    Never fear, Matz is here!

Sooner or later the breaks have to start going our way. It better be sooner because it’s getting close to being too late.

Look this season is done. We have to face that fact. They are behind too many teams to ever climb over enough of them to make the playoffs.

Now Matz’s contract isn’t the worst one on the books.

An $87M catcher who can’t catch and a $44M pitcher going in this game who can’t pitch. You gotta love it.

Willson Contreras to see more time at DH, outfield for last-place Cardinals, but is the catcher the problem?
The Cardinals’ marquee free-agent addition may be at odds with the team right now

That CBS sports article makes the Cards management look like complete and utter fools, which, of course they are.

“It’s tough, but I’m an employee,” Contreras told reporters.

That from NY Post article dated yesterday.

The story line we’ve heard is that there were conversations over a few days. I’m guessing it was kind of one sided.

Yeah, I read that line on another outlet. A translator could possibly interpret those words of resignation as meaning after less than 40 games into a 5 year contract they’ve lost all faith in my abilities as a key component of a team built to win baseball games, so I’ll simply show up on time, follow my supervisor’s instructions and collect my nice pay envelope. And if that’s indeed the underlying case, I can’t think of a reason for him to take any other approach.

Theo Epstein is just sitting there waiting for the phone call to come salvage another storied baseball franchise.

I have an idea. Why not let the pitchers hit for themselves, and DH for Knizner, lol.

I read that Dayn Perry article. In it Perry interprets Flaherty’s comments as an indictment on Contreras. I don’t know if that is what Flaherty meant or not.

However, if that is indeed what Flaherty meant, then I suggest Jack take a look in the mirror because he sucked when he pitched to Yadi.

I hope Perry misunderstood. I like Jack but he has some responsibility in all this.

That’s all. I am going back to drinking heavily.

The Cardinals will figure out over the next 30 games whether this was really a Contreras issue.

If pitching doesn’t GREATLY improve over the next 30 games, then the entire front office needs to be fired for trying to scapegoat their big offseason acquisition.

    Just to cheer us up:

    Randy Arozarena batting line: .325/.397/.602/.999. OPS+ 182, 9 HR, 30 RBI.

    Adolis Garcia batting line: .244/.307/.479/.786. OPS+ 115, 8 HR, 33 RBI

Here’s one I picked out of the air to look up.

Lane Thomas: .270/.331/.470/.731 OPS+ 106 3 HR, 16 RBI, 17 runs scored. He mostly hits lefties though, not much against righties. Everyday right fielder.

    1. Lars Nootbaar (L) RF
    2. Paul Goldschmidt (R) 1B
    3. Nolan Gorman (L) 2B
    4. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B
    5. Willson Contreras (R) DH
    6. Brendan Donovan (L) LF
    7. Dylan Carlson (S) CF
    8. Tommy Edman (S) SS
    9. Andrew Knizner (R) C

Clear as mud, but I like it.

I like the lineup. Good attempt to maximize bats and gloves. A sign of intelligent life?

It’s good to see Nootbaar hitting so well. I hope he can keep it up, especially against righties.

Knizner is just about an automatic out.

Still don’t like this lineup either.

Din-din today will be a couple of chicken thighs in the air fryer along with some mashed potatoes/gravy, a glass of water or two, and a couple of ice cream drumsticks. Then a cigar or two whilst me and Whitey Herdog sit on the couch watching the Redbirds finally win a game.

That Liberatore for Arazorena trade is really hurting us. Just like the Ozuna for Alcantara/Gallen trade.

I actually like that lineup. I would rather have Donovan in LF than Burleson. Burleson and Yepez should be DH’s only but that door is now closed with Contreras moving to DH.

The good news with the Contreras fiasco is that Donovan doesn’t have to be the emergency catcher anymore. We have that covered.

I just looked at our 10 wins. 7 of them were caught by Contreras, 3 of them caught by Knizner.

So, we are 7-16 with Contreras as catcher and 3-8 with Knizner as catcher. Appears to be a wash.

That’s what I call finding the silver lining. Good job.

I think they need to not worry about getting Burly, Yepez and DeJong ABs right now. Today’s lineup does a good job of getting the bats that have been doing something in there and avoiding a black hole in the defense. This gives us the best chance of winning. If we can pull out of it, the end of bench guys can take a few hacks.

If Donovan and maybe Contreras will be seeing outfield duty, we don’t really need both Burleson and Yepez. When O’Neill returns we won’t need either of them. We could use the end of the bench slot for something more useful. Speed on the basepath maybe, with some sort of other marginal utility. Who do we have in the upper levels that might do that?

As far as speed on the basepath. Mercado leads the Redbirds in SBs. But he’s not on the 40 man. Moises Gomez is. Figures.

In my view today’s line-up will prove to be immaterial. The primary name on the score card or contained in the box score is, and will be, Steven Matz LHP.

Agreed. In fact all three of them should be on the trade block because they really don’t have an avenue for playing time here any longer.
