We need to look into Lucas Luetge that the Yankees DFA a couple days ago. Has put up solid numbers the last couple years but he doesn’t throw hard. That could work in our favor as it would be a change of pace from our flamethrowers. Only a few more days before he has to be traded. Yanks DFA’d him to clear a roster spot so we would have to offer someone down on the farm. I’d part with someone like Baker or a toolsy lottery ticket that isn’t hitting

I imagine they gave him a mlb deal to keep him from being taken in R5 draft rather than the idea that he will stick with the team. He still has options.
Salvy Perez can’t take a BB if his life depended. If we want to pay 20mil for a good leader who seems to get timely hits despite about a .250 obp% then try to talk Molina into returning one more year. Don’t invest that money in Perez’s overworked knees.
I really, really like that trade idea, Grandal. Essentially it is dumping DeJong and adding Grandal for 6mil. I don’t mind adding a couple pieces like Trent Baker or Luken Baker or even Pacheco to make that work. Otherwise Barnhart seems like he has just been waiting to become a Cardinal
I could easily see the Cards try to buy an extra year of seasoning for Hererra with a one year deal for someone like Barnhart or Roberto Perez or collect Alfaro from the Padres or wherever he is exiled. Not earth shattering, but more of a name that the pitchers are familiar with. Yan Gomez maybe if he is available. Let them go the route of Gerald Laird, Matt Wieters, and that punk from the Reds as they have done before. Not that I agree with it, but I expect it.
Despite walking 2 and hitting a batter, Morton is getting almost all his borderline off the corner strikes called. Monty hasn’t gotten the same benefit on his through 3 innings.
BikeMike, I used to follow college football religiously. Originally from Nebraska so I thought there was nothing finer than watching Tommy Frazier run the option. Take a fast qb, a good running back, 2 receivers who know their job is to block, a tough fullback, and a group of cornfed bullies that want to pound you for 60 minutes, and a coach who knew how to execute it, and it made for a wholly satisfying experience. Sadly, it has been decided that you can’t play option football anymore. I think it is more that you can no longer get a whole team to commit to that style of play where the receivers get no fanfare and that it is not a stepping stone to the NFL. I’ll still enjoy watching the military teams run it well and pray that Frost can bring this Nebraska team back from the mediocrity it has basked in since the turn of the century. The other big strike against option football now, how they run the clock constantly. Used to be able to keep it close for 2 1/2 quarters while pounding them on the ground to wear them out. Try that now and the game is over when the defence begins to slow down.
I should add one final chicken liver note. If buying raw, they are excellent catfish bait. Often times at more rural stores, you will see the lids of the product be dirty, often from chicken blood. That’s because the meat shop guys just shove ’em in tubs without the usual sanitary concerns. Another thing, fried chicken livers (and gizzards) is more an old lady treat than old men. I guarantee that if you walk into the common area of a rural nursing home in southern Missouri and announce you have Livers and Gizzards you are going to make some lady friends.
Reading this recap late and have a couple comments. To TD: the reason Merril Kelly didn’t get his MLB start until age 30 is he spent some years perfecting his art in the far east before getting a deal to return stateside. To those who speak ill of fried chicken livers: you would be surprised at the number of folk who partake in this treat. Having worked in a grocery store for a decade I can tell you that the older generations of rural folk love this delicacy. I would wager it started in making use of every piece of meat when times were tough during war and the depression. To those brave enough to partake in their elders’ traditions, the following is just as strident. My own wife orders them in restaurants. I’d try them, but if I like them it is just another greasy, salty food I don’t need. Next, to Puggs: You are killing me on the usage of the word Mosey. There is no Z in there, especially not double Z’s!!! I love talking about people moseying along with the best of them but we have to use the proper spelling! Finally, great to see Straton be somewhat uneventful for a bit, even if it got sketchy at the end
Molina looking fit as a fiddle (not fiddler) in that footage. I’m guessing it is difficult to find a treadmill repairman in the Dominican Republic during the offseason.
I have to say that Molina’s personal business is not impressing me much this year. Of course in 20 years noone will be thinking much about it and at least he isn’t complaining about too many days off. Guessing he wants that record to share with Wainwright or he would have sailed after last year. I wonder if his behavior will have any impact on future coaching gigs if he maintains his interests in things other than baseball
We definitely whiffed on that deal but at the time I think we were all clamoring for Mo to make a trade for someone. I think we had just missed out on Stanton. The trade certainly turned out regretable. I think many of us considered Alcantara and Junior Fernandez to be pretty close at the time and if those two were switched it would have been more palatable. One thing to consider is that deal cleared space from our system. Had we not made it we may have lost some guys via R5 or waivers. One thing for Ozuna, that guy has the ability to take Anyone deep at any time–something you can’t say about many players. If I was down 1-0 against Randy Johnson throwing darts I’d take my chances with Ozuna rather than someone good but not likely to turn it around like Arenado or Holiday.
Let me be the first (and likely ONLY) person to say I have no issues with this lineup, particularly if Nooty lays down a bunt first at bat.
Any idea of any of the names on the list if Bader can’t play this year? Surely not Walker or Wynn. Hoping no Hence, Graceffo.
Is Griffin Roberts elgible for R5 this year? I could see someone taking a chance on him with his draft pedigree. His numbers look pretty decent this year.
Brian, DeLuzio looks to fill depth pretty similarly. I know Hurst is supposed to be well regarded defensively and I seem to remember some vids of DeLuzio making some nice catches. But overall I prefer Hurst due to being a Cardinal draftee, being 2 years younger, and hitting from the left side. Just my personal preference.
Agree on Capel. Let Hurst have that job. Naile has been useful this year but guys like him can be found easily. I am a little hesitant in giving up on Whitley but I’d rather lose him than someone like Paniagua that could be an impact guy.
Paniagua has to be added. We can’t let the Padres try to restock their system by taking our guys and ruining them again.
I’ve heard a lot of people predict good things for LJ Jones. The stats aren’t that great. What am I missing? To me, the best indicator that a guy is going to “take off” is a good bb/k ratio and that isn’t great. Nor is he “big” as he is listed at just 6’0″. I know he missed time in college due to injury. Hoping you guys are seeing something firsthand.
Just got to watch video of Gio. He had his movement from 2020-2021 on his slider tonight. I don’t know if he just decided to chance it with some goo or something because it would not be called in a big TV game or what but he really had that amazing break on his slider from when he was first traded. I hope he can keep it up in the future. These wins we are getting right now may be bigger than any disciplanary action. Anyway, still a huge fan of the deadline deals for Quintana, Montgomery, and not trading Carlson, Walker, Wynn, and more for Soto.
