I’m thinking that they’re going to offer Hjerpe less than his slot value of $3.18M, which would mean that they’re saving bonus pool money for later in the draft. Just speculating….
Hjerpe was one of the best pitchers in college this year, don’t think he is going too far underslot, if at all.
This last pitcher may be underslot.
Cards took Bryson mautz, another left handed pitcher from San Diego university. Could be a late bloomer far as a starter but right now projects as a reliever. This low in draft probably about as good any. I’m not big on taking high schoolers so in I’m glad they have stayed away from that.

Another easy sign in the 2nd. Might make a 4 or 5 guy someday. I think we are in a good position to sign a potential impact player HS kid in the 3rd-4th. Tomorrow will be interesting.
I don’t think you will get a good high school player to sign later on, I think cards pick again in the 90s. Most those guys will figure if they go to college, they might be picked higher and get more money but I guess you can take a shot.
70 Brycen Mautz
LHP San Diego San Diego, CAAfter pitching largely in relief in 2021 for the Toreros, Mautz saw his stuff really tick up heading into 2022. The long lefty has touched 96, sitting comfortably with a heavy, running 92-94. He mixes in a high 70s curveball, a low 80s slider and can turn over a mid-80s changeup that’s been shown to be effective against righty bats. The slider is the bread and butter with depth and disappearing action. Mautz has some deception in a short(ish) arm delivery and some tempo coming down the bump. There’s some effort here and an audible grunt, so scouts do have that to consider when projecting out starter capabilities. Mautz was very good in 2022 and if a team believes he can start as a pro, he’ll go in the second or third round.

The only thing UCONN knows more than baseball is cakes, for all here who may not know. Her cakes are indescribable…….but do not come cheap….unless she really likes you. UCONN just sent me a dandy(free of charge) last month for my anniversary. It was an unbelievable RRV (Rich Red Velvet) 5 layer cake, which featured a sliding Tommy Edman as it’s topper. Would you take a chance on Tennessee pitcher Ben Joyce in the draft today? He hit 105.5 on the radar gun this spring.
Question: What percentage of guys have hand shake deals done well before the draft? 75%? I’d take the over on that actually.
I do not know but is at least that. If a player is taken in Rds 1-10 they mostly sign. Teams don’t draft players they don’t think they can sign. There are of course exceptions.
I think it would be much lower, because you don’t know how the draft is going to break.
Do they discuss what it would take to actually sign? Yes. That have to…But can you reach a handshake agreement that you are going to draft player X and he is going to sign for a certain amoount? Very difficult.
Now, it’s rumored the Reds had such an agreement in place with the player they drafted last night, and I am assuming Brock Porter will be drafted by the Rangers today with the $2.3 million in space they have available from the Kumar Rocker deal, but I think in terms of actual handshake agreements, it is very limited.
