Participant“I like Thompson and Woody both. The question is what kind of opportunities will they get this year. Staying healthy is an important attribute.”
Perhaps Verhagen goes on the long term DL with hurt feelings and this is a moot point….

ParticipantMcFarland signed by NYM so that discussion ends,
January 4, 2023 at 5:13 pm #210484Was Verhagen a starter for the Canned Hams? I read somewhere that he was being looked at as a rotation candidate last spring, but I don’t remember that.

ParticipantI remember them calling Verhagen rotation depth. I kind of felt like they were giving a whole lot of faith in guys with average stuff that performed below average in previous trials. Why would you expect above average results unless you think the law of averages would bring them to average eventually? Haha. I’m glad they have a different plan this year. Let’s see if above average strikeout rates and stuff lead to any above average or average results…if they can find the strike zone….
January 5, 2023 at 6:46 pm #210516This guy covers the Yankees. Yankees hired Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean as front office consultants. My take is they are bringing in some old cigar chompers to explain how baseball works to the analytics staff and their mothers.

Both Minaya and Sabean are known for their scouting and talent evaluation abilities. Both executives will now be added to the other voices in the Yankees’ decision room. Important to mix analytics info and scouting info.
10:22 AM · Jan 5, 2023January 5, 2023 at 7:12 pm #210519Then what do you consider Brian Cashman to be? He has been in charge of NYY’s baseball operations for 25 years. Reminds me more of the old cronyism where fired GMs get hired by their buddies… I wish I could get a consulting job to offer opinions, but have no responsibility…
January 6, 2023 at 5:03 am #210527Cashman is an old timer apparently sensible enough to keep it from getting out of hand. Chris Young is an example of a young GM who might be equally sensible. And then there are the Billy Bean wannabe bandwagon riders.
January 6, 2023 at 9:16 am #210531Cashman has a long tenure of success with the Yankees but he might be feeling a little heat since they haven’t won a world series since 2009. The philosophy of “have a winning record each year and get in the playoffs and hope for the best” might work in some places but is probably a tough sell in New York.

Just thought I would post this.

January 6, 2023 at 11:29 pm #210562Bauer is now available. I have no idea if a team that signs him just pays minimum since his contract runs through 2023, or if events have affected that. Presumably he will be looking to sign beyond 2023.
January 7, 2023 at 12:22 pm #210581If a team signs Bauer for 2023 they will only have to pay the league minimum. The Dodgers have to pay the rest. I don’t think there is any chance he gets a chance a long term deal. He will be fortunate to get anyone to sign him since he is so toxic but there might be some team out there willing to do it.
January 7, 2023 at 12:56 pm #210584Somebody like Miami wouldn’t have anything to lose.
January 7, 2023 at 2:18 pm #210593Somebody like Miami wouldn’t have anything to lose.
That is possible. Teams like Miami, Tampa, and Oakland would normally not be able to afford a player like Bauer so they might give it a shot. They also don’t have to worry about offending their fanbase since they usually draw less than 10k fans per night anyway.
The Cubs might be another team to watch. They like to bring in players that are being paid by someone else. They just did it with Hosmer. Of course they also DFA’d Heyward, whom ironically the Dodgers picked up. That would be a pretty good trade for the Cubs talent wise. Not so much PR wise though.

ParticipantI would love to have him. Cut him if he sucks or there’s a chemistry thing. He’s probably quite humbled by the situation.

The words Bauer and humbled have probably never been used before. I guess there is a first time for everything though.
January 7, 2023 at 4:16 pm #210599Humbled by the situation? I wouldn’t want him on the team. He is a toxic person with a lot of baggage. No thanks.

jj-cf-stlParticipantFrom a Nov. interview on mlb network radio, Mo said:
“Clearly, with Yadi retiring, we know we need to upgrade at catching, especially when you think about the day-to-day demands of that role.” – Mo
So he later checked that box by acquiring Contreras, a RHB, which gives another statement in that interview, added weight.
“When you look at our offense, trying to find something from the left side to try to help bolster our day-to-day lineup is something we think we could benefit from.” -Mo
“When you think about our club from the left side, we could just use a little extra pop. Some of our better hitters are right-handed, and so we’re just looking for more balance in our lineup.” – Mo
He also mentioned the Cardinals would “keep the pulse” of the SP market this offseason – Mlbtr
January 8, 2023 at 9:35 am #210623from the left side, we could just use a little extra pop
Yeah, I think that was supposed to be Gorman, and Carlson until he hit the bigs and couldn’t hit RHP any more. I wish Burleson would get an extended run of daily play to see if he could be the LH pop. I’m not sure how that would happen or how I would want it to happen, but I hope it does. We could play O’Neill until he injures something, but why? I don’t see a future in that. Too bad he isn’t 6’6″.

He was released by the Dodgers after they had a meeting with him and he expressed no remorse.
January 8, 2023 at 5:22 pm #210637I’d rather lose 162 straight than have that Bauer scumbag
January 8, 2023 at 7:30 pm #210645I would take Bauer the pitcher, but unfortunately he comes with Bauer the human being. Pass…

He also maintains that he is completely innocent of the charges and the prosecutors dropped all charges. The Dodgers didn’t really back him up on anything either (not that they had to) so I can see where he would be rather be done with them and get to choose his landing spot.

It’s a sensitive subject and I can see why people would just want to back off. But, to me, it seems like what he did was consensual, if it occurred at all, and since he wasn’t directly charged, I think he’s already been punished appropriately. It’s definitely a lot different than being in an argument or whatever.
He is a weirdo, but also seemed to be set up, with the women either coming back again and again, posting videos sleeping next to him, messaging friends with things like “got my hooks in him”….all of this AFTER he supposedly beat them.
I’ve never thought of baseball players as role models so I don’t have a lot of feelings toward this stuff. The US has laws in place and a workplace shouldn’t have some additional arbitrary morality rules for players, over and above the laws of the US.
January 9, 2023 at 1:26 pm #210675Us in the public will probably never truly know what all happened and didn’t happen but ask yourself this: would you willingly pay someone $22M to go work for someone else and compete against you? Even for the mighty Dodgers that is a fairly big chunk of change to eat and I doubt they would do it unless they truly felt compelled to do so.
