St. Louis Cardinals: B
The Cardinals came in aiming to move their three-walk year relievers, and that’s exactly what they did. Ryan Helsey was shipped off to the Mets for a solid return, Steven Matz fetched an interesting hitting prospect from Boston, and Phil Maton returned a pair of minor-league arms in a deal with Texas. They still have a lineup logjam in place, and that probably should’ve been addressed. The winter, though, may bring clarity on that front after Chaim Bloom takes over as lead decision-maker.the sweep by Arizona is probably a blessing in disguise, now we can be heavy sellers at the deadline and load up for the future. The aging Sonny Gray and the fragile Matthew Liberatore are the only pitchers worth keeping. Walker, Scott and Winn are probably safe and perhaps Herrera, Donovan, Nootbaar and Burleson too.
The Astros are down another starter for the year, namely Ronel Blanco. Maybe Fedde will be worth more now than he was a month ago.
Is anyone concerned that Winn has only 4 hits all spring mostly against pitchers that might not even make MLB rosters. He’s in the process of going hitless again tonight against Memphis. what happens if he has a sophomore season like so many recent promising Cardinal prospects?
Isn’t this the time of year when the Cardinals announce that one of their starting pitchers (Sonny Gray) is going to be shut down and eventually lost for the season.
Gray has been pretty bad over his last 5 starts…28.1 IP, 39 hits, 21 ER’s, 5 BB, 35 K’s
and a dreadful 6.67 ERA. Is he hurting? Any reason why he has fallen off a cliff?Both Glasnow and Pepiot have had trouble staying healthy. Always risky counting on pitchers with an injury history.
From an ESPN article…Pitchers who are good at age 30 don’t seem to be out of the game within two and four years as much as they used to. The staying power of those pitchers has consistently increased throughout baseball history. After that, it’s a little mixed. Perhaps this suggests that modern surgery more often helps those in the first half of their 30s and before, whereas after that they don’t recover quite as well — or simply hang ’em up.
Pitchers born since 1960 do indeed appear to be maintaining their effectiveness better. The percentages of those pitchers as they grow older stay closer to their age 30 performances more often than in the past.7 years in the NL 79 wins 49 losses 3.44 ERA
Last 5 years 54 wins 38 losses. Could be solid and worth a shot for $10 million.
