Well, I’ve seen enough. If we lose this game, I hope Nado continues to sit, DeJong is the everyday SS, and Goldy and Contreras are entrenched in the respective 2 and cleanup slots. I know when I’m a beaten man…

Giants are mere pretenders in the battle of series opening losers.

This team is terrible! Management is about to get what they paid for, or didn’t pay for and hopefully fans will stay away in droves and changes will be made!

Correctamundo, Steve. You get what you don’t pay for.

And as Yogi said, if the fans don’t want to go to the games, you can’t stop them.

Perhaps what we should do henceforth is forfeit the first game of every series and give these poor exhausted players a day off every three or four days.

Note that Burleson’s OBP is down to .304, same as O’Neill’s. That is why we are seeing somebody else in the 2 hole.

My three pitchers are Gibson, Carlton, and the guy who outpitched them both in 1967, Dick Hughes.

As to the game, I am glad I went to bed.

Thank you, Larry 24! Some will defend the front office but we have low dollared ourselves into a rough spot! Yes it’s early and you hope we get better but with the current pitching staff I just don’t see it happening! Last place in what many feel is the worst division in baseball is not what I hoped for. What scares me is next year! If you think pitching is bad now just wait! Unless the policy changes and we go out and buy a 1 and 2 but I won’t hold my breath!

    Steve60:

Wishful thinking. The fans will not stay away even in small numbers and there will be no
significant changes. Junior has what he wants and he’s not going to add fifty million to the payroll because he doesn’t have to…the fans will keep coming in droves and he knows it. The best franchise in baseball to own.

I found a metric that looks at player compensation as a percentage of revenue, which is a good indicator of a team’s willingness to shell out money for on field talent.

Unfortunately it was in graphic form and kind of a mess, rather than a nice easy to read table. The Cardinal were at about .46 – ie 46% of revenues go to player compensation. From what I could tell that is about middle of the pack. The Athletics were at the bottom at .20, and the Mets at the top at .81.

I don’t consider the Cardinals “cheap” in terms of player payroll, but they are not overly “speedy” either.

Obviously just looking at player cost does not take in to account other obligations, like debt service commitments.

I mentioned on today’s game thread, the current club is more of a product of poor talent evaluation than not spending enough, in my opinion. For the last few years we are looking at a short term drive to be in the post season, giving away more value than we have received and retained.

I think our spending is reasonable enough to contend, but we have made too many mistakes in allocating that pool of cash.
