ParticipantThe thought that the playoffs are just a crapshoot doesn’t really hardly ever go that way though. The Cardinals team that won in 06 was largely the same team we had in 05. We also were on our way to a pretty good record til the last few weeks of the season so the final record wasn’t a real indicator who we were. The 11 team you could definitely say falls into the get in and you never know thing but I find relying on that not to be a great strategy. Look at it this way, the cubs have won a world series since we won one and that alone should light a little fire under ownership in my opinion. The funny thing is that this strategy would have better effect on teams like the pirates or the reds than the Cardinals. Their fans will tend to show up if they are competitive where as they won’t show up as much if they are losing. Cardinal fans will still show up during lean years as long as they can see that progress is being made. Would they tolerate perennially losing, no they wouldn’t but that’s a different story.

cardsfan64ParticipantKMOX sounds like the game is about ready to resume at 11:27pm ET
July 4, 2022 at 10:29 pm #190119A few years ago, Junior said he would raise the payroll significantly. Now, he didn’t say when and significant for him might be entirely different for someone else. The fact is with the self-imposed salary cap all the Cardinals can do is pick up waiver wire rejects, guys who haven’t pitched in a few years, Japanese players who’ve come home again, etc. The Cardinals will always be a second tier team unless they change their business model.
July 4, 2022 at 10:48 pm #190121Game is back on. Shux. I was hoping for a rainout after the 4th inning. Going to lose a game to the Brewers tonight.

ParticipantI don’t know about this. In the eighth inning we pinch hit for two guys that previously had base hits in the game and neither time did the pinch hitter get a hit. I understand the lefty righty thing and I definitely understand if you had goldy or similiar not starting but I don’t know. I understand it’s different pitchers but I still say you have to look at how the guy was swinging before just going for the auto switch out. Maybe he’s just swinging well that night no matter what arm the pitcher is using.

July 4, 2022 at 11:55 pm #190124So, the guy who hit the 2 run homer was lifted for a .200 hitter?
July 5, 2022 at 12:02 am #190125Pujols swung on balls 2,3, and 6. Hard to draw a walk that way.

MrperkinsParticipantNathan has returned to his old handle? Perhap this will return us to those champ years like 06 and 11. Where is Charlie Johnson?
July 5, 2022 at 6:39 am #190133The new post season format alters the scope of “competitive”, and potentially sets up some end of season shenanigans. We presently have the 3rd best record among non-division leaders, 3 games behind the Pads and 3.5 behind the Braves. So, last year we would be 3 games out of a WC berth, this year we currently are in the 3rd WC slot, 1 game ahead of the Phillies.
If post began now, we would play a 3 game series at the Division leader with the 3rd best record, the Brewers. The #2 WC team, the Padres would play 3 at the #1 WC, The Braves. The two division leaders with the best records, Dodgers and Mets, get a bye for the first post season round.
So 6 NL teams make post and 9 do not. As of today we are one of the 6. So far, so good.
It is possible that the #1 WC team could be a significantly better team than the 3rd best division leader, so the #3 WC team might have a better chance to advance than the #2 WC team, and advancing would then guarantee at least one post-season home game. That constitutes an incentive to gain an advantage by throwing one or more games at the end and dropping back from 2nd WC to 3rd WC, depending on how things stand then.
July 5, 2022 at 6:41 am #190134This just isn’t a very good team lately…and if they don’t make any changes they won’t be making the post season either!
July 5, 2022 at 7:54 am #190136Seems like around .500 or a little under for most of a month now…

ParticipantThe lineup right now is missing 1/2 of the regulars. The rotation is missing 40% of it’s pieces.

Similarly, the Nationals repped the NL in 2019 with 93 wins. The odds are certainly tilted to the teams with more wins, but it’s still a crapshoot once you’re in the Divisional Series.

The playoffs are far from a crapshoot. Ironically, your two examples are very good counters to that idea. It’s necessary to have a complete team without glaring weaknesses to win in October. The Braves for example, transformed at the trade deadline. Anthopoulas’ work in doing that is now legendary in ATL. After the trade deadline, the Braves won at a .655 clip, making them the quality of a 106-win team entering the playoffs. The Nats in 2019 won at a .667 clip after the trade deadline, making them the quality of a 108-win team entering the playoffs.
Unfortunately, Mo transacts like he thinks it’s a crapshoot.
