I have to think the Giants are the biggest loser in this one, they need a superstar player desperately and their attendance hasn’t really came back to pre pandemic levels

For a little perspective on this deal the cardinals rotation last year (6 pitchers)…Mikolas, Matz, Waino, Monty, Hudson and flaherty made $67 million

The Projected Rotation this year w/ Gray taking 10 mill the first year for 5 pitchers is $62 Million

I would look at it as they have an additional 5.5 mill to spend….hopefully they will spend it….O’Neill has had 2 years to capture 2021 and hasn’t done it b/c on injury and a lack of contact, I doubt much would have changed for him in St.Louis, so Boston may be a good change of scenery for him

The difference b/w Arozarena/Garcia and Tyler O’Neill is that the cardinals gave hardly any major league at bats to Arozarena/Garcia where O’Neill has had ample at bats & seasons to show he is an oft injured inconsistent hitter at best

With Gray getting $10 million the first year that puts the projected starting rotation at around $62 million, that is $5 million less than last years(2023)starting rotation…so they still have some flexibility and could have even more if they say were to add Matz in a trade with O’Neil or Carlson.

They also have to address the bullpen. Gallegos I think is a big key he has made 186 appearances the last 3 years.

Right now I guess the bullpen looks something like:

    Helsley….injury plagued year in 2023

Gallegos…gave up more hits than innings pitched for first time in 5 years
John King…was pretty solid after the trade from Rangers in 20 appearances

Liberatore…pitched well in September 12 ip over 10 appearances 5 hits allowing 2 earned runs …still not sure on him though

Pallante….not a good year at all, after a solid 2022, needs to have a goood spring

Romero….needs to cut down on the walks but does have a lot of strikeouts

Naghton may be a lefthanded option if he can stay healthy and they don’t really have that many righthanded options left

A minimum 2 quality arms will probably be needed in free agency or a trade

Zach Thompson would I guess be in the mix or the #6 starter/long releif

2024 cardinals pitching rotation as it is now makes around $10 million more than the 2023 Rotation going by Spotrac

Going to be real interesting to see how much Yamamoto gets I have seen anywhere from $200 million up to $280 million over the length of his contract….plus the posting fee to Orix

Grays stats last year in 32 starts he gave up more than 3 earned runs only 3 times, he led the AL in FIP and HR allowed per9….3 years $75 million

    2023 Cardinal starters
Mikolas had 35 starts gave up more than 3 earned runs in 13 of them
Matz had 17 starts gave up more than 3 earned runs in 6 of them
Flaherty had 27 starts gave up more than 3 earned in 9 games

    Other free agents
Montgomery 32 starts gave up more than 3 earned runs in 6 of them
Snell had 32 starts gave up more than 3 earned runs in 2 of them
Nola had 32 starts gave up more than 3 earned runs in 15 of them…7 years $172 million
Stroman 25 starts gave up more than3 earned runs in 7 of them
Giolito 32 starts gave up more than 3 earned in 12 of them

    Already Signed
Gibson 33 starts gave up more than 3 earned in 11 of them…..1 year $12 million

I think Walker has played outfield for a a year and a half so he should improve some, don’t think he will ever be much more than an average defender.

I would bet he improves quite a bit at the plate next year and he was pretty solid for a rookie this past year.

I don’t see anyway they could afford Soto unless they trade Goldschmidt for him

Will not be shocked if they trade 1 of Mikolas or Matz and a Outfielder for another starter

Compared to some deals last year not so bad….Gray and Gibson are pretty good adds to the Rotation, still not sure what to make of the Lynn signing

Carlos Rodon ….6 years $162 million
    De Grom…..5 years $185 million

Just a quick glance at the starts last year:

    Gibson had 17 quality starts
Flaherty and Hudson combined had 12
    Lance Lynn had 13
    Blake Snell had 20
    Sonny Grey had 17
    Jordan Montgomery had 20

The bullpen was a huge problem especially early on last year, I still remember that ridiculous 2 outs in the 9th home run Helsley gave up to the backup catcher in San Francisco…. Not sure that guy had another hit in the majors the rest of the season🤬

I don’t have a problem with one of Gibson or Lynn….Gibson looks to be the better of the 2 off last year, so Lynn getting $10 mill could be overkill.

I think the other thing Mikolas is valued higher by the Front office than the fans and most, he definitely needs to repeat his 2022 season for this to workout.

My other thought if you sign 2 innings eaters (Lynn/Gibson) does that mean you can take a chance on Snell as the Ace.

I guess the silver lining is these are short term deals and if it does not work this year I can’t see any way this front office or Manager return for 2025 and the new regime will not be saddled with a bunch of bad contracts.

they better sign yamamoto after this then….surely they learned their lesson about having a bunch of #4-5 starters last year

The Rangers/diamondbacks 2022 seasons I referenced is more to show it does not take a total overhaul of the MLB roster to get pretty good pretty quick, if you can acquire the right players to fit into your roster….now whether Cardinal management can accomplish this in 1 year is another question

I am not sure the Cardinals deal with Bally’s/Diamond sports is all that great now….I think they get around $67 million a year and they are in the middle of a 15 year agreement

In 2022 the Rangers were 26 games under .500

In 2022 The Dbacks were 14 games under .500

I would look at 2 of Monty, Snell, Gray and Nola

I may take a flyer on Alex Cobb on an incentive deal….think he had hip surgery and may miss first month or 2….but he is a solid starter if healthy…cost probably won’t work.

Lugo is also interesting b/c he could slide into the pen if he is not a starter.

As for Relievers that’s tricky…I think they need 2 @ minimum and they won’t have much money left b/c they will have to pay for starting pitching, would like to see them get 1 in a trade maybe for O’Neal to a team desperate for an OF hitter with power

I look at it as this is do or die for the front office/Marmol….no way they will be back with another year like 2023

The Padres financial situation might be something to keep an eye on, they had to take out a $50 million loan to cover payroll in September 2023 according to the Athletic.

They also sold 3.3 million tickets this year to games

“MLB teams commonly tap into lines of credit to pay their bills, prompting some officials in the sport to suggest any concern should be tempered because the Padres were ultimately creditworthy enough to draw the loan. But other officials briefed on the team’s finances who were not authorized to speak publicly viewed the Padres’ situation as worrisome.”

I believe the rangers also DFA’d Garcia and resigned him back after no other team claimed him to add a little context.

My biggest concern is the cardinals scouting of Latin Players, including their own.

Apparently one of the Cardinals assistant hitting coaches took a job as assistant hitting coach at Ole Miss Softball, he came to the Cardinals from Seton Hall where he coached Softball….if that does not sum up the resources spent on this team and staff then I don’t know what does.

This concerns me a little bit, this easily could be that Dewitt is to cheap to eat the remaining year on Marmol’s contract, if he is that cheap I don’t see him paying what is needed thru free agency to get a couple of front of the rotation starting pitchers
