Verhagen gave up three runs to the bottom of the order. Not really impressed with him. His ERA is now 4.96.
We just don’t have much of a bullpen.UConn-When you are getting blown out, and have gone through many relievers, and you finally throw in the towel and put a position player on the mound, you are saving your staff for the next fight.
When you are blowing someone else out, and your relief corps is not stressed at all, you are SHOWBOATING in putting a position player on the mound. In the case of Albert and Yadi it is particularly egregious, since neither can pitch. Many position players allow zero or one run in an inning pitched.
This showboating by Marmol, Puljos, and Yadi is getting mighty old, real fast. You’d think we had a 20 game lead in the standings and clinched homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.
It is obvious that Marmol is in way over his head. Time to send him down to AAA to get some managerial experience.
Given that Matz has an ERA over 6.00, maybe it would be better that his return to the rotation not be rushed
The club had pretty good results with Matheny and Schildt (the latter’s last cardinal game notwithstanding), so I can see why they went with Marmol, staying with the managerial ‘in house’ formula.
Although ERA can be deceptive, especially for relievers with low total innings pitched, this is less so for closers. The reason is that they don’t have to worry about the dreaded ‘inherited runners’ being allowed to score by another reliever. Therefore, when you see a closer with an era significantly over 3.00 this far into the season, you know he isn’t going to work out.
Not very impressed with Wittgren nor with McFarland so far this season either. When your pen is not deep, your starters need to pitch deep into the game. That’s why tapping Hicks as a starter makes no sense. Not sure what’s wrong with Hudson, but he didn’t deserve to be tagged with 4 earned runs.
Think we could get Wander Franco in a birds on the bat uniform in time for the first pitch today, hehehehehe? Not that he would alone make enough difference for this sorry squad.
Here’s my biggest fear. If the starting pitching improves a bit, but the hitting doesn’t, we’re going to get that horrible outcome of quality starts without wins. Also, middle relief is looking awful. But that is less an issue with quality starts going 6 1/3 innings or so.
I don’t know, Bob Reed, you are reading a lot into this. I would say that you have to assume that Marmol has some combination of inexperience and incompetence, until proven otherwise.
Now if he outmanages some senior managers, manipulating the matchups to steal a few wins, then you can say he’s a great, if sometimes vindictive manager. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen this flash of brilliance.
When everyone else in the lineup is ripping the cover off the ball, you tell your shortstop to go out there and play defense and don’t worry about the bat. (think Dal maxvill).
Obviously, that is not the case at present, with many bats struggling this season, at least so far.
I was hoping that last year was going to be somewhat of a breakout year for Bader, but now I’m not so sure.

The only toxic environment last season was during late July, went Shildt went out of his way to destroy the winning efforts of his players by sticking with Reyes. In hindsight, they should have fired him then, rather than wait until October.
This puts a lot of pressure on Marmol. I wasn’t a big Shildt fan, but at the end of the regular season they usually had a decent won-loss record. Shildt teams were streaky, which is hard on fans during the draw downs. But the bottom line is he won a lot more than he lost.
For the life of me I can’t understand why he kept sticking with Reyes in the closer role after Reyes had lost the ability to close games out. Probably paid a big role in his firing.Looking over Pujol’s stats at baseball reference, the season that stands out as a fluke is last year. Seeing as he is a Cardinal again, I hope this uptick in his stats continues, but it would be very unusual.
Like someone once said, “I root for the laundry, not who’s wearing it.”If you’ll recall, around late July, Reyes had a complete meltdown and couldn’t get a bat boy out, much less a major leaguer, yet Shildt kept trotting him out there for blown saves and blown tie games. My guess is that Mo ordered him to stop using Reyes in late game situations, and of course this had a spectacular consequence, the hottest MLB Team down the stretch.
Then, with the season on the line, in the wildcard winner take all game, Shildt trots Reyes out there AGAIN in a late inning tie game. He was a good as gone right then and there, IMHO
This reminds me of the year 2011, right around this time of year. Spoiler alert–Adam Wainwright didn’t pitch a single inning that year. We did win a championship
They will be using Reyes’ arm as a textbook case for medical school students for years to come. But that didn’t stop Schlidt from using him at a critical juncture of our last season. Gee, I wonder why he got fired, lol?
I don’t get the Shildt hero worship. His cardinal teams are streaky, not sure why. But he hasn’t won anything, at least not yet.
Everyone in the stadium, except one person, knows that Reyes is gonna throw a gopher ball. The easiest hold situation in baseball, 1/3 of an inning, and he couldn’t get ‘er done.
Reyes had some good outings toward the end of the season, but mostly as a setup guy, not 9th inning. La Russa had the same flaw of running out tired closers who had no chance of getting a save (think Franklin and Isringhausen, but he also got us a couple of championships and other pennants….I’m guessing the injuries are due to the wide assortment of pitches most pitchers have. Used to be they had a curveball, a fastball, and one other pitch. Now, they have several different types of fastball alone. Also, it is my understanding that the slider is very tough on the arm.
1-2-3 inning for Gallegos. That is what you want from your closer. Yes, technically, walking the bases loaded, then getting out of it counts as a save, but it is playing with fire and is unsustainable.
Last night’s loss was not very frustrating for me. The math is very straightforward.
For the first two months of the season, Reyes had an ERA of zero. Now it is 2.5. Therefore, his ERA over the last two and a half months has been 4.0, can you dig it?
Yes, I know he hasn’t blown many saves, it what about the blown tie games? Or the times he has been hit hard, but escaped with a save? Time to give him a couple weeks off, before he destroys the remainder of the season.
