December 6, 2022 at 8:13 pm #208293Sounds like the prices are higher than what Mo was hoping for…
A day after believing his #STLCards could leave the #WinterMeetings with the catcher they covet & need, team president John Mozeliak walked that sentiment back on Tuesday. Clearly, the trade & free-agent markets are very fluid with various ebbs and flows. Mo's response … (1/2)

December 6, 2022 at 8:15 pm #208294“Cubs to sign Cody Bellinger”
Shux, I was hoping he’d end up in St. Louis. I trust my instincts. I believe he would have done quite well between Goldschmidt and Arenado.

December 6, 2022 at 8:34 pm #208298Cardinals crying poor a tradition like no other at winter meetings….might want to get Quintana and Vasquez on speed dial if they are going with the prices are to high song and dance again this year.
Taijuan Walker to Phillies for 4 years $72 mill
December 6, 2022 at 8:53 pm #208300LA, I think you are right. Mo is getting sticker shock on these catchers and we may end up with Vazquez or Barnhart.
December 6, 2022 at 10:23 pm #208309MLBTR is reporting the Cardinals offered Contreras 3 years. I honestly did not expect them to be in on him. I guess the asking price for Murphy is outrageous.
December 7, 2022 at 4:48 am #208311we may end up with Vazquez or Barnhart.
We may end up with Knizner and Herrera.
December 7, 2022 at 8:11 am #2083152023-25 are the years for the Cardinals to make some noise this cycle.
I hope they open up the checkbook and at least try to get the pieces needed to really challenge for another title. A nice core is on place but Goldschmidt and Arenado are aging.
There are no guarantees because injuries and underperformances happen but I’d like to see a lot more than they’ve done recently….

If they are serious about Contreras they will need to offer four or five years. Thinking that the best catcher on the free agent market would accept three years seems naive.
December 7, 2022 at 8:49 am #208319Jameson Taillon has agreed to a 4-year, $68 million deal with the #Cubs, sources confirm @JeffPassan and @JesseRogersESPN report. @MLBNetwork

December 7, 2022 at 9:01 am #208322I’m shocked that the Cards are linked to Contreras….. I’ve never noticed his catching being that awful? Is it?

ParticipantBob Reed:
And who knows, maybe Ivan Herrera will surprise us! Believe it or not, the Steamer projection model says he’s already a 3-WAR guy per 600 PAs, so perhaps we are all underestimating him.
I don’t think he is underestimated here… Community’s #6 and that’s ahead of some really good talent. When he reaches his potential he’ll be a MLBer. However, if the rumors about Conteras coming here are true it will throw up a roadblock for Ivan unless he is seen as a backup C/PH.

jj-cf-stlParticipantQ to the NYM while Mo explores options on catching. 2/26mil, very reasonable.
December 7, 2022 at 10:16 am #2083302/26 by NYM for Jose Quintana is very reasonable. Wonder if we even made an offer??
December 7, 2022 at 10:18 am #208331Cardinals close to deal with Contreras
December 7, 2022 at 10:51 am #208334I think they should have brought Quintana back, he was their best pitcher the last part of the year and that deal was reasonable, but assuming Matz is in the Rotation 3 lefthanders starting might be an issue…so I wonder if they would be more interested in a Righthanded starter like Basset or similar.
Though I have seen little evidence that they think they need another starter, which will be a mistake again
December 7, 2022 at 11:09 am #208335Contreras would be an excellent signing…not having to give up talented players.
December 7, 2022 at 11:16 am #208336The Cardinals and Willson Contreras continue to talk. No deal is done, but John Mozeliak said there is “momentum and optimism” at the moment.

Yes, our starting lineups and depth chart will be very good.
December 7, 2022 at 11:18 am #208338Contreras would be an excellent signing…not having to give up talented players.
I agree. Let’s sign Contreras and keep our prospects. Hopefully there would still be enough money to get a pitcher but Contreras will probably get at least $20M/year.
December 7, 2022 at 11:23 am #208339Although Quintana featured outstanding work during his ’22 second half stint with the Cardinals, it was a given that the Redbirds weren’t going to make any attempt to sign him up. What I’m driving at, is they’ve already committed to Matz to the tune of 4 years at 44MM. Anyone paying attention knows that Matz and Montgomery are slated to be two components of the 5 man in ’23 and the presense of 3 LHP’s in a rotation is practically unheard of.
