Bader may have worn out his welcome with his antics and the fact that he was a rarity in going all the way to the arbiter in arbitration.

I’d like to know why the Cardinals signed him to a 2 year contract prior to this season if that was the case.

I think it’s just we had a chance to get a reliable rotation arm without cost in prospects or the active roster.

Personally, I have never seen what I would call “antics” from Bader. He has his mannerisms, like flipping the bat, but all players have their routines. Nothing about him has ever bothered me or gave the appearance of hot-dogging-it as the term was used at one time. He was aggressive, and seemed to genuinely get upset when he failed.

Should enjoy New York if he lays off those sliders on the outer edge.

I think next years rotation is going to be really interesting, especially if Wainwright returns. I’m not so sure I want to see Hudson as a starter next year, from what I have seen Pallante appears to have more upside as a starter. Also how Libratore factors in this as well, I would say his next appearances either at Memphis or St. Louis and Spring are going to be real important for his future as a starter in St. Louis. Then you have Flaherty can he recover from his injuries and regain some form/ ditto with Matz. Then on top of that you have the biggest mystery in Reyes and what they decide to do with him if he is healthy. Hopefully they don’t get caught short on starters again going into 2023.

That seems to be an annual event here. Mo’s two biggest jobs this winter will be shoring up the rotation and deciding what to do at catcher.

Depending on how he does these next two months it might be a good idea to bring Quintana back on a cheap one year deal as insurance and I would hope with the money coming off the books for Yadi, Albert, Dickerson, McFarland, and maybe Waino, we would step up and get an ace.

Gscottar – Won’t our rotation in 2023 will be? –

    Flaherty
    Mikolas
    Hudson
    Matz
    Montgomery

With the possibilities of Waino, Quintana, Liberatore, Thompson, and Woodford for depth.

Wouldn’t surprise me a bit to have a VERY quiet off season. Wainwright, Molina, Pujols all retire, Quintana, McFarland, Dickerson all FA.

    1. Carlson CF
    2. O’Neill LF
    3. Goldschmidt 1B
    4. Arenado 3B
    5. Gorman DH
    6. DeJong SS
    7. RF by committe
    8. Herrera C
    9. Edman 2B

Donovan, Burleson, Yepez, Nootbaar, Knizner…with any, other than Knizner, playing RF.

    Flaherty, Mikolas, Montgomery (L), Hudson/Pallante, Matz (L)

Reyes, Thompson (L), Pallante/Fernandez, Stratton, Hicks, Cabrera (L), Gallegos, Helsley

Obviously Flaherty and Reyes health is a BIG question. Woodfoord or probably VerHagen could fill Reyes spot in the pen because you know they won’t cut bait there. Fernandez is out of options. Hudson could be traded and Pallante start, if not Pallante is a better pen option than Hudson, or possibly its Liberatore in the rotation and Pallante in the pen. Naughton (L), Romero (L), Pacheco, Whitley, Walsh all have options and could be depth in AAA, depending on Whitley and Walsh health too. If Flaherty requires surgery and is going to be out. I would definitely like to see another SP and trade Hudson and use Pallante in the rotation. But they have a few months before the off season to sort things out, but I don’t expect them to do hardly anything at all.

The person I see them most likely to trade, as much as I like him too, is Edman. It would allow Gorman to play 2B, then they could bring in a RH RF platoon with Nootbaar, and let Burleson and Yepez be the primary DH with Burleson getting some time in LF/RF, and Yepez backing up Goldschmidt and seeing more limited time in the OF. It would limit some of the versatility and bank totally on DeJong at SS for 2023. Who also would be in the last year of his contract and open up 2024 SS for Winn…hopefully.

Yes, that looks accurate but we know you can’t really count on Matz and Flaherty to stay healthy. Plus, we really need a big time ace. Someone you can feel can dominate in a playoff series. I don’t think we have that right now.

One other thing about Bader. Right now there are several 20 something young ladies in St. Louis who are heart broken at this very moment.

I wish Herrera/Knizner were the answer but I am not so sure about that. We might need to sign a veteran stopgap or go big for someone like Contreras. I know that Contreras isn’t that highly regarded defensively but his bat would look good in our lineup.

Knizner is known to not be the answer. He was never really thought to be the answer anyway. Herrera has a much better shot than Knizner and should get his chance next year. A one year deal with Conforto would be my choice for filling RF…let him build value and bide time for Walker to get ready. Burleson and Yepez can share DH and spot OF duties.

Herrera has 18 ABs in his career. It is far too early to say he isn’t our future catcher. Knizner is a backup in my mind. I had hopes he would be a hit first catcher , but his play this year has not been very good.

I hear some others disappointed by Liberatore. Thompson has improved greatly from last year, and there is no reason Liberatore cannot duplicate that.

I am not saying Herrera isn’t our future catcher. My question is he ready to be the everyday catcher in 2023?

I like Carlson just fine in CF.

He’s no Bader, who plays like his hair is on fire, but look at the IL time that type of play can lead to. Its’ not just Harrison either. Buxton could be a top 5 mlb player if he could stay on the field.

Carlson is a bit more tempered in CF, a little more measured, and I like that.

Baders injuries have nothing to do with how he plays, he’s not crashing into walls and such like Griffy jr was. Just a little unlucky from what I see.

Bwhahaha! You’re being very generous on the age. Also on gender as well. There’s a bunch of young boys who were likely all on his jock as well with that long hair and styling his way to those highlight reel plays. Lol

Oh and I don’t think he was a bad guy off the field. So I don’t think that will be an issue for him.

He broke/cracked ribs diving for fly balls. Not always about the wall.

Yadi will love catching this young pitcher. I look forward to the game he calls and framing his pitches. It will be fun.

On my mind as I am at work early today…Bader and Sosa are the 2 guys I think of that really get more fired up than anyone when they got a big hit. I agree with Sosa leaving as I never saw him as a full timer and I get the sense he might grumble about playing time. I hate to see Bader leave but his style of play leads to likely eventual breakdown and diminishment of skill. We got him during his cheap years and likely best defence and we really need Montgomery if we want to get a piece of the postseason this year and keep the bullpen from being run into the ground. As pleased as I was with Pallante’s last outing, the new thinking is that you have to limit his innings the rest of the way instead of building his workload for years to come so welcome back to the pen.

Carlson can make those diving catches too. But only when he has to. Steady and measured are good words to describe him. Plus he doesn’t act like every hit he gets is huge.

As long as a batter is not showing up a pitcher or being vulgar, I don’t care what he does when he gets a hit. As far as fielding, Bader gets to balls that Carlson doesn’t. Carlson has looked pretty good in CF recently, though.

If I like a guy, he is fiery and plays at 110%. If I don’t like him, he is cocky and arrogant. Those stances were taken and shared long ago and many times since. Nothing new to see here.

IMO, Bader was a good Cardinal and this trade may work out well for both teams. I wish him well in NY.
