Oof. Back to treading water. Gotta have this one – 5-6 games back at the end of May isn’t insurmountable but man oh man where are we gonna get some pitching? It all went south all at once…..

I hope everyone realizes how worthless DeJong is. He’s, what, 1 for 23 now? He’s trending right down to his norm. I wouldn’t even consider starting him at SS anymore. Perhaps – PERHAPS – against a lefty but that’s it.

And it totally amazes me that this team simply cannot hit the ball. Why are they so worthless? Is it the hitting coach???

It was nice to see DeJong get some traction when he came back. But it is rare for a guy to not be able to hit for some five years, most of his career in other words, then suddenly figure it out. Had management not given him guaranteed money he would have been a journeyman who would have likely been with 3 or 4 organizations by now.

I was glad to see him get it going for while there, but again, rare to see a guy go from being a poor hitter to suddenly be good. Paul has had enough reps that his career numbers are just what he is. To expect a sudden change is hoping for a long shot.

Yeah, Paulie had some folks buying it. Another guy to be wary of is Babe Ruth Gorman. He’s dropped 25 points off his BA in 8 days. .301 to .276, and struck out 11 times in those 8 games. In other words exactly like we saw last year. Imagine that. He doesn’t have the years of futility that DeJong has, but he doesn’t have any 30 homer season on his resume either.

Yeah, 5 or 6 back in early June is nothing great, but also nothing at all too extreme. The 8 games under bothers me much more in the sense that nothing can be founded and built on until the you’ve reached the .500 plateau. Once you reach .500, you pretty much start from scratch and hopefully demonstrate that you belong in the W column. To me, it’s that simple.

You really don’t like Gorman BB. It sounds sometimes like you want him to fail so you can say…I told you so he sucks.

Its not that I don’t like him, Oliver. It is not that I think he will fail. Having a guy like this pop out of the system is not new. It does not mean he will be a middle of the order fixture. It doesn’t mean much of anything. MLB is not bursting with middle of the order power bats because most of the time they do not pan out. We will have to see what happens.

In my opinion he is wilting under the pressure of having been cemented into the middle of the order, hitting 3rd between two of the great hitters in the game, a pivotal position in the lineup, at age 23, after a grand total of a few weeks of success at the MLB level. Total stupidity, but the computer must have told them to do it. Computers and wonks have no knowledge of intangible factors. If they ruin him forever It would not be surprising.

I agree a 100% with you he shouldn’t be batting third. He is a more typical 5th or 6th hitter.

Maybe we should see if we can revive Tyler Greene’s career and get him a back. He was so valuable. He hit a double once.

The two things they did that might have put Gorman in a funk were moving him from 6 to 3 in the lineup, and having him looking at pitches from lefties now. Baseball common sense would say go back to what you know worked, and start again from there.

I can imagine Ollie coming back down from upstairs and McEwing asks “what did he say about Gorman”, and Ollie says ” he said beep, boop, bleep, bleep and then the screen turned blue”.

Players will always regress to their mean, statistically. For Gorman, that’s likely around .260-.270, if that. Spikes in performance very rarely become a permanent improvement and PDJ is a living example. But with hard work and good coaching, players can improve their BA marginally. Just wish our guys would.

The starting pitching is frightful, the back end of the bullpen is dicey, the offense is now stagnant, and the defense is not what it used to be. Other than that everything is peachy. Thank goodness we are in the NLC where 83 wins might take the division just like 2006.

No question Gorman’s tapered off, but although he’s a very lackluster 3 for his last 19 AB’s, he hasn’t looked terrible during his recent PA’s and has actually made some solid contact during a few of those AB’s in his last few games that have unfortunately not resulted in hits. Additionally, he hasn’t been falling victim to the K at what I’d term an alarming rate at 5 in his last 5 games to go along with 3 BB’s which is encouraging. So, I’d say he hasn’t been too awfully bad during his recent lull and I’ll also add that I agree with some others in the sense that I’ve never been at all pleased to see him placed at 3 in the order. I think 5 would be ideal and it wouldn’t bother me too much to try him at clean-up with Nado following him in the order and Goldy placed in the 3 slot.

I would be interested to know how you come up with that? I don’t think we yet have a mean for his performance vs MLB competition. As of yesterday, in MLB he is at .247 over 506 PAs spread across last year and this, which I do not think establishes a mean, or suggests what it will be. In AAA he did .274 over 516 PAs. Most people do worse in MLB than AAA, but some eventually do better. But I don’t think we have any idea yet at all.

