So Shawn Dunston?
Dunston had a pretty productive 18-year career, however he was a below-average hitter with below-average fielding. Whereas the hope is Masyn Winn is above-average in both respects. Winn put up a slightly better OPS at a younger age at AA than Dunston.
I can see him having more of a Rafael Furcal-like career, who was more of a speed-heavy, walk-heavy hitter with good defense.
The thing that I notice about Winn are his quad muscles.They are chisled, and it leads me to the concept that Winn has been preparing to be a pro athlete for a long time…perhaps his entire life. This is the difference when evaluating a Winn versus a Rivas. Winn has been weight training for years. I think his power is real and developing. When making comps, Barry Larkin comes to mind as a guy whose power came later, getting by with speed and defense plus solid hitting. That late power made him elite.
Winn is a good looking prospect with a lot of ceiling, but it might be smart to keep in mind that Nolan Gorman’s AA BA was 30 pts higher than Winn’s and his OPS was 80 points higher. Gorman had a drop off from AA to AAA and then pretty much flat lined his first go at the bigs. Gorman’s experience illustrates that it is a long way from the Texas League to MLB. Nolan hit .275 in AAA, lets see how close Winn can come to that. The speed of the game will ramp up on him this year too. Let’s see how the D looks once we’re well into the season. The last thing we need is another second baseman.
After a similar number of AA plate appearances as Winn, Edman had a worse batting average and OPS. Half the home runs and about 10 less SBs. I know a few on here would rather have Edman. I think we can give Winn some time. He won’t turn 21 for about 2 months.

The Cardinals and Marlins have had preliminary trade discussions involving right-hander Pablo López, reports The Athletic. Miami is said to want young position players in return. Assuming Lars Nootbaar is off-limits, St. Louis has infielder Nolan Gorman, catcher Iván Herrera, and outfielders Alec Burleson, Dylan Carlson, and Tyler O’Neill to offer. López is an obvious trade candidate.
Reigning NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara is untouchable and the Marlins signed Johnny Cueto earlier this month. Miami’s other starters — López, Edward Cabrera, Jesús Luzardo, Trevor Rogers — are all reportedly available as the club looks to improve an offense that ranked 28th in runs and 24th in home runs in 2022. López is under team control through 2024 and the Cardinals could use a controllable starter because Adam Wainwright will retire after 2023, and Jack Flaherty, Miles Mikolas, and Jordan Montgomery will all become free agents.heating up…
Yeah Lopez would fit right in with our other bum shoulder guys, Flaherty and Hudson. He missed half of 2021 with a rotator cuff strain and before that a month plus in 2019 with a shoulder strain. Relying on these guys is a big part of our rotation melt down problem. Find someone else.
Yeah, it seems like paying money for these pitchers nowadays is not at all unlike being foolish enough to buy a Fiat. A lot of you probably already know that instead of a spare tire, these types of cars all come equipped with a bicycle in the trunk…That should be a strong indication to look at a different brand.
Lopez pitched 180 innings last year, which ranked 15th highest in the NL. Hopefully he is beyond his injury woes but you never know with pitchers. Ask Matz.

So a straight up trade of Nootbaar for Lopez looks to be fair.
