I wish Lance all the best with his return to St. Louis. The club needs him to provide quality innings. He was decent down the stretch for the Dodgers. I think this could be a good deal if Lance can pitch to numbers he achieved with the Dodgers after the trade deadline (almost 6 innings per start, 4.36 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 6+ K per nine).
Having said this, my biggest fear has been that the cost of quality pitching will too expensive for the budget the Front Office is working to. Thus, they will opt for going the route of second and third tier pitchers or reclamation projects to fill gaps.
November 16, 2023 at 9:12 pm in reply to: FOX selling regional sports networks to Disney to Sinclair to MLB??? #237384This has turned into a real mess … looks like they are close to one-year deals with the NBA & NHL … nothing firm for MLB. A Bloomberg article quoted a Sinclair Attorney who believes Diamond Sports will be shut down by the end of 2024. In doing so, their tv deals with MLB would be terminated.
I assume MLB will not comment on what comes next (‘24 and beyond) until they have a definitive agreement with Diamond Sports.
My thoughts are aligned with those of BlackHills Card. Did I read somewhere that Kennedy is the grandson of former ML Infielder Don Money?
September 13, 2023 at 7:17 am in reply to: 2023 StL Game #145: Tuesday, September 12 at Orioles #233814Agree! It has been tough to watch Waino struggle this season. Would be nice to see him close it out with a few positive outings and at least one more win.
Watched the Chiefs play last night. Bit of a “nail biter”, but they held on to win. Rajcic pithed well! Got into a little trouble in the second inning with walks. He was able to get out of the inning allowing only one run. He settled down after that and pitched very effectively. In all, he pitched six innings, throwing 87 pitches (54 strikes), gave one hit and three walks.
Peoria was able to score one run the in the both the third and fourth innings. Then Mendoza hit a two-run homer in the fifth that put Peoria up three. Cedar Rapids attempted a late comeback. However, the bull pen, although a little shaky in the eighth and ninth, was able to hold them off.
Yeah, I do not see Mo or Ollie going anywhere right now. I am betting both are with the Cardinal organization thru the duration of Mo’s contract. Marmol will be evaluated for retention once Mo leaves.
I had hoped that DeWitt would come to his senses like Gussie did. Let Mo go at mid-season, hire another PBO and start the rebuild with an in-depth review of the organization during the second half of the season. Failure to do so tells me ownership is comfortable with Mo having the capability of righting the ship … despite the track record cited above.
The Front Office must reconstruct the pitching staff and avoid making anymore disastrous trades. I see the task at hand as challenging … even for a Front Office that has a good track record. As such, I hope for the best, but …
That’s a winner! Two in a row!
I heard TLR say on a few occasions that he was satisfied with the starter going six innings and holding the opponents to three runs or less. He felt that this type of performance gave his team a chance to win. If you accept that view of what a starter should provide … this season the Cardinals are falling way short of the innings portion of this goal by starting pitchers.
The guys listed above meet the ERA criteria of this goal. However, they fall short of averaging six innings or more per start. That may be okay for a fifth starter, maybe even a fourth starter. However, the Cardinals need their first three starters to average 6+ innings per start over the course of the season. I am hoping that Hudson and Thompson can be stretched out and maintain their ERA’s. I am not confident that Matz can.
… and 2025 (according to Baseball Reference and Cots)!
Is it considered tampering if they start naming specific players before free agency starts?
Had a bad feeling going into this game. Thought I’d go watch the Chiefs play instead. Well, that did not go well either … they lost 14-3. Ugh!
A lot of injuries this season … just another issue contributing to a very frustrating season. Hopefully, everyone is healthy and ready to go as Spring Training starts.
Is Dakota Hudson turning into another Jeff Suppan?
Senga looks like a nice pick up for the Mets. They signed him for $15m per year for five years with a sixth year option. Coming 8th tonight, he has started 22 games, tossed 122 innings, 1.28 WHIP and 3.30 ERA. The
Redbirds could use two or three pitchers like him.Good outing by Hudson. Hopefully he is on his way to returning to form.
I would be surprised if the Front Office were to move Contreras this offseason. I think the Cardinals realize they were not as well prepared as they may have thought they were as they entered the regular season for the reasons cited above. They club needs to add talent to the staff, as well as revise and firm up their plan for pre-game prep and game management before spring training. Then use spring training to get pitchers, catchers and coaches on the same page. This will help all immensely.
I still contend that Contreras has not been the sole issue with pitching performance.

Will be interesting to see the return for Flaherty.
August 1, 2023 at 7:37 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #2300661TD, do not forget Darryl Kile. Jocketty picked him up after two miserable seasons in Colorado. He was a very solid starter for the Redbirds.
It would seem to me that the Cardinal Analytics people need to get to work. They will need to find one or two veterans that have fallen on tough times, but are capable of turning things around. The franchise has done that in the past (e.g. Carpenter and Mikolas).
Agree … they did the best they could with what the had to sell.
The Cardinals are a big reason the Cubs are back in contention. You cannot be the reason why your arch nemesis is a contender for the Division Title. Very disappointing.
July 30, 2023 at 9:44 am in reply to: what would constitute a successful run to the trade deadline? #229800Looks about right bccran with the exception of Helsley. Not sure they will move both Helsley and Hicks.
I just do not know if they will get many 2024 difference makers when pushing out rentals and a number of mediocre players.
I would hope that DeWitt initiates an After-Action-Review to look over the past five to seven years. Determine what has gone right, what could have gone better and what they need to do different. I fear the Front Office is going to give us more of the same if they do not make changes to their approach … in multiple areas. This analysis needs to be done before the season ends so they are ready to go for the off-season.
Wow!
July 26, 2023 at 11:45 am in reply to: what would constitute a successful run to the trade deadline? #229229Did the Front Office miss badly on Contreras’ defensive skills, the effectiveness of the pitching staff, the effectiveness of the teams defense or some combination of the three? I cannot put everything on Contreras.
