Holland is a good example of them spending money, but is also a good example of why you don’t sign old relievers…though fans at the time were clamoring for a closer type at least only a 1 year deal
Trevor Miller is another example of this though he was good the first year then not so good after that year and injured a lot.
Pat Neshek could be the counter though to the old relievers, but he was not a hard thrower, that was a very good bullpen signing, should have resigned him b/c he didn’t make much and was productive.
Ver Hagen makes $3 mill a year at most,….I would say they took a flyer….they should have learned from Holland and Miller but at least he didn’t cost much, if guy would throw his slider 95% of the time and stay healthy he might be OK.
Cecil….was a terrible signing
They signed Fowler b/ c they desperately needed a lead off man….guy just fell off a cliff
De Jong signing was bad the last 2 years and probably will be bad this upcoming but at the time it is similar to what the braves do with their young players, didn’t work out, but it’s not ridiculous money at least
CMart wasn’t on huge $ either and he was pretty good for part of the contract fell off at the end when he got hurt…

Mikolas has been a very good addition, eats innings and is a solid pitcher
Not sure you win the 2011 World Series w/o Berkman so that was a huge signing.
Beltran was a very good signingJohnny Peralta was a meh signing pretty solid the first 2 years not much his last 2 years, probably overpaid with the last 2 years being down
The good they don’t sign a ton of free agents and no high dollar ones….their track record is probably middle of the road
If I am a Giants fan I am not real happy….you sign Conforto coming off shoulder surgery to a $36 million 2 year deal and scrap the deal for Correa over some ankle injury from a # of years ago… I realize the length of the deal on Correa and the Money over the life of the deal is a lot different but I don’t think I would be real happy especially as offensively challenged and lack of star players they are.
Outside of Rodon, don’t see that happening, the only other Free Agent starting pitcher that might move the needle is Eovaldi who I have not seen a lot of but has OK #’s, not sure what the money would be on him, maybe a Stripling type deal.
As for trade targets I think you would be looking at Pablo Lopez of the Marlins who need hitting, they might also want to trade Trevor Rogers who was awful last year and is left handed which would give the Cardinals 3 lefty’s in the rotation which is unlikely.
Bieber I think you would have to blow Cleveland away to get him.
A couple of outside the box trades might be Alex Cobb of the Giants or Merrill Kelly of the Dbacks….both are mid 30’s with at least 2 years left on their deals and both under 10 million a year.
The Giants need hitting as bad as the Marlins do and the Dbacks need any young talent
There is a free agent left handed bat with power available to DH and play some first base that may be pretty cheap if the cardinals were really pursuing that option….Brandon Belt

It seems they have plenty of starters but they don’t have a true #1 starter. As of right now I don’t think Hudson would be in the starting 5. I could see it as Flaherty/Mikolas/Monty/Waino/Matz. The issue though you have significant injury concerns with Flaherty and Matz.
Hudson may be next up, though I think Pallante is someone to watch he was quite good until the innings caught up with him late in the year…. He may be one year away from the rotation.
They have plenty of trade chips to get a starter but can they get a front of the line starter is the question.
Just for reference Dewitt’s estimated wealth is $4 billion, the Padres Owner Seidler Equity Partners who was mentioned above is $3 billion, he may be able to borrow money from his private equity investors, (which I would be interested in how he does this), but that would be a loan that would have to be paid back he can’t just use those funds on a whim there has to be an asset he is investing that money and then a return on that investment.
Dewitt if he was cash poor, which he isn’t, would have the same ability to access capital markets if they wanted/needed it to sign players…..they just choose not to do it.

They don’t have limited resources….they have many young players they can trade and they also have plenty of money if they wish to use it….hell the Padres just signed Bogearts to go with there other big contracts and I would be shocked if the Cardinals make less $ than the Padres
This team needs some one with a fiery temper, have to many low key personalities right now w/o Pujols, Molina and even Bader
Scared money don’t make money…. One thing this does is give flexibility to make a trade with your prospects for either a starting pitcher or a bat in the OF…..if they made the trade for Murphy that flexibility is greatly reduced.
I think they should have brought Quintana back, he was their best pitcher the last part of the year and that deal was reasonable, but assuming Matz is in the Rotation 3 lefthanders starting might be an issue…so I wonder if they would be more interested in a Righthanded starter like Basset or similar.
Though I have seen little evidence that they think they need another starter, which will be a mistake again
Cardinals crying poor a tradition like no other at winter meetings….might want to get Quintana and Vasquez on speed dial if they are going with the prices are to high song and dance again this year.

If they are keeping Winn as the long term shortstop option, and trading one of Donovan or Edman, Bogearts might make more sense than Swanson….think he could move to another position (2base) more easily plus a much better bat than Swanson over their careers.
That being said I don’t believe they will do anything at shortstop and are just looking at adding a catcher and maybe bringing back Quintana.
Definitely wouldn’t give up Carlson for him he seems to hit every other year and he also isn’t that good of a fielder
The Rangers may regret that signing in a few years b/c of injury history, but props to there ownership for spending money this year and last year on Segar and Simien, at least shows a commitment to try to get better.
I wouldn’t mind if they kept Reyes, but at some point you have to wonder what the arm injuries have taken out of him. I assume he will be on an innings/pitch count and probably can’t throw back to back games out of the pen this next year
Bellinger non-tendered by dodgers…..be interesting to see how they view him vs Conforto or someone else for a LH bat
I think next years rotation is going to be really interesting, especially if Wainwright returns. I’m not so sure I want to see Hudson as a starter next year, from what I have seen Pallante appears to have more upside as a starter. Also how Libratore factors in this as well, I would say his next appearances either at Memphis or St. Louis and Spring are going to be real important for his future as a starter in St. Louis. Then you have Flaherty can he recover from his injuries and regain some form/ ditto with Matz. Then on top of that you have the biggest mystery in Reyes and what they decide to do with him if he is healthy. Hopefully they don’t get caught short on starters again going into 2023.
To me he is a really streaky hitter who this year wasn’t drawing as many walks like he had in the past his OBP is down to .303 and his slugging % was way down this year….he is great defensively and covers a lot of ground but he and O’Neil seem to me to be really streaky hitters and not sure that is a great combo against quality pitching
