    – Agree with Knizner comes off the bench … Herrera in 3A for further development.

    – Back up SS is a bit of an issue IMO … DeJong probably stays at ML level as he can field the position but his bat is an issue … Donovan only logged 56 innings at short last season … the only way you move PDJ is a “Dexter Fowler-type” deal … who backs up Edman if PDJ is moved?

    – I am guessing Donovan starts at second unless Gorman is ready … Gorman has potential but I feel the FO believes he has work to do to prove he can hit consistently at the ML level (more contact, fewer strikeouts) … does he prove he can hit consistently or does he needs more 3A ABs?

I am guessing that the FO will determine if Walker gets called up around mid-year … they want him to play everyday.

The Dodgers must be desperate. They just signed Jason Heyward.

That is a low risk flyer. It is just a minor league deal and the Cubs are still paying his salary.

I’m surprised the Yankees didn’t jump on his contract, turn him into a 1st baseman cleanup hitter. Is Carp available for our bench?

Sometimes, us posters need to view trades from the other side, and be realistic. The Indians don’t have to trade Bieber.

There is a free agent left handed bat with power available to DH and play some first base that may be pretty cheap if the cardinals were really pursuing that option….Brandon Belt

The problem he seems to be hurt all the time of late and is coming off an awful last year

Mo is hilarious, of course the way is clear for O’Neil, Carlson and any others. They simply are not very good.

Seems like a lot of: We cant trade X, we can’t trade Y.

Is there any body you would not trade? I would be willing to trade ANYBODY for the right return.

The first two trades I would make right now:
    1. Try to trade Drew VerHagen for a low-level prospect. Probably have to accept “cash considerations”. This is a pure salary dump for the second trade.
    2. Call Kansas City and look to trade for Scott Barlow. Pitched to a 2.18 ERA last year, with 77Ks and 22BBs in 74.1 innings. WHIP of 1.0. Projected to earn $5.5 million in 2023. Thinking a trade centered around Gomez + Woodford for Barlow.

If we dump VerHagen’s contract, this increases payroll by about $2 million.

Contract year, PDJ is going to hit .250 and 25 HRs…. If anyone can find a site the compares “years left” vs “contract up” stats I’d love to see that.

But they still need a true ace/game 1 starter.

Outside of Rodon, don’t see that happening, the only other Free Agent starting pitcher that might move the needle is Eovaldi who I have not seen a lot of but has OK #’s, not sure what the money would be on him, maybe a Stripling type deal.

As for trade targets I think you would be looking at Pablo Lopez of the Marlins who need hitting, they might also want to trade Trevor Rogers who was awful last year and is left handed which would give the Cardinals 3 lefty’s in the rotation which is unlikely.

Bieber I think you would have to blow Cleveland away to get him.

A couple of outside the box trades might be Alex Cobb of the Giants or Merrill Kelly of the Dbacks….both are mid 30’s with at least 2 years left on their deals and both under 10 million a year.

The Giants need hitting as bad as the Marlins do and the Dbacks need any young talent

From CBS Sports…The Astros and Diamondbacks have discussed a potential Daulton Varsho trade, reports USA Today, though no deal is imminent. The D-Backs are overloaded with MLB-ready or near-MLB-ready left-handed hitting outfielders and figure to move one or two this offseason to address needs elsewhere on their roster, specifically pitching and a righty bat on the left side of the infield.

Varsho is a unique player who can catch and also play center field, two positions of need for Houston. He also swatted 27 home runs in 2022, and a guy who can provide that much offense while playing two up the middle positions (as well as right field) is incredibly valuable. Arizona has reportedly set a high asking price for Varsho, who is only 26 and will remain under team control through 2026, and understandably so.

    Any interest?

I see the Giants signed Correa for 13 years and $350 million. Word is that Correa will slide over whilst Crawford plays his final season with the Giants. Crawford is 35 and 2023 is his last year on his contract.

Another deal that will one day be regrettable.

Most if not all long-term deal will be regrettable some sooner than others. That’s the business model in place. Teams know there is very little chance almost no chance the player will be productive for 10 let alone 13 years. Most teams with tons of resources don’t care as much if the player in question gets them a title maybe hope for two. Roll the dice after all is only money.

How about getting Sixto Sanchez for Gomez and Paniaugua? TheMarlins get a big bat and a potential starter. The Cards get a high upside starter. As long as Sanchez stays healthy, he should be a number 3 or 4 starter.

C27, not a bad idea, but I don’t think that gets it done. He was a top 10 prospect in baseball not to long ago, I believe going into either 2020 or 2021. They were just granted a 4th option year on him, so he would have the chance to build back up after missing two whole years which is encouraging.

Yepez and Paniaugua might get it done, but it might take a little more than that even. They need bats in a bad way, so a Yepez and Gomez package might actually be of more interest to them.

Lopez should be the target from Miami.

Trevor Rogers seems like another high upside guy from Miami who could be in play. Then again, he could be a Monty-level arm too.

The clowns on the MLB Network last night proposed a trade between St. Louis and Pittsburgh. It went as follows:

    Pirates get:
    Liberatore
    Carlson
    Burleson

    Cardinals get:
    Reynolds

The more and more I watch the MLB Network the more I begin to realize they don’t have a clue.

Reynolds is a very accomplished player in his prime at 27, and has been for 3 of his 4 years (the usual bad Covid year). Career .842 OPS. He is not a FA until 2026. None of the Cards players have done much if anything and Carlson has very bad peripherals (poor hard hit, exit velos, even in 2021).

I don’t like the fact that Reynolds’ defense in CF is suspect, but other than that, he hits RHP very well (a team weakness), he has very good speed, a good arm, and his Away (.851 OPS) stats were better than his Home (.759).
Lock him in and that knocks out concerns about the OF. Between Walker, TON and Noot, the other two spots will be OK.
He had 24 HRs in 2021 (his 8 triples led the league); 27 HRs in 2022. Put him behind Arenado as a switch-hitting #5 hitter and I’m feeling pretty darn good.

I would do that Reynolds trade in a heartbeat. Our lineup would be devastating with both him and Contreras compared to who they would be replacing from last year.

no way i give up anything like that for Reynolds…definitely no respect for our prospects (even though didnt they rate our farm high?)

Carlson + a fringe or lottery prospect straight up for Reynolds feels like a move i could see happening if Pirates can’t get something better (They can and will)

In general i don’t understand tall the Carlson hate

he had a poor late year but he was obviously still bothered by his injury

they traded Bader because they BELIEVED in Carlson..i don’t think you throw away a talent like him, switch hitter, speed, defense, still young, quiet

will he be the next coming of Pujols or whomever that we planned for when he came up? probably not. But neither is Gorman so far (yet people want to toss him to the curb too)….now we are on to the magic and hopes of Winn and Walker…but after 1 bad year or injury are we going to throw them away too?

When did baseball become about immediate success or trash?

there are gems like Pujols and other crazy stars…but why is everything evaluated towards the outlying example? it’s unfair, and really just mean

i am sure i have be guilty of it at timers, but it doesnt mean i think it is right or good behavior

I would be OK with a trade of Liberatore, Burleson/Carlson and a lesser prospect. I don’t think they should get rid of both Carlson and Burleson, at this time.

Actually, they could trade Yepez, Liberatore and Carlson. Although my gut tells me that Carlson will have a good year this year.
