Yes that career .732 OPS predicts that.

Look up career OPS for Willie McGee, Ozzie Smith and Tommy Herr and then get back to me…OPS doesn’t calculate numerous factors that contribute to runs scored and overall offensive areas that win ballgames. Like I mentioned earlier…Runs are still nominally important in the game of baseball.

My mistake you guys know better. The .732 will translate into him hitting better than all of them.

Except of course, Goldy, Nado and TO if the latter of the three can keep his tie rod ends intact…

Now, look up career OPS for guys like Larry Bowa, Davey Lopes and Don Kessinger. Then look at runs scored and how many times their names were mentioned in the MVP voting. You should get a reasonably good idea of how important these types of players were to the overall offensive run production of some pretty good ballclubs.

Just think about how nice it’d be to be Aaron Judge. If he’s careful with his money, at the end of his nine year deal, there’s the genuine possibility he could have saved up enough money to buy three F-15 fighter jets painted up with some really cool looking custom fighter jet livery and have some money left over for fuel…

Random though, not as the final offseason move, but a potential steal, Sean Manaea might be a great “buy low” candidate.

Yes, I just looked at his numbers last year and they are not impressive, which is why he might come cheap. A 1 year deal with an option year could work well for both parties.

Manaea is similar to Q last year in that he can be counted on to go 5+ every 5 days all season and almost always give you a chance. A couple guys like that filling out the rotation makes all the difference. You need a couple guys to go longer filling out the front end, but you also need the work-a-day types. The last couple years we have started the season with much of the rotation made up of guys who might get it done or might not and it looks to be the same again this year. The mindset seems to be if we have enough of them it will work. Very much reminiscent of when we let Lance Lynn walk. I could see Mo having to trade for Q at the deadline again, or somebody like him or Manaea.

For those who prefer runs scored as the be all, end all metric, just use RC/G, where Edman finished 6th on last seasons roster.

I feel like people are parsing this out too much. The point was that Edman might be the lowest quality bat in our lineup, and as a pretty much average hitter for his career, that’s a darned nice thing to say about your lineup. I agree with the sentiment of the person who initially posted it, while also agreeing with those who say that Edman will still be one of the most valuable position players on the team, thanks to his base running and defense.

Concerning Manaea, he has pitched in the post season 3 times and amassed an 0 -3 record with an Era over 15.

They really need to keep this guy, he has gotten better every year.

The offseason just started, and the Cardinals have said they are now pivoting towards pitching. The Goold article quoted Mozeliak as saying “we see what you see.”

Yes, that was the point, but people want to be offended by it.

I am not offended by it…I just don’t agree with it.

For whatever reason, Jake Woodford seems to always get plenty of mention not only on here, but also on other Redbird websites. My own view is that he featured some nice work in ’22, but prior to last season, I was nowhere near sold on his ability to record outs in the Big Leagues. In his first two Big League seasons, he worked 88.2 IP’ed in which he was touched up for 14 taters. That’s no good if a pitcher hopes to keep his name on a Big League roster. However, in ’22 he put together 48.1 IP’ed worth of work and only allowed 1 HR. That’s real good and it’s my view that it’s the primary reason for his success. The BB’s were also down quite a bit in ’22 and that always helps.

No one is saying he is a bad hitter at all. He just doesn’t find other ways to get on base. He doesn’t walk he doesn’t get hit by pitches. Kind of like Bader, he can run like the wind and do great things if he hits the ball. Just really low OBP. I think that limits you to the bottom of the lineup on a team where Ideally your leadoff and #2 guy can get on base .350-.400 in front of Goldschmidt and Arenado. That’s what made Carp valuable when he hit well. Always high on on base percentage.

slidinlefty…Eddie’s one of my favorite Redbirds to come along in a while, but you’re right, he could use a bit more plate discipline. I still think he’s the best guy to lead-off, but if he could draw a few more BB’s there’d be no question as to who should lead-off a Cardinal game.

Kershaw is known for unreliability in post season. It’s a thing with some guys.

If we can trade Edman we could end this discussion that frankly has run its course.

You better hope we do NOT trade Edman.

True story…I once saw a comment that claimed high RBI totals were “overrated.”

They are. What does having RBI in blowout games mean? Nothing that’s what. Padding stats
