Although I didn’t perform any backflips, I was 2 for 4 on that quartet. I knew that Lester was Jon Lester and I had a hunch that Quintana would receive an octane boost after being ransomed from Pittsburgh to a team that was in contention to showcase his ability in the second half prior to the end of his contract. I hadn’t ever seen Montgomery, so I had no idea and I only rememberd Happ when he worked as an Astro, so I shrugged and thought, we’ll see.

    Nathan said:

I see they signed Gamboa. Winn, you’re on the clock…I wouldn’t buy a home in St. Louis if I were you. It’s what I thought; Gorman, Libertore, Woodford and Winn for Lindor.

Lindor shmindor, with the BJs coming to town for opening day, we will get to see a real shortstop. Bichette would be the guy to trade the farm for. (We chose Delvin Perez ahead of him.).

… and those numbers collectively have the team finishing 81-81… That seems a lowball projection.

Hey BW (and others who commented), sorry to just be able to respond to this. If you read their methodology, this isn’t a measure of a team’s projected record, but rather the record if you took away the offense and defense and simply looked at mano a mano pitching matchups. I should have clarified that, I suppose.

Thus, the Cards have a rather pedestrian staff, which we are all aware of. In the writeup, they mention that the other factors will likely mean the Cards finish over .500, perhaps well over .500.

We don’t know how pedestrian the staff is until it plays out.

The staff was pedestrian last year and they’re all a year older. Thus, it’s pretty likely they’ll be pedestrian again. Considering the defense, they won’t be bad. But we’ll likely get boat raced in the first round of the playoffs again. Rinse and repeat.

There were injuries last season. We don’t know how pedestrian the staff is until it plays out over the first few months of the season this year.

According to ZiPS, in terms of total talent — position players plus pitchers — there are 8 MLB teams distinctly stronger than the rest right now. Those 8 teams are the Cards, Braves, Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Astros, Blue Jays, and Padres. (The Phillies and Brewers are 3 and 4 games behind the aforementioned octet, respectively.) If replacement level is 48 wins, the Braves are projected at 103 victories, the Dodgers, Cards, and Yankees at 97, the Mets and Stros at 96, the Friars 95, and Toronto at 94.0

Let’s just see how accurate Zips is in October. This for bettors playing the over/under.

I predict the actual over/unders set by the odds makers will be more conservative across the board than these win totals.

I agree the odds makers will come in with lower win totals. An interesting exercise would be to determine how many WAR each of those top teams would lose if their best starter went down early and was replaced by whoever their 6th starter is. For example, if Mikolas is our best starter (I didn’t check), he is projected (Fangraphs) at about 2.0 war. Liberatore (lets say he is our 6th) is projected at about 0.5 WAR, so we would be down 1.5. That seems like a very small drop off.

That article on Gorman may indicate his tendency to apply too much uppercut to his rips are a result of the proclaimed Redbird hitting approach that emphasizes elevating the baseball. He certainly generates more than enough power to bag plenty of taters without focusing on hitting the ball in the air. Maybe with the latest ’23 coaching staff edition, he’ll be encouraged to focus on a flat and even swing through the hitting zone.

Gorman = play him. If he struggles, play him. If he has hot and cold streaks, play him. Plant him at 2B and play him.

He will have to out play a utility guy. We will see if he can do it.

Why not play Gorman at DH? The Redbirds will face plenty of RHP’ing. Unless Donovan suffers from the proverbial sophmore jinx, which I don’t believe he will, doesn’t a guy who reaches base 4 out of 10 times need to collect at least 500 PA’s? And that’s not taking into consideration that although it’s kind of a gimmick type GG, he was awarded one.

Fangraphs gives the Cards a better chance to win the WS than the Dodgers. Some like these forecasts. I like to see how the season plays out. There will be teams that underachieve and some will overachieve. The trick is to check your magic 8 ball. Ya know the one that you bring with you to the racetrack. Happy wagering and the best of luck.

Gorman can’t be the utility guy at DH, Donovan can.

Gorman is a potential superstar. He was our number one prospect for multiple reasons. You play him everyday this season.

I like making sure Gorman gets plenty of chances to prove what he can do. I think we have a good clue what Donovan brings to the table and he’ll be able to plug in anywhere, anyway. Gorman’s potential is sky high and the lineup surely needs the lefty pop.

I think that says as much about the Dodgers as it does the Cardinals. The Dodgers have had a pretty abysmal offseason by losing several players from last year, replacing them with unproven rookies or over the hill veterans, then the icing on the cake being hit with the dead money of Bauer’s debacle of a contract.

Would like to see both Gorman and Burleson in the lineup against RHP.

I’d guess that it’s unlikely to see both of them in there unless the Nootz routinely struggles, bc. However, I’d like to see Gorman at DH vs. RHP’ing beginning with the opener and continuing until he proves over the course of 75 to 100 PA’s that he’s continuing to have trouble placing it into play. I didn’t see enough of Burleson in ’22 to pass any sort of judgement and I’m reasonbaly certain that’s the case with the Redbird field manager, so I’d say he’ll get quite a few looks in ST’ing.

Gorman at 2B and Burly at DH against RHP.

Montas looks done for the year for the Yankees, never seems to have recovered from that shoulder injury a month before last years trade deadline when he was with the A’s

deGrom has some injury in his first workout with the Rangers, they are saying its no big deal, but with his injury history and age they might be a little worried especially since they owe him $185 million over the next 5 years

One would hope these teams bought insurance, but they are not always put in place due to high premiums. Pay one way or the other…

Yeah maybe, bc. I’m not sure if it was on here, but I seem to recall someone mentioning Gorman as a defensive liability at 2B and I don’t recall him being at all bad last year with the glove at 2B, do you? At any rate, I’d like to see Donovan with at least 450 to 500 PA’s this season and I’d like to see an IF set revolving clockwise with Nado, Eddie, Donnie and Goldy. I’m less nervous when I see the baseball hit on the ground and there’s four familiar faces on the IF…Haha!
