Perhaps one way to make a trade for Sean Murphy is to do a trade with Carlson as the centerpiece going back.
In general, the A’s prefer players with 5-6 years of control going back, but if we sent a package of Carlson, Woodford & Yepez they would get two players with the desired control, plus an upgrade in center or RF. A’s upgrade three positions, Cardinals maximize one position.
The A’s outfield, as it stands, is atrocious.
For the Cardinals, moving Carlson would mean pursuing one of Brandon Nimmo, Cody Bellinger or Michael Conforto as a CF, or moving Tyler O’Neill to center and acquiring Benitendi or Brantley for left.
That is a good proposal. The A’s would surely consider that. The Cardinals probably couldn’t trade for both Murphy AND Reynolds. That would require a lot of prospects.
So which would be the better result?
Having Murphy and Brantley/Benintendi or having Reynolds and Vazquez? Either scenario would be good. All I know is that I am a big fan of Reynolds. I think he would be perfect for our lineup. He would give us what we have been hoping for out of Carlson.
I don’t think that package is going to get you Murphy. He’s a top 5 catcher in the league.

If we have to overpay like that, we might as well move to Vazquez and forget Murphy. He’s good but not that good. I would rather give up that package for an elite SP.
Agree with Forsch 100%, with all of the hype, etc, the prospect price tag is going to be more than we expect.
Sign Vazquez and use the prospects for an ace.

I wonder if David Price would be open to an full time BP role. They have been linked to him in 7+ years now at least. That could be a great “under the radar” addition.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Price retire. If not, some team might give him a very cheap one year deal or a ST invite on a minor league deal. The Cardinals were lucky they avoided that 7 year contract he got from the Red Sox.
What does a package for Bieber look like?
Due to the need for a LH bat, I’d assume Gorman is off the table? Walker and Winn I’d put in that group also.
This hasn’t been given a ton of thought, but would Yepez, Libby, Hudson and McGreevy be an overpay?
Not sure I would want to send them three pitchers. Maybe Yepez, Libby, Hudson, and Burleson? Herrera might be a trade candidate now as well.
I wonder what the asking price for Lopez of Miami would be?
CFICT, Cleveland will likely want OFers since they have had some pretty poor play out there lately. I’d say something like O’Neill, Burleson and a minors pitcher of their choice may move the needle. They have a AAA catcher getting close to ready, but perhaps they’d want Herrera. Still, I think something like O’Neill, Burleson and Graceffo could do it. Maybe Noot, Burleson and McGreevy if they like Noot a lot. I’d really like this team with Bieber fronting the rotation, and I don’t think any of those guys are irreplaceable from within the system.
I love Bieber and think they have to give up pretty much for him. The Guardians need offense and SB is out of their price range in a few years so the time is right.
Plan B has to be Pablo Lopez who doesn’t have the gravitas or stats but he may be better long term.GameCard said:

I saw Blingboy made out a lineup vs RHP’s that featured 6 lefty bats, and he wasn’t scrounging around AA to do it.
The only righties were Goldy, Nado and Contreras. The lefties were all off of our postseason roster. Noot in RF, Carlson in CF, Burleson in LF, Edman at SS, Donovan at 2B and Gorman at DH. Is starting 6 lefties vs a RHP not enough? Shall we bench the MVP because he’s not a lefty? HA!
I will put this here instead of hijacking the Contreras thread. As of Willsons signing, we expect Knizner to be the backup catcher.
*Knizner, that’s one of four bench spots taken.
*Burleson looks like the 4th outfielder, today, and plays regularly (looking at you O’Neill). It takes 4+ outfielders.
*Gorman looks like the third middle infielder / 2Bman / DH, behind Edman at SS and Donovan at 2B. As soon as someone needs a day off / ouchie, Donovan goes to their position and Gorman to 2B. This could and has already happened a lot.
*Yepez looks like the DH / PH / 1B and scrambling for PA’s until injuries happen.
*DeJong is still a Cardinal, even if it’s as a 4th middle infielder. I think he should close his eyes when swinging, but we have to count him as a possible bench player until the ax falls.
*Walker will not be ignored. If he’s one of the best 4 outfielders…..
So we have 6 players competing for four bench roles today, and we are looking to add a LH bat?
The first four listed; Knizner, Burleson, Gorman and Yepez, gives us two LH and two RH bench bats.
DeJong? Just cut bait somehow. DFA, trade paid in full (Fowler), whatever.
Walker may need an injury call up. Could be opening day. We may add that mystery LH bat too, using this bench depth in trade.
