Well Rom now has a 14.73 ERA…he should fit in quite nicely with our starting staff.

He’s totally against anything like heavy lifting for players during the season.
O’Neil, Gorman, and Liberatore seem to have had issues caused by weight room sessions.

Not every problem is worthy of blame being placed on someone or something.

Whether it was supervised or unsupervised was not specified. If I had to guess it was supervised but again, no idea.
Now Liberatore is on the 15-day DL I see……
Maybe we limit or eliminate lifting during the season? You can ride a stationary bike for legs / warmups, proper stretching, maybe some light lifting with higher reps if you just gotta…..
If you know what deadlifting is – your form better be good or it doesn’t take much weight to tweak your back. Speaking from experience on this one – I used to spend quite a but of time in the gym with personal trainers.

August 22, 2023 at 9:07 pm #232291Ruth threw 300+ innings twice. One year had 35 complete games. Never saw a weight room or a protein shake. No biomechanics wonks. Men were indeed men.
August 22, 2023 at 9:20 pm #232294I’m not entirely against a weight training program, but injuries aside, I’ve always felt that lifting weights as a form of training was a bad idea for a baseball player. In my view, any advantage the player may or may not gain or benefit from adding extra strength or bulk is offset by the disadvantage of not only the possible loss of quickness and coordination, but also a loss of time that could be spent on repetitive physical activities that are directly related to the game. In my view, stretching, calisthenics and simple running coupled with repetitve reps related to the game itself are the best way to improve the performance of a talented baseball player.

August 22, 2023 at 10:28 pm #232303Plain and simple, Rom lives up and near the center of the strike zone for the most part, although he does brush the corners once and awhile. Also, his pitches have little movement. However, I’m happy that this kid is having his chance to play at the major league level. After all, there are so many kids that never do.

I think John Kruk also thought this was a sound approach.
August 23, 2023 at 5:16 am #232306My late grandfather was born in 1892 and grew up in the NY area. He saw Ruth play countless times. He used to explain that all the news reel film of Ruth is from the later part of his long career, after a lot of years of fast, hard living. He said that earier, and for many years, Ruth was among the best athletes in the game, and he stood out as such, a man among boys. In my high school days there were kids like that. Just gifted athletically. They could do everything and do it well. Those were not the kids hanging out in the weight room, and in those days nobody pushed them to hang out in the weight room. Just because it improves certain things that can be measured doesn’t necessarily mean it is the way to go. It may give you an edge in some ways that are measured, but may be a negative in other ways that aren’t. It seems like O’Neill might be an example. He packs a lot of add on muscle that his frame wouldn’t naturally carry. He can really rip a homer when he’s healthy enough to be out there. But I have to wonder if he would have had a better overall career if he’d have gone with a body composition closer to what nature provided him with, and worked with that.
August 23, 2023 at 5:30 am #232307Speaking of O’Neill, Mo was interviewed on KSDK shortly before Winn was called up, and O’Neall was mentioned. Mo talked about guys like Goldy and NA being able to go “pole to pole”, meaning 162. Being able to take the field and perform when less than 100% physically. He said O’Neill has only been able to do that one time, and needs to be able to do it. My take, reading between the lines, he’s seen enough. Another eyebrow raiser from that interview had to do with Gorman. He was asked about how Edman could fit in going forward, and if everyday CF was a possibility. Mo said maybe, or maybe a move back to second base, with Gorman used at the corners (he said corners plural) and DH. That he would have such a scenario in his mind and would say it out loud was surprising to me.

He needs to lay off the crossword puzzles and stay off the History channel for 6-8 weeks….
