I’d love to see something like each team having their own app they control and set the price. You want cardianls baseball buy their app, Cardinals get the money, and you get a guaranteed 152 games. MLB Network can broadcast games whenever they want off whatever teams app for “national broadcasts”. Then if MLB network, ESPN, FOX, Peacock, Apple, TBS, whoever want exclusive national broadcasts, with their announcers, they can buy them up say 10 games per team that wouldn’t then be available on the teams app. Then all broadcast rights and income, advertising income, are directly to the team and no more middle man with no blackouts and let people watch.
If MLB wants more revenue out of it or a revenue share program out of it, so certain markets don’t get more of an advantage, then make it a MLB Network app plus a select team. Where you get MLB Network broadcast on the app and whatever team you purchase you get all their broadcasts with it.
But I don’t ever see anything like that happening or working.February 15, 2023 at 3:19 pm #212637One interpretation: He only cares about streaming, not the RSNs coming via cable and satellite. Let the RSNs strangle themselves due to debt and then MLB can own the distribution channels. And when there is no competition, you know what happens to the price to the consumer… https://t.co/hrt7h07mCB

If Bally doesn't pay up, Manfred said, MLB clubs will terminate contracts. MLB would produce games, using MLB Network technology, and would try to arrange for cable and satellite distributors to air them.

March 13, 2023 at 4:53 pm #213988If the NY Post reporting is correct, Sinclair is going to give up broadcasting rights for four money-losing teams, with MLB ready to step in to keep the games viewable. They are the Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks, per this article.
MLB reportedly tried to buy the rights to all 14 teams whose rights Sinclair/Diamond Sports own, but they were turned down.

March 13, 2023 at 5:05 pm #213990I never thought I’d see ‘MLB’ and ‘free’ in the same sentence.
March 13, 2023 at 7:05 pm #213998That part remains to be seen. I am skeptical they would actually give the telecasts away. And even if they did, it would only be until they can negotiate a way to start charging again.
From the article:
“…Manfred will have the league take over the local broadcasts of the money-losing teams and stream them for free in their respective local markets as he negotiates with their cable companies for lower contracts…”
March 13, 2023 at 8:36 pm #213999Does this mean I will NOT be able to see the Reds broadcasts on DirecTV on Bally Sports Ohio? Channel 661?
March 14, 2023 at 7:33 am #214002Potentially, yes, that is what it may mean.

MrperkinsParticipantSo how do I watch while they are free? I tried mlb channel hoping that the games affected would say free game of the day or something but they all say I need subscription to watch.
March 14, 2023 at 12:31 pm #214012You will need to read the article linked to above to get the details, but so far, nothing has changed. The discussion is about what is likely to happen with Diamond Sports expected to declare bankruptcy very soon.
This does not affect Bally Sports Midwest’s Cardinals telecasts, at least initially.
March 14, 2023 at 1:33 pm #214014A genuine pain in the backside to watch a simple baseball game. There’s more than something inherently wrong with the simple fact that our cable TV system has over 1000 channels that provide no more than possibly 2 or 3 things worth glancing at. I can only speak for myself, but I’d be satisfied with an NBC Saturday Game of the Week with Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek. I wouldn’t see as many games on TV, but I place my sanity a notch or two above baseball.
March 14, 2023 at 9:20 pm #214031There’s something to be said for fewer TV choices.
There were only three TV channels when I was young. On Sunday afternoons you had a choice of: 1) bowling, 2) golf or 3) Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler.
Because I chose #3 I grew up with an immense curiosity and interest in animals. I still adore Marlin and Jim.

March 15, 2023 at 3:02 pm #214045This is starting to worry me. I can only watch Barnaby Jones, Emergency, Cannon, Mannix, Perry Mason, The Streets of San Francisco, The Invaders, and Charlie’s Angels so much.
How’s about we all just start a GoFundMe to keep things rolling?

May 30, 2023 at 9:11 pm #222846MLB takes over the Padres' local TV productions as of tomorrow.

May 30, 2023 at 10:40 pm #222862And here we go….
May 31, 2023 at 6:05 pm #222914Sounds like MLB will continue to Broadcast Padres games on existing networks. However, they may be offering a service to fans that do not get the existing Networks thru MLB Network. Sounds like a monthly subscription for Padres broadcasts will be available fir purchase at a reasonable price. These broadcasts will not be subject to “black out” rules. If true, this is a huge improvement in access to games for Padres fans.
Now, how do the Cardinals get out of the Bally deal?
May 31, 2023 at 6:19 pm #222915It is not so straight forward. Last I heard, the Cardinals own 30% of the network.
May 31, 2023 at 6:43 pm #222916Rich people problems. Worst case, we’ve got KMOX.
May 31, 2023 at 9:12 pm #222919Saw a tweet from someone earlier that said MLB is interested in buying out Bally
June 1, 2023 at 5:02 am #222925MLB will have full control at some point.
June 1, 2023 at 5:23 am #222926We should be cautious if we are assuming MLB having full control will be better.
November 16, 2023 at 7:07 pm #237377Diamond Sports (operator of the Bally Sports RSNs) can move forward with plans to relinquish all of its existing contracts by the end of the 2024 Major League Baseball season, pending the resolution of motions by MLB and Sinclair, a bankruptcy judge ruled Wednesday.
November 16, 2023 at 8:06 pm #237380I am not sure the Cardinals deal with Bally’s/Diamond sports is all that great now….I think they get around $67 million a year and they are in the middle of a 15 year agreement
