I got a giveaway from this board about 10 years ago. The 2011 World Series on DVD. I still play the whole series about once a year.
That 1994 season was exciting, but not for the Cardinals. They were sub .500 when the plug was pulled on the season. Tony Gwynn missed his chance at .400, Matt Williams his chance at home run record. But to me the biggest casualty from that strike year were the Expos. They were dominating the NL with a great young team. They never got the revenue and fan interest from the playoffs and then the lower attendance after the strike was the nail in the coffin. They were always my favorite team growing up besides the Cardinals.
So back to 1994 Cardinals. Their rotation was an ineffective +5 ERA Tewksbury, Vicente Palacios for some reason, Rene Arocha, Omar Oliveres and then the revolving door of young lefties that didn’t pan out—Tom Urbani, Rheal Cormier (who ended up pretty decent in bullpen), and Allen Watson. I think he won his first 5 decisions before losing the rest. Well Sutcliffe made a few starts over the summer but was clearly done by that point. Still there is always an excitement when you get a pitcher that was great. I remember fantasizing about a 2nd Fernandomania when the Cards traded Danny Jackson for Valenzuela. And I was excited about Phil Plantier since I had a bunch of his stadium club rookie cardsI only got to see highlights of the game but I was pleased to see a lot of emotion from the team after the Nootbaar RBI hit and Goldschmidt home run. I think it spilled over from Lynn gutting through 5 innings with a lot of emotion. I was not a fan of the Lynn signing at the time but I really don’t think we win this game without his theatrics firing up the squad. I feel like if he can keep his ERA 4.5 or less, he can really help this crew grow up into a winning club
Wowza! I hadn’t read this thread in a while and I missed a lot. But in carefully reading I think I reached a conclusion: Shady is the one and only DesiFan from years ago with a new fave! That guy was bonkers
I gotta say, the Springfield Cardinals have a really good ticket program this year. Their ticket sales have been slowly declining each year but it is still a good field and great atmosphere. Got to listen to the GM make his pitch to a group of us and I gotta say, I was impressed
Mikolas made a lot of people look bad with the off speed pitch that he would bury at the feet of lefty hitters that first year. I don’t know if he just doesn’t have the same break or if the league has him fully scouted now but he is not getting that kind of success now and it has brought down his whole profile some.
Well I was probably the biggest proponent of the Matz signing that has so far been a dud. Hopefully this is the year he totally redeems himself
Really important to get that first win. It could have gotten ugly if the Dodgers swept the series and the L’s kept mounting.
Next move: Dallas Keuchel 1yr-8 mil and a 8mil club option or 4 mil buy out so he has 12mil guaranteed
According to just posted blurb on MLBtraderumors, Molina says 90% chance of getting a deal done with Cardinals. Says he had offers from Cardinals and Marlins in some capacity last year. Also mention Cardinals have local ties to Astro reliever Maton and speculate interest in re-signing Hicks. Unsurprisingly no mention of interest in reacquiring Genesis
According to mlb trade rumors Ivan Herrera has one more option year after all. Some have mentioned dangling him in hopes of upgrading rotation. I hope the Cards hold onto him and Knizner. If they are going to dangle a player, I’d prefer they do so with Helsey who I keep expecting to need Tommy John surgery every year.
At least Mercker was dealt for Mike Matthews who gave us a couple decent seasons before being traded to Milwaukee. I love reading these guys transaction lines. It was Matthews and a guy named Chris Morris for former first rounder Jamey Wright, who was still only 27 despite stinking it up for the Rockies and Brew Crew since he was barely old enough to drink a brew. The minors stats for Morris were so intriguing! Age 21 at A level. Good batting average, almost a hundred walks, almost 120 stolen bases!! He never really did that poorly in minors until he was done at 25. Prob would have been a starter on our 80’s clubs but the 90’s was a much different era and 15th rd picks have to do way more. Anyway, back to Matthews…I seem to remember he got into LaRussa’s doghouse but I don’t remember why and that’s why he got traded. Anybody remember?
Seemed like the Cards were always trying a project to turn a reliever into a starter around then. They did well with Bottenfield and managed to pass him off with Adam Kennedy to get Edmonds. No way that deal gets made these days with focus on strikeouts, Whip, FIP, and the alphabet stew. Anyone with a pulse could see Kent was doing it with smoke and mirrors. Todd Wellemeyer was another one that I just couldn’t understand why they were trying to turn into a starter. He always looked like he had run a marathon by the end of the 3rd
Palacios did take a memorable turn in the rotation July 19th, (his 31st birthday) 1994 for our club. He 1 hit an Astros club featuring Biggio/Bagwell and friends to the tune of a shutout, besting Daryl Kile a night after Houston overcame an 11 run deficit to beat the Cards. I suspect they may have celebrated a bit too much.
Guys, this ain’t our first Palacios. We took a chance on ex-Buc Vicente Palacios in the struggling period of mid 90’s before we went all in on Big Mac. He gave us 2 years and almost 200 innings of subpar results after reappearing from the Mexican league. Then disappeared for almost another 5 years before resurfacing in organized baseball. Looking at his baseball reference pic makes me wonder if he fibbed a bit about his age as a lot of folks did in the 80’s when he was getting started.
We need to tone down our play. We are about to catch the Pirates and Detroit, and I suspect the Mets are close too. Call Motter’s agent and get him back here.
Fully expecting Helsey to be inconsistent, but just good enough results that they don’t shut him down. Then come to camp in spring and “discover” arm problem. TJ surgery and out until Aug 2025. I’ve had a bad vibe about his arm since this season began. Hope I’m wrong.
Was just checking the standings and while we are in line for the 5th spot now, we are dangerously close to Pitt, Washington, and the Mets. We would do well to tank this final game of the series vs the Pirates to help cement our “lead”. Playing Palacios has backfired a tad but thankfully not enough to disrupt our losing. We may have to send him down and try Fermin in the outfield.
