Brew crew lose a tough one to the Giants 2-1….Giants get a questionable bases loaded balk in the 8th to score the game winner. Leone strikes out Wong to end the game.
Their big mistake was not adding another starter after Matz this past Winter, you had to much injury history and inexperience on the staff going into Spring training, and then they just wasted money on Witgren and VerHagen who hadn’t done anything and still haven’t. I gotta think signing one of McHugh or even Tepera would have been a much better way to use that money.
While not a trade issue, I would look also at replacing the entire training staff after this year this team has way to many injuries with strains and pulls and so on.
Unless cards comeback they will have played 16 series against teams .500 or better, they have won 2 of those 16 series
The shopping list better include another relief pitcher for high leverage situations….though their scouting of relievers is shaky at best
If Verhagen would throw nothing but his slider and waste a fastball up once in a while he would be a lot better….similar to how Wisler pitches for Tampa Bay
This team hasn’t been able to hit decent pitching for the last 4 years or more, way to many streak hitters
I would think Burleson is a trade candidate along with others for a starting pitcher with the way he is hitting
Hopefully if they do trade Yepez it is in a package for a starter (Montas or Castillo)…you can find relief pitching for less normally….if you got a starter most likely Palante would go back to the pen and you would be fine
Graham has played his way up to 23 in the Athletic’s mock the last few weeks of the NCAA tourney, so him falling to the Cards in the 2nd round is remote….would take him at 22 w/o any hesitation
Bullpen could be a bigger concern if Pallante stays in the rotation and then you have Flaherty and Matz coming back.
Outside of Helsley/Cabrera and Gallegos you don’t have a lot there
Don’t think he is a first round pick but would like to see Cardinals pick up the Oklahoma Univ. Shortstop Peyton Graham in 2nd round….really been impressed by his play could play multiple positions…think he is 6-4 and can run and hit
I don’t think there is anyway the Cardinals could trade both McGreevy and Graceffo, they just don’t have enough quality starting pitching in the minors to trade both. Could be wrong but that would be risky for a team that has lacked Starting pitching for a # of years. I could see one of the two going along with other prospects for a starter. I am not sure Montas is going to be the guy they get though.
For the last several years the Cardinals have gone into the season a starting pitcher or 2 short, in reality this years staff is 2 short b/c you are relying on starters with injury history/age/inexperience….not going after two free agent starters this past off season looks like a a critical mistake by management.
Internal options for a starter are pretty slim, I think you would be looking at Woodford (not sure mgmt trusts him as a starter), Oviedo (probably needs a season at least at AAA), Rondon (is mainly a relief pitcher) and VerHagen (I’m not sold on him at all as a starter or reliever). Not sure what else they have. I consider Libratore a starter already with the injuries to Matz and Flaherty.
Outside options I guess would be Montas with the A’s, possibly Castillo with the Reds in fire sale mode, I think the Marlins would jump at trading a starter (Not named Alcantra)for some hitting prospect(s)
Would be surprised to see the cardinals spending the big money on a older Starter Ala: Bumgarner, Grienke.
Dickerson has been disappointing considering they have probably 3 or 4players that can cover his spot now (Yepez/Donovan/Nootbar/Burleson) I kind of liked the signing in spring for not a ton of money….now not so much, of course your not going to look good hitting below the Mendoza line.
I just don’t see anyway they can rely on hicks as a starter, his command is just not there, he could really use a year at AAA as a starter and hopefully get there. I’m assuming they don’t think he has the durability in his arm to be a relief pitcher.
ESPN has article on Nationals maybe entertaining Offers on Soto…assuming the Cardinals could afford/sign him and were interested (can’t see why they wouldn’t be) what kind of package do you all think the Cardinals could throw at them.
Wonder if one of O’Neill or Carlson (Carlson would be my preferred choice b/c of his low hitting exit velo) could do it along with say Gorman and a pitching prospect.
Anyway something to mull.
