As a Cards fan, I hate what the Phillies are doing.

While I never would have done the Soto deal for top prospects, if all the Cardinals add is Quintana and Stratton that is just a total failure from the front office. They definitely need another starter and a 7th or 8th inning Man that is reliable in the bullpen.

The Cards insist that their goal is a championship. Here are results of previous trade deadlines:

    2022:
    Jojo Romero
    Jose Quintana
    Chris Stratton
Jordan Montgomery (while trading their starting CF)…..

    2021:
    Jon Lester
    JA Happ
    TJ Zeuch

    2020:
    Domingo Robles

    2019:
    Tony Cingrani
    Jeffrey Abreu

Actions speak louder than words and these actions show they really don’t give a crap!

I will take Montgomery over Bader anyday, guy is great defensively but he hasn’t done anything at the plate

I got a notification that the Cardinals received a C in a three team deal with As and Reds but can’t find it anywhere now. I assume it was a minor deal. Does anyone have the details of it, or am I just imaging things.

Traded Romine to Cin for cash. Traded a A ball pitcher to OAK for Austin Allen. C with an option left. But will require a 40 man move. He’s got some big league experience and from St. Louis.

Austin Allen may not be a bad pickup for a backup catcher. He has 4 times hit 20+ homers in the minors. Probably AAAA though.

    how utterly underwhelming

somehow made our offense and depth worse by shipping Bader out for 1 year of Montgomery

overpaid for 2 months of Quintana

That Montgomery move might as well be our offseason SP move too from the looks of it…replaces Wainwright
    Jack, Mikolas, Montgomery, Matz, Hudson/Pallante/Libertore/Reyes

We are one Carlson hamstring pull from starting a truly horrendous defensive outfield and little to now offensive production

Bader out for 1 year of Montgomery

Bader and Montgomery are both controlled through 2023. They must believe Bader’s foot is a lasting issue and if he loses a step then his value is greatly diminished.

Actually I think that trade was good. They needed innings out of SP. Pitchers like Oviedo are a dime a dozen. He might make it as a 5th starter for PIT, but more likely is a middle reliever. He wasn’t going to see high leverage innings and wasn’t missing a lot of bats. Stratton has been the victim of a lot of bad luck. The BABIP is something like .370 while having a lower hard contact percentage. His stats are way better than his ERA and should be able to be that reliable 7th and sometimes 8th inning guy they haven’t had. If Hicks can throw strikes it will help too. Nunez might bite in a few years, but he’s limited defensively, probably relegate to DH and the Cardinals have many other in front of him for 1B/DH. I think Nunez has a solid bat, but I don’t disagree with trading him because I don’t think he’s ever more than 100 OPS+ and that’s not enough to carry a bat only player.
Maybe it is “underwhelming”, but I don’t disagree with the moves and being “overwhelming” wouldn’t have guaranteed this team anything and could have really cost the future a LOT.
