You gotta think that pitching short teams are eyeing Matz. I’m thinking that a guy that was untradable is moving in the other direction.
Edman was one whose bat speed was down. Obviously something changed.
I read that he is meeting the ball farther out in front of the plate than he used to.
As of now I can’t see what any of this has to do with Oli.
Liberatore recovered from a horrendous beginning to pitch us back into the game. Take him out after the sixth, and you have a good confidence builder for him. I did not like putting him back out there in the 7th, even though Roycroft was the one to stink up the joint.
Baseball is only part talent. There is also the mental aspect. I wasn’t a huge Schlidt fan, but he took a bunch of average players and got above average results.
Yeah, they can say they want their up and coming guys to get at-bats in real big league games, to get experience and get evaluated. But of what vaule are those at-bats if most of them are in garbage time, to use a football analogy.

You might be right.
While throwing a four-seam fastball, in itself, doesn’t directly cause a Tommy John surgery (UCL reconstruction), the repetitive motion and high velocity associated with it can increase the risk of UCL injury, which can lead to the need for surgery.

He’s been pretty consistent for his entire Cardinal career, with an era around 5.00. Presumably they think there is some upside, but by the time it manifests itself, he’ll be a free agent and unsignable, for a small market club.
I’ll take the Pallante start and be glad we got it.
My how expectations have cratered. A year or two ago everybody on this thread, including me, was ready throw any starting pitcher with less than 5.2 innings of work under the buss. Now some are happy with 4.1 innings of work out of a starter, if they don’t give up more than two runs, lol!!
With respect to Pallante, how does one throw 92 pitches in 4.1 innings?
Someone said that he kept us in the game. Not really. When your starter only goes 4.1 innings, you are gonna use many relievers. And the more relievers you use, the more likely one of them is gonna have a bad night.
8 walks issued in 9.1 innings. That negates the fact that you out hit the opponent 11 to 8.

The difference in the seriers so far is that Trout has broken out of his early season slump, and Winn has not.

Someone has to pay for all those extra innings pitched. If you have a better idea on how to reduce the number games lasting longer than 10 or 11 innings, feel free to present it.
Part of they got right. The ghost runner doesn’t count as an earned run, if he scores.
Strange that two straight relievers let three runs in, two earned, each. Not good baseball.

With everyone in the lineup swinging for the fences, it doesn’t make much difference where you place them in the order. Once things settle down, I think you have to give Scott-2 a few turns at leadoff…..The Cardinals want him to the type of lead-off man that is more in line with Schwarber.

I know it is just spring training but Gray has looked awful. He has been pounded nearly every outing. Hopefully he has things figured out by Thursday.

Yeah, given the starting rotation we have, we’re gonna need some serious offense to win games. Other than Winn, I haven’t seen that much consistency from our home grown crop of guys moving up through the organization.
Heard anything about Yadi? I was hoping he would find us a few gems in DR.

At present, Goldschmidt is almost exactly at the average Hall of Fame first baseman in JAWS and WAR. He has an MVP and is a career .289/.381/.510 (139 OPS+) hitter. He’s over 2,000 hits, but there might be concern with 446 doubles, 362 home runs, 1,187 RBI and 1,204 runs from a first baseman.
Nolan Arenado – Ahead of Machado in JAWS (Arenado sits 18th), but a touch older. Arenado heads to his age-34 season. He has a 120 career OPS+ with 1,826 hits, 387 doubles, 341 home runs, 1,132 RBI, 944 runs and an unfair Coors Field stigma to fight. The defensive wizardry should help mitigate some of that, but this isn’t a done deal.
Can anybody imagine giving Andrew Kittredge $10M to play baseball as a middle reliever? I can’t.
Seems out of whack. The only thing I can think of is Kittridge lead the NL in ‘holds’ by a wide margin.
This might go back to the other discussion about how many innings you expect out of your starting pitchers. If the Baltimore answer is ‘below average’, then a good bridge to their closers is critical to their success.. I actually think we’re likely to have a better offense without him
If he’s replaced by Gorman, that would result in a slight decline in OPS from the 3rd sacker, based on last year’s stats. However, if you look at Arenado’s career numbers, he suffered a very precipitous drop in offense last year, from the prior season(s). I expect a partial bounceback. But Gorman might improve too.
As far as replacing Helsley, Romero, Fernandez, and King were absolutley horrible in allowing inherited runners to score last year. So their stats aren’t entirely reflective of their pitching ability.
The problem with the ‘let’s go with youth for a while’ strategy is that we tried that last year and we got a bunch of Mendoza Line activity, except for Winn.
I think they are going to have trouble scoring runs without Arenado and trouble closing out games without Helsley.

The Cardinals and closer Ryan Helsley have had no discussions about a long-term extension, the pitcher said at the team’s Winter Warm-Up event Saturday (via the Belleville News-Democrat). “Never really been any talk about extensions or anything like that. (I want to stay), but, you know, at the same time, it’s a two-way street, and if only one side wants it, it’s not going to work out,” Helsley said.Another option would be to go with a five slot rotation, but the bottom two positions might not be the same guys every five days. Say, for example, guys like like Matz, Milolas, Pallante, etc. could be used as either starters or long middle relief.
Let’s say on day 5 of the rotation, one of those guys pitches four effective innings, but their pitch count is getting kind of high, go ahead and yank them while you are leading the game, or tied. Why wait for them to melt down?
Then, as the rotation goes through another cycle, the guy you pulled after four inings and 70-75 pitches can probably start or pitch middle relief somewhat effectively toward the back end of that new rotation cycle.If they aren’t going to unload Matz and Mikolas, they might as well give it a try. Maybe pitching on extra rest will help them turn things around.
However, to make it work you are going to need a couple guys who can pitch two innings of middle relief, every 10 days or so. Chris Stratton was in this role for a few months, a couple of years ago, but they reverted to using him one inning at a time.Mo’s song, lol
