Monty thru six … looking really good. Pitch count just under 100. Send him out in the seventh with someone in the pen? Or, call the pen now?
I got a call from a good friend, and Cub fan, after the 1986 Series. He could not believe Buckner had missed that ground ball in game six. I told him that I thought that play had to resolve an outstanding concern he had. That is, it would not have mattered if the Cubs had traded Buckner or Durham. Your first baseman would have missed the ground ball against the Padres in game five of the NL Playoffs.
To add to your list: there is a new Bench Coach (lost Skip to Miami) and a significant number of players participated in WBC (a big distraction IMO).
My bigger concern is who fixes this mess? Do you really want to rely on the people who got us into this jam? My guess it will take a lot more than changes in the roster.
I was concerned that this would be a long series. I am not convinced we leave Texas with a win. The Rangers are a more complete team than the Cardinals. Very disappointing when you consider where the two clubs stood one or two seasons ago.
My gut is telling me this is going to be a long series. I just do not see the Cardinal pitching matching up well against this Ranger line up.
Sounds like MLB will continue to Broadcast Padres games on existing networks. However, they may be offering a service to fans that do not get the existing Networks thru MLB Network. Sounds like a monthly subscription for Padres broadcasts will be available fir purchase at a reasonable price. These broadcasts will not be subject to “black out” rules. If true, this is a huge improvement in access to games for Padres fans.
Now, how do the Cardinals get out of the Bally deal?
Ever the eternal optimist .. I hoping the team has turned the corner, put all this losing behind them and are ready to roll thru the rest if the schedule.
I am still baffled on so many levels. If I were DeWitt I would be asking the Front Office some very pointed questions. How can this happen?
I listened to the Cardinal pregame show yesterday. They interviewed Benji Molina. He believes the primary issue is pitch execution and not pitch calling.
I heard the same “echo” on MLB Radio this morning. Yes, Contreras may not be the best defensive catcher in MLB. However, he has won a lot of games at the ML level. It really feels like he is being used as a scapegoat.
Further, a few of the analysts pointed out that the Cardinals staff does not have a staff full of “swing and miss” guys. Pitch execution becomes even more critical as the margin for error is slimmer with such a staff construct.
Ugh!
I need help here … completely dumbfounded by this move for sure.
Unfortunately, I have been able to watch only a couple of games this season. I have had to listen to the radio broadcast. I have not left these games feeling that the catcher is horrible and that is the primary issue for pitching performances to date. Am I wrong?
Can’t the bench signal in pitches if pitch calling is the issue?
I cannot believe they better off removing Contreras as the every day catcher as planned. Let him play out the season, see if things improve and trade him if they do not. IMO, they have significantly diminished his trade value while turning over the day-to-day duties to two journeymen catchers (at best).
All I can say is wow!
This has turned into a real mess. They got a good start from Montgomery and the bull pen fell apart. Offense needed to add on and just could not do it. Had opportunities … 3 for 13 with RISP. Ollie needs to figure out which arms in the pen are reliable enough to protect leads.
