinals organization nursed him along for over a year, until he got better. Then, he and Boras told the Cardinals to get lost.
Personally, I’d rather not see Trevor Rosenthal again in a Cardinals uniform.
I do think they gave up on John Brebbia too soon.
I liked Dominic Leone when they first got him. But he wasn’t very effective when the Cardinals had him.
Leone couldn’t stay healthy. When he was he was serviceable. I know Grichuk isn’t great, but that trade was bad.
I don’t mind Rosenthal and I wasn’t suggesting the Cardinals should have signed him, just making a joke about the former Cardinals in the SF pen.
Saw that former Cardinal, and several other clubs, Dick Schofield passed away recently, age 87.
Solid utility player who was highly touted coming out of high school in Illinois. He had the unique trait of being a Cardinal three different times. He came up with our club at the tender age of 18 due to the antiquated baby bonus rule. We traded him to Pittsburgh, then reacquired him in 1968, let him go again, and got him back in ‘71.
Schofield played on three pennant winners. In addition to our 1968 team, he was on the 1960 Pirates Championship club, and with the Dodgers on their 1966 pennant winners.
I think of Schofield as a bit of an earlier day Tommy Edman, although Edman has more power. Schofield’s son had a nice career as well, mostly with the Angels. And his grandson, Jason Werth, was a very good player as well.
Was killing time trying to see if John Gant was doing anything in American baseball this year and was looking at the throw-in in the Gant/Happ trade, Evan Sisk. He has some nice stats this year–Just over 1.00 ERA in 29 appearances and 39 innings between AA and AAA. Wish we could try him in McFarland’s spot.
Edit–maybe not. Went for a second look and that bb/rate needs workSince he landed with the Giants the first time through waivers, I suspect he may clear this time. (Because of their strong 2021, the Giants are low on the waiver priority list.)
I hope they can bring Rondon back, he’s not the top starter they need, but better than a few on the 40 man.
It is not unheard of, but very unusual for a team to reclaim its former player off waivers. Cleveland did it with Oscar Mercado this season. The only time I can remember the Cards doing it was with outfielder Cody Haerther way back in 2007. I wrote about it here.
I’m glad the “last post” and “next post” are purely chronogical here, as seeing the post “Will Friday Be Flores’ Last Day With St Louis?” caused a moment of panic.
Any idea what became of John Gant? The last news was he signed to play in Japan this year for the Hokkaido Hams, but he is not on their roster and does not show up in their player stats for this season.

Nice write up on dick schofield bicyclemike. I read up on him after you mentioned him. One of the most interesting things to me was that he went back to his hometown of Springfield Illinois after his playing days and stayed there til he died. Not something most players who have had some success do. Seemed like a good guy.

Sosa gets a start at 3B subbing for Alex Bohm. Sosa had a double and you guessed it, a HBP.
Gregorious was recently DFA’d with second baseman Seguera returning from the 60day IL.
The rookie Stott has made all 3 starts at SS since Gregorious exited, and is currently hitting well.
Sosa looks to be the utility infielder at this time.Hayward going to be released after the sesson by the Cubs, still has a year and $22 million remaining.
T.J. Zeuch going to get called up by the Reds.
And the big one, Matt Carpenter fouled a ball off his foot last night and broke it.
I just saw that about Carp, too. I was very happy to see he had turned it around. I was hoping to see him again in late October.
That is tough for Carp. He was having such a resurgence. I hope he isn’t lost for the rest of the year.
