Shilt is managing like it’s the regular season. There are a lot more rest days now so you can yank a guy that doesn’t have it going. He’s already blown the save, so it is no longer a save situation. Why let him pitch any more?
Not sure I agree on Bader’s steal attempt. JMart has been swinging the bat well lately, and you know the Braves are looking for Bader to try to steal.

ERA is 23.14? I’m no baseball guru, but isn’t that a little high for a closer?

This is pretty close to a must win game. If we can win this series without using Flaherty again after today, we can go into LA with a reasonably good shot of winning game one and stealing home field advantage

CMart is not a two inning pitcher. Not a knock, most of them aren’t these days. How can Shildt not know this?
BTW, I thought Shildt did a great job managing, except for the bottom of the 9th.

I don’t think the Cards can afford to play this straight up, especially if we eventually play the Dodgers. They won 106 games, 15 more than us!
I just don’t see Bader hitting much. He got sent down, had a good run in AAA, then came back up and had a good run for a couple of weeks. Now he’s back to hitting Medoza line stats. I suppose they could start him, then pinch hit with runners in scoring position, or a runer on 3rd with less than two outs.

Likewise the starting pitching. I like the way they pulled Dakota after five scoreless innings, even though we eventually lost.
As far as relief pitching, you have a lot of days off in the postseason, we need a quick hook if someone has nothing on the ball.

That’s why you don’t want to be in the wild card game (as opposed to winning the division). He had a nice hop too. Looks like he was trying to be a hero and make a play at the plate.

Godly needs to come alive for the postseason. Shildtt needs to do a better job with his bullpen selections too.
I expect Flaherty to pitch well, but he’s already thrown almost 200 innings. I’m not sure if they wii cap that at some point

We played the Cubs 7 games down the stretch, and won five of them. I can live with that.

It is going to be very tough to win a pennant, and even more so to win it all. This season there are many teams with better win/loss records than us. For us to have a chance we will need three starters to be at the top of their game, plus several relievers. And we are going to have get guys in from 3rd with less than 2 outs, something we are not that good at.

Pull him after the seventh. The Scrubs aren’t gonna score 9 runs in two innings, even if Miller is in there.

You guys ever read ‘Ball Four’, by Jim Bouton? I nominate Shlidt for the Joe Schultz award, lol.

You could make a case for using both Micolas and Flaherty tomorrow. If we get 5 good innings out of Micolas, and we are leading by a two runs or less, why not bring in flaherty at the first sign of trouble? We win tomorrow and we get a bit of a rest.

Yeah, just when you think Shlidt is an above average manager, he reverts to quite ordinay. He leaves Waino in there until he gives up 12 safe hits in 4.1 innings, then brings in Miller, again.

Can we start a Go Fund Me site? Someone needs to buy Shildt some brains. He’s doing a good job overall, but when it comes to C Mart, he keeps getting brain farts. The guy is not a workhorse closer. Why can’t Shildt figure that out?

Oh great, the worst umpiring crew in baseball. The only thing that could make it worse would be if C.B. Bucknor was here.

Has he ever made a call 1/10 as bad as the great Denkinger?

The problem isn’t Fowler, it’s Goldy. He’s striking out over five times for every two walks, often times with runners in scoring position, on 3rd with less than 2 outs, or the bases loaded(last night).
Perhaps one of these young guys will catch fire, but it is unlikely.

Last I looked he has a WAR of 2.0, but if Goldy can run that up to 4.7 by October, we might have a chance. That is the floor we are paying for.
Bottom line, these free agent signings rarely pan out. Neither do rebuilds that take more than a couple of years. There are many pitching injuries every year that turn things upside down quickly.
To be competitive, you have to be steadily bringing along players and not blowing your wad on big contracts that never pay out.
Look at LAA. One bad contract (Pujols) has doomed a big market club to a decade of mediocrity, despite having one of the all time greats on the roster (Trout)

If you think they have a good farm system, why not just stop making trades (except emergency hole filling), and stop the massive free agent contract signing?
Even after that great run , Goldy is way off what we paid for.

I am familiar with the Detroit Tigers because I live less than an hour from Comerica Park. I actually saw a Tigers game there a couple of months ago (free tickets)
They are on pace to win 50 games and lose 112!!
Are you sure you want to rebuild? For one thing, even if everything goes well, you usually end up with a good club that makes the playoffs, then falters short of a pennant, much less a championship.
We could have that with one relief pitcher and one bat.

If what you say about 11 LOB and 11 K’s, and you probably are, that also reflects on the manager and coaching staff

Don’t get me wrong, Shildt is not the worst manager in MLB. But he is average at best, and average is not going to cut it

Everyone in the stadium, watching tv, looking at the internet, and listening on radio knows that C Mart will blow the save, except one person. Why is that person the manager?

If we get into a one run lead in the 9th situation, they can’t still be thinking about handing the ball to C-Mart, can they? I would go with Miller until he has a bad outing or two.

That throw really bailed out C-Nart. Most of C-Mart’s outings have been fair to poor lately. Had they lost that game with a 4 run cushion in the top of the 10th it would have sent them on a long losing streak, most likely.
If they don’t secure bullpen help they are writing off the season

Shildt needs to go back to managing school. That lead off was a dead giveaway, and the double sealed the deal. Oh well,

If they are not going to pinch hit for Bader in situation like last night, then they should insert him in the 9th spot in the batting order, with the pitcher 8th.
