Ha! Makes me think how RBIs are not viewed in the same light as years ago. Who was it on a recent broadcast (maybe Smoltz) talking about how he disagreed with its devaluation as a stat? Whoever it was said said it’s a real skill and talked about how good Goldy is at it.
Anyway, Edman does so many different things well, e.g., his situational baserunning is very good and that is very crucial in close games. He’s the rarer commodity in today’s game. One or two dimensional talents are in much greater supply, which should lower their relative value. I think many of the valuation metrics are individual-based and lose sight of this, and this can lead to suboptimal roster construction.
EuroDandy…Yeah, there’s so many things that I admire about him as a ballplayer that it’s difficult for me to pinpoint, or to illustrate with words or numbers, the entire net value of the total package to a ballclub. The best thing to do to get an accurate read is to simply watch the guy play for a season or two. He does all of the little things to perfection on top of possessing an abundance of natural talent. I just like him.
