I will take Montgomery over Bader anyday, guy is great defensively but he hasn’t done anything at the plate
August 2, 2022 at 3:59 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #193655While I never would have done the Soto deal for top prospects, if all the Cardinals add is Quintana and Stratton that is just a total failure from the front office. They definitely need another starter and a 7th or 8th inning Man that is reliable in the bullpen.
I would rather pitch Quintana over Hudson any day of the week
August 1, 2022 at 10:51 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #193443Not sure what to make of Stratton…he was good the last 2 years 2020 and 2021….he gave up 5 runs in 1 outing in June of 2022, has 2 saves and 8 holds w/ 5 blown saves. Maybe he was their closer before Bednar and couldn’t handle that role.
Can’t be any worse than VerHagen who I don’t think knows how to pitch at the Major league level
(guy should be throwing his slider 95% of the time)August 1, 2022 at 9:53 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #193432Passat’s ESPN article says Cardinals May receive another player from the Pirates in the deal….if I read it right
August 1, 2022 at 9:34 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #193424That’s a good deal, but they will still need more pitching help
August 1, 2022 at 4:30 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #193379The more interesting thing on Montas was the lack of quality prospects given up, especially after what Castillo went for. He is like a solid #3 starter to me if healthy, but the cardinals could use any starter right now
August 1, 2022 at 3:55 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #193365Montas went for quanity not quality…..think his trade value was lower b/c of the injury.
Also I wonder if Cardinals Front Office is not using The supposed interest in Soto as a diversion for not doing anything or paying anymore $
August 1, 2022 at 12:18 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #193322No way I give up Walker or Wynn for anybody knowing the Cardinals budget limits…..when was the last time the Cardinals even had a top shortstop prospect….Gary Templeton?
July 31, 2022 at 5:06 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #193264Rodon and Brebia (bullpen) would be good additions…heck I would take Cobb if the Giants are sellers
De jong doesn’t have any trade value right now….Sosa while nothing great this year could help Philly some with a little regular playing time.
JoJo Romero is like a career 8 ERA….maybe they will just cut him to clear a spot on the 40 man
I’d offer Gorman, Libertore, O’Neil, Paniagua & Hence. If they don’t take it I would move on….Corbin is washed no reason for the Cardinals to take him….Donovan could take over at 2nd, Soto would replace O’Neil. (No way I would trade Walker or Wynn)
The problem is you still need starting pitching
July 25, 2022 at 12:32 am in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 98 thread – Tuesday, July 26 at Blue Jays #192468I really am starting to question the overall organization’s will to win a World Series ring. It’s no secret that Dewitt can really squeeze a nickel, then you have the baseball ops wasting money year over year on non-factor players they keep signing with a restricted budget and leaving the team at least 1 possibly 2 starting pitchers short, you have numerous players injured with strains and muscle pulls etc. seemingly every year (one wonders if this is because they are to tight-fisted to pay for a real training staff) and I am not so sure this draw 3 million fans and just get into the wildcard mentality they seem to have hasn’t permeated to the players, because I have seen nothing from this team this year that they could beat a team with a pulse.
Not like there is 60+ pitchers draft eligible in college with sub 3 era’s.
Helsley who is an All-star this year had an ERA over 4 at Northeastern in Oklahoma just for reference
In Rounds 2-4 only 14 high school players drafted….that seems unusually low
70 Brycen Mautz
LHP San Diego San Diego, CAAfter pitching largely in relief in 2021 for the Toreros, Mautz saw his stuff really tick up heading into 2022. The long lefty has touched 96, sitting comfortably with a heavy, running 92-94. He mixes in a high 70s curveball, a low 80s slider and can turn over a mid-80s changeup that’s been shown to be effective against righty bats. The slider is the bread and butter with depth and disappearing action. Mautz has some deception in a short(ish) arm delivery and some tempo coming down the bump. There’s some effort here and an audible grunt, so scouts do have that to consider when projecting out starter capabilities. Mautz was very good in 2022 and if a team believes he can start as a pro, he’ll go in the second or third round.
This is what I found on Mautz on a quick search, pretty good site for prospect info

Their are a ton of college hitters left, the Tennessee guys, The Oklahoma shortstop Graham among some of the names
Right Mets drafted Rocker last year and got a comp pick since he didn’t sign with them….it’s the same with high school players I think….NIL is also a factor this year with high schoolers but I’m not sure how much a college baseball player can get….but this might be more of a factor in the later rounds with high school and college players
Hjerpe was the college pitcher of the year
Most mocks had him around 20-27
Porter/Barreria/Prielipp/Hjerpe/snelling
A lot of pitchers are still available
Rangers are not a well run club
Cade Horton seems to be rising among the pitchers, he reminds me a lot of Helsley and he already has had Tommy John and came back like gang busters in the NCAA tourney
Rangers probably wishing they didn’t release him earlier this year