If he can finish out the year around .260-.270, then I would agree with that as a mean to compare future results against. But he could end up .240 or .290 and there is no way to know.

I’d be interested to know how anyone would feel about Goldy, Gorman and Nado at 3, 4 and 5 in the order with the Nootz and Eddie or Donnie in front of those three guys at 1 and 2 respectively?

I’m just throwing this out there but, Adam Dunn was a guy who not too long ago hit .237 for his career and K’d an average of almost 200 times a season and was deemed by many to be liability. Today, teams would be falling all over themselves to have him on their roster. What I’m driving at is that I’m in total agreement that Gorman hasn’t at all displayed the ability to maintain a BA of .260 to .270 at the Big League level and I’m not comparing him to Adam Dunn, but if he can tater up 30 times and push 80 to 85 runs across HP in a season while hitting .235, any team will take him all day long in today’s game.

Totally agree we don’t know yet what Gorman’s steady state BA will be, but based on our limited observations so far, I’d also agree he’s somewhere in the .240-.290 range. I haven’t run any stats, but the standard deviation on his average is pretty high due to the uncertainty. I still think he’ll be in the .260 range over time. Lefty with good power who’s learning to lay off pitches outside the zone. I’m hopeful.

I really like Gorman and think he will be a productive player. He has an outfield bat, but can play second base – that is a great asset.

As others have mentioned and I have opined as well, I do not think he should be in the 3 slot. Goldy should be there. Having Gorman at 4 as 1TD mentioned is a nice way to go R-L-R with the two stars bracketing him. But for now I would have him at 5, and Contreras at 6.

If Dunn had been a Cardinal I would have jumped long ago. He not only struck out a lot, he also walked a lot, leading the league a few times I think. Very respectable career OBP. But he just moved like a slug out there and was terrible in the outfield. Went into slumps like nobody’s business. He answered the bell every day though. And was good for 40 dongs for like 10 -15 years. I agree the all or nothing types are in these days.

Donovan seems to be coming around some. His OBP is getting ‘up in the order’ worthy again. That being the case, I would go back to what worked well in the later part of last year, which was Noot, Donovan, Goldy, NA in the 1-4 slots. Then maybe Gorman, mostly to avoid another righty and because Contreras seems to stink with the stick. I would strongly consider platooning Gorman for a while, so he does not have to be getting looks at lefties until he levels off. Then at some point ease back into that. If someone else could emerge as 5 slot capable, I would put Gorman 6th to have some thumpage down further in the lineup. It might even work with Edman there since he doesn’t strike out much and would be putting it in play there in the 5 slot. Probably what would happen in real life is Contreras and his contract would go 5th even though he is a rally killer right now.

I was the same way, Bling. I can recall watching Dunn when he was a Red and thinking to myself, “I’m glad we don’t have to suffer through this guy.” But now, when I look at his career numbers, and I’m glad you mentioned all those BB’s, I’m thinking, “what was I thinking?” They’ve got me brainwashed…Haha! At any rate, he’d quite possibly command almost as many box tops as a guy like Judge in today’s game and Dunn didn’t retire too awfully long ago.

This Royals team has many promising young offensive players. But their pitching stinks. Was a shame to put up a zero yesterday.

Also heard a stat that our 3-4-5 guys are hitting .130 something in their last 90 at bats. That is flat out terrible. I’m all about a set lineup, but he should have made lineup changes. Just another example of him being an awful manager.

Gorman has had a better May than he did March/April, and with Carlson and O’Neill IL, Gorman % of PA’s vs lefties has increased.

Play him. One week of a .235 BAbip is not struggling. Every player goes thru this.

This was probably from an interview during yesterday’s game but I saw it on the MLB Trade Rumors site.

The Cardinals’s record dropped to 24-32 after today’s loss to the Royals, but unsurprisingly, St. Louis president of baseball operations John Mozeliak isn’t giving up on the season as the calendar approaches June. In an interview with Jim Hayes of Bally Sports (video link) today, Mozeliak said his team is preparing to make additions at the trade deadline, and “I don’t anticipate us [selling] at all. I think…where our division is headed, it’s going to remain very competitive. So really we’re going to be looking at ways that can really help this club.”
