Wetherholt gets his first dong. Fly ball to LF. (Opposite field) Can’t tell from video if it was wind aided or not but it was well gone. Hopefully Robersse was just “working on some stuff” as 9R in 2/3 of an inning is not mid season form. According to the box Roby threw 2 clean innings. Mikolos threw 2 scoreless as well so I’ll take the positive news and ignore the “L” since those things don’t matter as much right now.
Welp, checked the box score to see if I got lucky on the Herrera prediction (no) and I see the pitchers did great until Horn gave up 4 in 2/3 of an inning. I’m always nervous until I see each of our projected starters actually start a spring game. Fedde got it over with today. I don’t know HOW many times we’ve heard, “oh, he’s about a week out” over the years just to have the guy out for 3 months or the whole year.
How about Jesse Chavez for the pen. Has put up 3 consecutive solid years while collecting only about 3 million total in salary. And you know the Braves would be calling at the deadline. Yeah, he’s old. But that means he’s cheap. Could probably be signed now for a couple million.
I thought only the top 6 picks were protected against back to back, not top 10. That’s why we could pick #7 and #5. We initially were bummed about our bad luck in “dropping” to 7 but it seems to have turned out perfectly. Getting a top 3 guy at #7 and then lucking into a lottery pick could really help the new regime off to a good start
I just love having the financial flexibility that comes with pick #5. In theory they could pick a guy they were looking at 15# and have the extra signing cash ability to go over slot on the other guys. Just opens up a lot of avenues.
It may have been lucky to have slipped to #7 last year. Teams aren’t allowed to pick top 6 in 3 straight years but Cards could easily end up top 6 next year if the ping pong balls bless us. Actually I think there is a stipulation about revenue sharing but I can’t remember if it would disqualify us from another top 6 pick or not.
The thing I liked reading about him was that he was a pitcher at Yale and was actually drafted by the dodgers but chose not to sign and completed his schooling there. A playing career + degree from Yale makes a nice combo. Now get that tall Eli Chris Young to be surprise GM and I’ll believe in Santa Claus
If I’m mcgreevey looking at that D behind me, I’d be trying to get K’s rather than pitching to contact.

Lynn with a nice line. Does he plan to keep pitching next year? I feel like the Cards got exactly what they wanted out of him, particularly his fiery attitude and grit. But I can’t help feeling like going back to that well would be a big mistake.
Sean Armstrong DFA despite pretty decent numbers here. Is Mo going out of his way to show how little he thought of Carlson? Is he hoping someone takes the remainder of his very modest contract? Personally I think that looks really tacky. Maybe he said something wrong in the clubhouse? If it was just to get O’Brien up why not just wait a couple days for roster expansion. Or switch him with Leahy? Weird.
Siani’s hit had him up to .240. I checked baseball reference for his WAR and it is just .8 still. He just isn’t drawing the walks like in the minors. Still, in last 30 days he is at .300 batting average and just recently turned 25 and did not play in the Covid year in minors. I think he can still be very valuable for us if he can work counts a little better and draw a walk every once in a while. Ride his defense another couple years until he loses a step from injuries and trade him before he become useless and expensive. The Bader treatment. Burlison’s catch could not have been made by Contreras. Burleson appears to at least be energetic and had made a few plays that pleasantly surprises you.
ZTR, you aren’t the poster Skinnypimp with a new handle are you? I didn’t post much for a couple years but I missed that guy and he was out of Memphis.
Ah, I see you don’t go against the cap unless the rounds 10-20 sign for over 150k. Has that number been risen lately? I thought it was considerably lower.
Don’t these signing suggest we have an agreement with Wetherholt pending a physical? I wouldn’t think you would spend extra on these guys who aren’t getting the minimum unless they were sure with Wetherholt.
I think it would be great if one of those catchers could develop as a position player and still catch a couple times a week so that he could serve as a third catcher. I just say this because the scouting report on each is not positive on their defense. Sort of a poor man’s Dalton Varsho. Could be useful to be called up for 27th man for a doubleheader.
I do understand the idea with the injured guys. Get them cheap and hope 1 pans out. Also, I don’t mind a few more college organizational fillers. Even if they don’t pan out, they may help the teams win more than some of these kids who are athletic but just can’t hit. I really feel like prospects develop better when they are enjoying the ride.
Yep. Looks like we are putting all the proverbial eggs from this draft in Wetherholt’s basket. A potential stud and some 5th-15th rd lottery tickets. Sounds great if you trust our medical staff to assess Wetherholt’s injury issues. I’m kind of closing my eyes and hoping for the best. I’m still happy with the pick but this draft could look really bad if he fizzles
Rainier is pretty much the one guy I hope they DON’T pick. Concerns about not being able to catch up with the fastball in high school before you even get to use a wooden bat is too much for me. I’d take Kurtz over Rainer.
You guys see that Matthews made it to the futures game? I expected Hence but this is a nice surprise for the young lefty
According to MLB trade rumors, Keyon Middleton had setback and the are now considering UCL surgery. I was never on board with this signing as I’d have rather they had offered extra cash to better starters than Lynn and Gibson. I sure have been wrong about them so far.
I have a nice collection of about 400 hats, most of them from hat club or lids. It helped being single through my 30’s as now that I am 45 and married for 7 years my collection is growing a lot slower. I’ll probably grab one of the Cardinals but am not greatly enamored with it. I got a city connect for the White Sox, Royals, Red Sox, and Rockies so far.
