Nine innings played, four safe hits recorded. Yeah, there were some walks, good eye, good eye. But there were still 27 outs recorded. That’s a .148 BA for the game.

Oops, actually the BA for today’s game was .133. lol. Remember last season? We’d get 10 or 11 hits against a #4 starter. But throw a good arm at us (pun intended) and we get just a few hits. Miles Mikolas should have been a 20 game winner last season. Actual result: 12 wins
There isn’t any good reason to expect we would show well vs the reigning champions who won 106 games last year, even with ST lineups going at it.
Yeah, not only just 12 wins Lou, but 12-13 with a real nice 3.29 ERA in over 200 IP. A Big League pitcher shouldn’t have to shine his hitters cleats to compel them to push a few runs across.

Today’s box score not real exciting, but looked like an all around good game. RBIs by Carlson, Yepez, Kramer Robertson and V. Scott. Wynn struck out 3 times. Verhagen gave up 2 hits, including a homer in an inning and WRod walked a couple. Nice 4-1 win.
Connor Thomas finally had a good spring outing, too.

I don’t want to read a lot into one spring lineup, but Donovan started six games at short last season. With DeJong hurt, they may be getting him ready to back up Edman. Of course, they also have Gorman for second.

It looks like Jack allowed a lot of traffic on the bases, but I didn’t see the game, just his pitching line.
As to the lineup, I notice Walker hasn’t been in RF much or at all lately. It’s not as though there is a pressing reason to see Church in RF or anything like that. I wonder what exactly the reason he played RF a lot early on was. And has whatever they were thinking about a potential OF alignment now changed? I guess we will see what happens when everyone is back, but I am guessing Walker will continue in LF and O’Neill will see significant time in CF. Which raises the question of why Carlson is not getting maximum reps in CF while O’Neill has been gone? Its not hugely important to see Pinder out there. The OF has been full of surprises.
Neither Carlson nor DeJong strike me as guys who think they have to make the team out of camp. Paul might figure he’s out of options and BDW isn’t going to flush the $9M quite yet. I don’t know what Carlson is thinking. If he thinks he’s dinged up he ought to miraculously cure himself pretty quick.
I agree with that mindset, Bling, in the sense that I’d be highly surprised if both of their names aren’t listed on the 26 man on opening day. I don’t at all know who’d be interested, but at this juncture I have to believe that the Cardinals would be willing to take a pretty good hit if it involved a suitor for DeJong absorbing a nominal portion of the blow. Carlson’s probably okay for well into the first month or two of the regular season, but could obviously suffer diminished playing time and possibly be entirly eclipsed by his replacement if he tanks into the mid portion of May. I thought it was silly for the Cardinal bosses to proclaim Dylan as the de jure CF’er after the Bader trade, so maybe the competition will spark a fire.
I am a little dissapointed that the Cardinals have not used the absence of players to the world classic to give some of their top prospects more exposure. Instead we are getting a steady diet of Mo’s Misfits (Players who have never been good and players who may have been pretty good once but coming off a bad year.) And very unlikely to do better with the Cardinals.
What would be wrong with Graceffo or McGreevry stretching out with multiple innings in a game. But we are getting Packy Naughton and VerHagen on a regular basis.
How can anyone not like Packy? I mean, he’s 0-6 with an ERA well north of 5.00 for his career in a little shy of 55 innings of work, so you can be reasonably certain you’ll see an additional 75 to 100 IP’ed out of Packy before the Redbirds cut bait…VerHagen’s the type of bargain the Cardinals like because they can shut him down due to a sudden malady anytime he gets blistered and only have to pay him about $5M ’til the end of ’23.
Verhagen has some history of looking good in AAA and looked sort of ok for the Canned Hams, more so in 2020 than 2021. Packy has been sort of useful filling in around the edges when guys can’t answer the bell. I wonder if the idea is we will keep one or the other.
Packy and VerHagen are on the bubble for making the team. Graceffo and McGreevy are not. IMO, the prospects are better served by getting into a full starters routine, which is available to them now that minor league games have started. We are down to the last two weeks of camp and the WBC will be over in four days, so it is time to focus on getting everyone ready for Opening Day.

Anyone following the minor league spring training games today? They open against the Miami affiliates.
Just want to say that I still love the banned shift. The game this year is being played the way it is supposed to be played, IMHO. It is back to being much more like the game I grew up watching. It’s so much more enjoyable now. Batting averages are going to be a lot more meaningful again. I couldn’t even count how many balls went through the infield that would have been caught by having the whole infield on one side, or the other side, of 2B. This has been happening all spring.
