Way to go Redbirds! Another good pitching performance! Go for the sweep tomorrow!
The two starting pitchers acquired at the deadline had good outings this week. Great work by the bull pen the last two nights.
Great game and win for the Redbirds! Pallante pitched well and held the Yanks down until the offense could push some runs across the plate. Good team win.
Wow! That means Packy Naughton is the only pitcher signed in the off-season that remains on the 40-Man roster and is not on the IL?
Well, it looks like Mo has addressed the gaps in the pitching staff. Two of the guys are still under control for next season.
Did Bader find himself in the dog house? Or, did the Cards figure he is what he is and do not expect much more. I kinda figured he hit on both points.
Standing alone this looks like a decent deal for the reasons pointed out by several other posts. Mo may have got the club a quality starter on the cheap if Q can continue to pitch well. Having said that, his job is not done here IMO.
“The great ghost”, a similar thought came to my mind as I watched tonight’s game wind down. This club is lucky to be in the NL Central. Not sure they would be a contender for a playoff spot if they were in the NL East or West.
Having said this … It is really amazing that this team is where they are given the injuries and roster deficiencies.
The Redbirds need to find a way to get something going offensively. Not getting much out of catchers, Dickerson, Nootbaar or Sosa. It could be awhile before Yadi or O’Neill get back … and no guarantee they will return and contribute immediately. Ugh!
The Cardinals would not have given Ollie the job if they did not think he was qualified. The Cardinals generally like to promote from within if they believe they an internal candidate. Have there been growing pains – sure. However, on the balance, I cannot say I have been disappointed with the job he has done.
As stated before, the manager does not build the roster. He tries to figure out how to win with what he has … and he is winning.

McFarland entered tonite’s game with a 7.65 ERA and a WHIP of 1.75. These stats only got worse with his outing tonite. How much longer can they keep utilizing this guy?
Ugh … batter beats out a grounder to first to start the bottom of the second. This does not seem to be trending the Cardinal’s way.
Well, that stunk. A couple of thoughts …
1. The Redbirds left 11 on base. That was the real killer here. IMO, you cannot do that and win games against the good team like the Rays.
2. Location of last pitch – Hrabosky questioned that pitch call in the post game show. I was thinking the same thing. Not sure that location plays to Ver Hagen’s strengths.
3. Redbird pitching and defense was great … with the exception of Ver Hagen’s last pitch.
I was thinking the same thing … who moves out when O’Neal and Carlson return? Noot and who else? Donovan, Gorman and Yepez are all contributing.
How much longer do they stick with McFarland?
Well, in the top of the tenth the Cubbies pen could not hold down the Redbirds! Cards lead 7-3 with the Cubs coming to bat in the bottom of the inning.
Wow! Sosa misses third base and cannot score the go ahead run. How does that happen at the major league level! Ugh!
Another good win! Strong start by Dakota. Goldy another good game. It was nice to see Nolan have a multi-hit game … need him to get going again. Need Dickerson Noot to get going as well!
The Front Office missed their chance at Correa … he was probably the best of the available free agents. The contract he signed with Minnesota was for less than people were predicting. Bogaerts is a rental … pretty sure I heard or read he wants to test the free agent market.
The real issue here is that the Cardinals continue to develop decent, but not great position players. The most consistent contributors to the offense last season were acquired via trade (e.g. Arenado, Goldschmidt and O’Neal). Still waiting for more consistency or break outs from Kizner, Edmund, Carlson, Bader and whoever plays short or second (assuming Edmund) moves to short.
Hoping Gorman and/or Walker break this pattern of player development.
I cannot argue with many of the points made by Rains. One could argue that the approach the Front Office took to build this line up was fairly risky. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.
– One could argue that Jeff Albert should have been out the door at least one year ago. His results have not been overly impressive.
– One could argue that PDJ should never have been the prime path at short. His offensive drop off has been well documented. Expecting him to turn things around was a huge risk. They should have pursued a free agent or given another internal candidate the job out of the chute. I feel they stuck with PDJ because of his contract.
– One could argue they bet too much on the “reunion tour gang” to deliver results. This has not worked out so well to this point. Maybe things will turn around, but age is a real factor here and cannot be ignored.
– Dickerson has been as disappointment as well. How many plate appearances do you give him before you cut strings? 100? 150? 200?Yep … agree with much of what you posted sooner. I was thinking through many of the same issues this morning over my coffee. The lack of offensive production is a tad more than frustrating to me. Didn’t we witness a similar start for the offense last season. What upgrades did we make?
