Four of five sounds a lot better than three. We have our best pitcher on the mound, so let’s hope we can push the record to 28 games over .500 by day’s end.

Although Monte seems to receive top billing insofar as the accolades afforded the two LHP’ers added to the rotation at the deadline, he and Quintana’s overall performances as Redbirds are remarkably similar after glancing at W/L records in which each was the pitcher of decision, which is 5-1 and 2-1 respectively. In Quint’s 9 turns, the Cardinals are 8-1, as opposed to 7-1 in Monte’s 8 starts. That’s a 15-2 team W/L record when these guys take their turns in the rotation. That’s silly good. Some other numbers…

It’s obviously been a team effort and practically the entire roster has contributed to the Cardinal’s overall success since early August, but in my view, these two guys have been the primary reason the Redbirds are comfortably situated atop the NLC. Net bottom line is that any team’s success will ultimately hinge on the fate of the starting rotation. Like always…
Some banter yesterday about that Marichal-Spahn duel in 1963 where each guy went 16 innings, and finally Mays won it with a home run.
I mentioned how in 1966 as a kid I saw Tony Cloninger pitch a couple of weeks or so after his two-grand slams game. That ‘63 Marichal-Spahn game is another one that had an impact on me as a kid. On a side note, there is a book devoted solely to that game that is real good.
Anyway, the first big league game I ever saw was in 1963 – Cardinals-Braves at the old Sportsman’s Park Busch Stadium. Warren Spahn’s turn in the rotation was that game, but the Braves held him back due to the long outing in his prior start, that game against the Giants that went 16 innings. A journeyman spot starter named Hank Fischer got the call for Milwaukee. I knew about him as I had his ‘63 Topps card. The aforementioned (in the other thread) recently traded Gene Oliver started in left field for the Braves, but did not hit any homers in this game.
Curt Simmons started for the Redbirds, and practically before we could sit down, my very first live game as a kid, the Cardinals were down 3-0 on a home run by the great Henry Aaron. The cards mounted a late rally in that one but lost 7-5.
Baseball was such a big deal in my young life then that the memories are still vivid.

Much the same for me bikemike. I have only vague memories of Sportsman’s Park but many baseball related memories from the mid 60s. Oddly, I vividly remember a trip we took to NY to see one of the last MLB games played at The Polo Grounds. The Mets played the Giants and Juan Marichal hit a home run. That would have been 1963.

The Brewers just keep on winning. The Yankees aren’t doing us any favors. Sure would be nice if the Yanks could beat the Brewers today and we head west with a 9 game lead. If the worst case scenario happens we would head west with only a 7 game lead. And if that happens, watch out. The sky would be falling.
BikeMike…Nice post and real neat experience! I’m guessing you’re a bit longer in the tooth than myself simply because I only have vague memories of my two and only experiences at Sportsman’s Park. My clear memories and images don’t come entirely into focus until about the ages 8 to 11 at the new Busch Memorial Stadium at a time when I was then playing the game and was a self-proclaimed “expert” on all of the players and the nuances of the game…Haha! I’ll also say that learning to calculate the BA’s of hitters and W/L pct’s and ERA’s of pitchers on the flip side of all those trading cards probably taught me more about arithmetic than any math teacher in elementary school. Very educational! In any event, I don’t feel it’s any coincidence that if they get you at that early age, they really gotcha for life. Thank goodness for that!
I saw the Cardinals play the Dodgers in St Louis in 1957. Don Newcomb started one of the games for the Dodgers.
Bling…Man, you made a visit to the Polo grounds? That’s awesome! All of those old photos of the OF “walls”, the architecture showing all of the plaques anchor-bolted into the mortar joints of the brickwork, the seating arrangements, etc. are not only extremely interesting, but outright amazing! I’ve studied plenty of them for hours and hours through the years along with other old and gone baseball venues. I’ve always thought it was a genuine shame that these types of venues weren’t maintained and preserved. I mean, look at the Colosseum and how many people save up and spend thousands to make a trip to Rome and take a tour of that one…Haha! All jokes aside, I feel that the mindset in the U.S. is changing a bit as witnessed by the maintaining and preservation of both Wrigley and Fenway. It’s about time! What a shame it’d be if they ever razed those two national treasures.
Oh, I forgot to mention…The iconic photos of the #24 on the back of the jersey as he chases down the deep drive to CF at the Polo grounds during the ’54 WS contains countless interesting images. But in my view, one of the best is at the far left in one of the photos. Stencil painted under one of the numerous plaques is a distance marker that reads, 483 ft…HAHA!
Lots of folks today. Never saw a crowd lined up for a game as I saw today. Obviously bobble head and build a bear had something to do with it. But I’ve been here on giveaway days before and not so many lined up early.been a while since I sat in right field. Was in red jacket club but that’s higher up.
I’m ready to see the Red’s go home. 5 games is to many to play in one stretch.
Especially for our bodies and the stress. haha

LeGrand…I know that Gussie wanted to name it after his leading brand of beer, but wasn’t able to do so because Big League execs frowned on the idea. He then named the venue after himself and introduced the Busch Bavarian brand beer. Although my dad was a Falstaff guy, he knew the story and related it to me.

I’m on the end of a aisle, the people right across from me in the next section have had a problem with water from somewhere not rain falling down on their seats. Apparently it’s a known problem. That shouldn’t happen with the cost of tickets, merch, and such.

The joint was actually named Budweiser Park. After a short time the commish raised hell so Gussie had to go with Busch.
It wasn’t long before he had the marketing department producing bull-crap commercials while the bottling company worked at label design.
