Scottsdale edged Peoria in Tuesday AFL action. The Cardinal Nation’s #STLCards Player of the Day Victor Scott was on base four times, drove in a run, stole two bags and scored twice. Edwin Nunez and Andre Granillo had a total of three scoreless relief IP. https://t.co/mXbP63bSH4 pic.twitter.com/YHTusjTwcj

stlcard25ParticipantI know that people are usually leery of guys jumping from A ball to the bigs in a year or so, but occasionally it does work out…
Anyway, Edman hit .248/.307/.399 for a 91 OPS+ and his usual good defense. Is there a chance that Scott could play CF well enough and do enough on the base paths to approximate Edman’s value to the team next year? Tommy was a 2.0 WAR player this year, and probably projects a little better next year but I’d rather have a true CFer than depend on an infielder out there, I think.
November 8, 2023 at 8:42 am #236963Scott is interesting. If BillMo isn’t planning on a substantial payroll increase, maybe it will be a surprising winter in other ways. Some sacred cows might end up on the menu.
November 8, 2023 at 9:42 am #236965I’d rather see Victor Scott play nearly the full year at AAA this season that Winn got last year and Walker should have gotten. The tools are all there except he needs more work on the hit tool and AAA will be a good proving ground for that. If he’s ready by August, then move him up.
I’m still all in on seeing Edman playing CF in 2024 and have Winn as the starting SS (with a vet backup SS on the roster just in case). But that means trading both Carlson and O’Neill. I just don’t see a good reason to send Winn back to AAA and if he’s going to be on the roster, then he needs to play nearly every day to improve. And Edman is the best option in CF due to his defense – plus we need him around in case Winn gets hurt or Winn just can’t adjust. Although a part of me is really nervous about trading Carlson. I think we’d be selling ultra low.
November 8, 2023 at 10:28 am #236966I think Carlson will do well somewhere else but not do well staying here

The reason Winn needs to start the year in AAA was that he had a .468 OPS in MLB. Until he can hit, he needs to be in AAA.
November 8, 2023 at 11:54 am #236971Well, the other side of the coin is that Winn’s OPS over 500 plate appearances at Triple-A was .833. The questions include which place is best for his development and what is best for the Cardinals. Those aren’t questions we can answer as they could affect plans for other players, too (ex. Edman in CF).
November 8, 2023 at 12:30 pm #236973I am very excited to see Victor Scott playing center field in the Lou. He has game changing speed.
Also, since Roby and Hjerpe are playing in the AFL, will they get bumped up a level next year? I guess we’ll see in the spring.
November 8, 2023 at 1:34 pm #236974I don’t think Winn would hit .172 over a full season in STL, but he could raise it 50 pts and still stink at the plate. That is the risk if he starts in ML.
November 8, 2023 at 1:41 pm #236975If neither Edman nor Winn is your shortstop, then who is? I suspect the Cards want flexibility in trade or defensive deployment for Edman. If Winn has to improve offensively on the fly, he won’t be the first or last to do it.
November 8, 2023 at 1:49 pm #236976I’m not saying Winn shouldn’t or won’t be the starting SS. For one thing I think they like Edman in CF. But, as was the case with pitchers going into last year, if you are counting on guys to do what they have not done, it can go wrong. There has to be a good plan B.
November 8, 2023 at 1:52 pm #236977We could end up with Palacios in CF for 80 games.
November 8, 2023 at 2:04 pm #236981Ozzie hit .231 in his four years in San Diego including .211 in year two and .222 the year before we acquired him. Herzog couldn’t believe SD was willing to trade him and gladly gave them Templeton and his lifetime .305 average. Winn needs to play in St. Louis.
November 8, 2023 at 2:05 pm #236982I’m a big fan of Tommy Edman and although he did a nice job last season, I don’t think the Cardinals will win anything with him as the everyday CF’er. In my view he belongs at one of the two MI positions, but it probably won’t matter where he or any of the other position players are situated on the field. If the current Cardinal manager is still in place on the top step of the dugout after the first 40 to 50 games of next season I think the W/L record will be worse than at that same point in ’23. No chance with this guy trying to lead the team.
November 8, 2023 at 2:11 pm #236984That’s entirely true, but Ozzie Smith was quite possibly the greatest defensive SS to ever play baseball. So far, Winn looks to have a pretty good mitt and an arm that could compare to Dunston or Furcal. Dunston and Furcal could hit.
November 8, 2023 at 2:20 pm #236985The days of a no hit shortstop are over.
November 8, 2023 at 2:24 pm #2369861TD, even if Ollie is on the top step I still think the team could win as long as Yadi is on the second step. I think hiring Yadi full time may be the most important decision Mo makes all winter.
November 8, 2023 at 3:03 pm #236989The days of prematurely labeling a player based on his first exposure to MLB at age 21 should be over, too.
November 8, 2023 at 4:00 pm #236991The point I meant to be making is, these days, a shortstop who hit .230 for 4 years like Ozzie wouldn.t be around for a fifth year. Especially so with the Cardinals who would be real unlikely to pay arb money to a guy who hadn’t been able to put it together at the dish.

stlcard25ParticipantI like Winn long term at SS, as I think the glove will play for sure. I also think he settles into at least an average player with the bat…a gap to gap type, .270/.350/.400 or so with a lot of doubles and double digit homers. There’s a shot that he runs into a Lindor type career but we can’t really expect it.
Edman has shown us who he is…and it’s a solid player that would make a lot of teams happy, including St Louis, as a utility guy. I’m just not sure he’s going to provide a ton of value in CF. At some point one of the prospects simply has to turn out to be a well above average player or we’ll never be able to spend enough to field a contending team.

I normally would too, but as above, I’m not enamored with Edman in CF and we’ve seen enough guys make the jump that it wouldn’t be entirely insane.
November 9, 2023 at 5:53 am #237003November 9, 2023 at 6:42 am #237009Quick reminder for those who are paid members. My interview with Tekoah Roby is up, joining Victor Scott. Many more from the AFL are coming…
November 9, 2023 at 7:39 am #237012bling, I beg to differ. A plus-plus defender up the middle can hold down an everyday spot in the lineup of a playoff contender even if his BA is low.
Take Kevin Kiermaier. He has four Gold Gloves but here are his batting averages the last six years for Tampa Bay and Toronto.
2018 .217
2019 .228
2020 .217
2021 .259
2022 .228
2023 .265 -
