The Dodgers are another that need middle IF help.

The more that I think about it, I’m of the opinion that we need to get back to the pitching and defense model. Yes, it doesn’t hurt if you have a great defender who also hits like Goldy or Arenado and some positions are going to be sunk anyway, but I’d like to trade some of these bats for defense. Here’s my plan to get this team back on track, using a 2024 commitment of $125M to start.

Start by trading bats for pitching. Miami and Seattle look like natural fits. Let’s see…Logan Gilbert is a fine target. Three guys we might consider trading for Logan would be Brendan Donovan, Nolan Gorman or Lars Nootbaar. I think Gorman would be my top choice to trade, although I do love the power bat he has. But I could see Seattle liking the versatility of Donovan more. Maybe Donovan, Luken Baker and a prospect for Gilbert? That gives us one arm.

Next we go to the free agent market for another starter. I love Aaron Nola and would love to see him in Cardinal red. Yet possibly Giolito is more likely. I think he probably goes for 5 years and $135M. That’s a big deal but it’s not unmanageable at $27M per year. So that’s starter #2.

The third…could be a trade. Would Miami be willing to listen on one of their pitchers? I’m not sure. Likewise, the third could be a free agent. Stroman probably goes for 3 years and $60M again. The ground ball stuff is good. The guy I like is Blake Snell. He’s pitched his way into a better deal. Maybe 3 years and $54M? So we have our starter #3.

Next, trade O’Neill who can’t stay healthy. We should be able to grab a relief arm for him. Consider moving on from Knizner, Woodford, Hudson, etc etc. Call up Herrera to be a time share catcher.

Walker needs to get work in LF…if he can’t play there he needs to DH and prep for 1B once we move on from Goldy. Winn plays AAA but probably ends up at SS before the season is up, with Edman at 2B. Gorman is part time 2B but often DH and backing up Arenado at 3B. I wouldn’t be opposed to finding a glove guy for CF if Carlson can’t cut it. Bader is a FA, no? Haha

    C Contreras/Herrera
    1B Goldy
    2B Gorman/Edman
    SS Edman/Winn
    3B Arenado
    LF Walker
    CF Carlson
    RF Nootbaar
DH Whoever is off from the field, plus maybe Burleson

    RHP Gilbert
    RHP Giolito
    LHP Snell
    RHP Mikolas
    LHP Liberatore/LHP Matz

Good stuff stl25. I am all about pitching and defense. That is the name of the game. Yes we will always need bats but you can’t win championships without the first two. Your targets seem mostly realistic. Not at the top of the charts but certainly better than what we have. Bieber would be on the list too although he will be a free agent after 2024.

    Have people proposed Cease?

What would it take to get him?

    He seems a good target

I mentioned Cease a few weeks ago. He would be a good target but I imagine the asking price would be sky high since he has two years of control after this year. The Sox would probably want one of Gorman, Walker, or Winn plus other prospects. Of course the asking price on Bieber would be very high also even though he only has one year of control after this one.

I really like Winn, but given what i have seen from Walker and Gorman i think I could accept moving him for a guy like Cease

I wonder if Herrera would be of interest to them and maybe build off of that?

I know these are guys kind of in the doghouse or actively thrown around but:

    Ivan
    Yepez
    Burly
    ??

Herrera is having a very good year in Memphis. His trade value should be high. I don’t know if there would be much interest in Burleson and Yepez but I would move them if we can. We don’t need anymore DH’s.

Yes, we should trade Burleson, Yepez and Baker.

Let Walker be DH until he learns to play the outfield.

Latest rumor is that Goldschmidt is going to the Angels for a couple of high level prospects. This might be enough to keep Ohtani in Anaheim during the offseason.

    Goldschmidt and Matz
    for
Ky Bush, Sam Bachman, Ben Joyce

    STL shouldn’t.

Why would the Angels want to take on Matz multi-year salary, along with Goldschmidts, with Ohtani’s free agency looming?

Why would STL water down the return for Goldschmidt by including Matz?

Very poorly thought out trade. Mo likely accepts.

I can’t see the Cards being able to off Matz. They would have to give something pretty darn good just to offset the dead money somebody would be taking on. I don’t see it happening. And since the Cards are not going to eat it (see DeJong), we are going to be seeing Matz in some form for a long time. I think he will be touted as among the top 6 or 7 rotation candidates next spring, absurd though it may be. The scary part is Mo will actually believe it and not have a plan B for when Matz self immolates. Other than Liberatore again, I mean.

“Self immolates”…Haha! He can’t get anyone out, but he can heat your home for an entire winter!

This season Matz has an ERA of 5.72 as a starter and 1.98 as a mop up reliever. We might as well just pay him the $12M/year to be the mop up guy. Poor allocation of resources but he can do less damage in that role.

With Trout out for at least a month with a fracture in his hand, do we have something the Angels might want and do they have anything that might help us?

They might be interested in Monty, Flaherty, Carlson, or DeJong but I really don’t know what we would want in return. Their farm system hasn’t been rated very high in years but they might have someone of value.

I would much rather try to sign Monty to a decent deal, he’s been very good and good lefties are hard to come by. Maybe Carlson, DeJong and some reliever for Matt Moore and or Jacob Webb and a decent prospect or two.

That is an interesting one TexasCard. The thing that makes it so is that it amounts to Carlson for three of the Dodgers best pitching prospects.

Montgomery goes too, but we only have him for half a season, so no big deal. We could even take a run at him this winter if we want to. I kind of like it without even knowing anything about the three prospects. I think Carlson would be a trade chip this winter anyway.

I don’t know if the one guy is likely to be rotation ready for next year though. We do need to remember that Mo needs to field a team in 2024.

Dustin May was just announced out for the year. The Dodgers will be on the prowl for pitching help now so they should be ripe for the picking.

No way I would trade Montgomery, good lefties are very hard to come by.

You trade Monty because he isn’t resigning with the Cardinals and you try to maximize the return before its nothing. Additionally, the Cardinals aren’t contending for at least another season or two. They are in desperate need of major reshuffle and roster purge.

HE IS A FREE AGENT AT THE END OF THE YEAR.

If you get more value than a compensatory draft pick for him, you trade him.

That article claims that Montgomery is under team control until 2026, which is not even close to being accurate.

Yeah I saw that about the two years vs one as well, but I don’t think it was too bad of an error. It would still be a good trade fir both sides.

With Montgomery they missed it by two years. He is under team control until 2024 not 2026.

Also, Montgomery would have value for the Cardinals by him declining the qualifying offer and the Cards netting an additional draft pick. As LACardFan said any team trading for Monty would have to offer something better than the draft pick.
