I would have loved to see Wainwright come in and get the last two outs in the 5th inning.

It seems that pitching is almost as much mental as it is physical. Liberatore gets knocked around most of the season and then pitches a masterpiece against the team that traded him away. Go figure.

at a certain point a professional athlete knows he is no longer capable of performing at a high level and retiring is far preferable to continuously embarrassing himself in front of thousands of people. Bob Gibson had too much integrity to continue once he realized he no longer was able to live up to his own high standards.

Imagine a leadoff hitter who plays in most of his team’s games and has about 600 at bats for the year. He never has more than one hit per game, usually going one for five, and ends the year with a BA just over .200 with no HR, a few doubles and 28 RBI’s. The Cardinals and Marlins have had preliminary trade discussions involving right-hander Pablo López, reports The Athletic. Miami is said to want young position players in return. Assuming Lars Nootbaar is off-limits, St. Louis has infielder Nolan Gorman, catcher Iván Herrera, and outfielders Alec Burleson, Dylan Carlson, and Tyler O’Neill to offer. López is an obvious trade candidate.

From CBS Sports…The Astros and Diamondbacks have discussed a potential Daulton Varsho trade, reports USA Today, though no deal is imminent. The D-Backs are overloaded with MLB-ready or near-MLB-ready left-handed hitting outfielders and figure to move one or two this offseason to address needs elsewhere on their roster, specifically pitching and a righty bat on the left side of the infield.
Varsho is a unique player who can catch and also play center field, two positions of need for Houston. He also swatted 27 home runs in 2022, and a guy who can provide that much offense while playing two up the middle positions (as well as right field) is incredibly valuable. Arizona has reportedly set a high asking price for Varsho, who is only 26 and will remain under team control through 2026, and understandably so.

The Cardinals also have the ability to offer a package that includes some combination of Jordan Walker, Masyn Winn, Dylan Carlson, and Tyler O’Neill, among others. Additionally, they’ll have Goldschmidt’s contract coming off the books after the 2024 season … or right when Soto’s extension would crank up to cover his free-agent years. It’s possible Soto would prefer to play on a coast, but shy of that, Mike Rizzo should direct one of his first phone calls about Soto to the Cardinals.
