Yep, they have been talking about acquiring a catcher since the deadline. Even if its a Narvaez type on a Dickerson contract, they likely add someone.
Every mlb catcher knows Yadi just retired, and StL contends more often than not. StL is a preferred destination now at catcher, and that can work in the FO favor with FA’s.
Upgrading 2022 Molina (0.2 in 270 PA’s) can be done in-house (Knizner 0.8 in 293 PA’s), but it remains to be seen how much of an upgrade the acquisition is beyond Knizner.
Mlb teams averaged 1.6 bwar at catcher last season. Double Knizner PA’s and he was mlb avg last season. We’ll see what the cost is to upgrade, and what funds or prospect capital is left to address a well below avg pitching staff.
I genuinely think that funneling all of the available resources towards a quality addition to the rotation is the best course of action for the Cardinals. Molina was an offensive non-factor last season and the fact is that the HOF catcher at almost 40 years of age was also just a shadow of his younger days behind HP defensively. Knizner may well be an upgrade if he manages to appear in a little over 100 games behind HP in ’23 and I have to believe that the bosses are thinking along those same lines.
When the front office talks about an upgrade at catcher, they might be just teasing us with that old ‘hidden ball trick’ meaning that the so called upgrade at catcher that they talk about may be no more than a catcher that is marginally better than an Austin Romine type guy to back up Knizner.
I agree that they can win the National League Central with what they’ve got especially if pitchers like Pallante, Liberator, Hudson, Woodford, Thompson, Graceffo, a healthy Flaherty and as Scott Boras would say, ‘a mystery pitcher’ show up at spring training and impress. And then if they can acquire Bieber and he can stay healthy, we might really be onto something. (And, yes, I know I’m fantasizing a bit about Bieber.) As it stands now, the way I see it, our 1,2,3, and 4 starting pitchers are Mikolas, Montgomery, that old war machine named Adam Wainwright, and Matz. (Speaking of ‘old’. wouldn’t it be nice to be 42 years old again like Waino.)
I want to say one more thing that is going to be pretty unpopular regarding Brendan Donovan but might have something to do with the unlikely possibility of trading Gorman. It’s that famous Branch Rickey statement adapted by Leo Durocher and, IMHO, could apply to Donovan. It goes like this -‘He can’t hit, he can’t run, he can’t field, he can’t throw. He can’t do a goddam thing, Frank, but beat you.’ ‘He might not have as much ability as some of the other players, I said, but every day you got 100 p3ercent from him, and he was trying to give you 125 percent.’
I know it’s cliched, but I place both Donovan and Edman into the gamer category. You just have to see them play every day for a substantial stretch of games to conclude how valuable they are to adding to the W column. And yeah, “old” at 42 years of age. I’d sure trade places with him…Haha!
No more Miggy to see hit after ’23. I’d have to guess that Cabrera and Albert Pujols were the two most feared hitters in their respective leagues for more than a minute or two. I’ll never forget seeing him as a young man as Florida upset both the Cubbies and the Yankees in ’03. You could plainly see that he was something else. A .308 lifetime hitter with 3000 hits, 500 taters, a TC, and back to backs, is enough in itself, but not only that, he could hit. I’m going out on a limb to guess the great hitter with the overwhelming nubers will go in the same direction as has any pitcher who collected 300 W’s. In any event, I hope Miguel Cabrera is no joke. He’s right up there with great sluggers such as Albert Pujols.
The MLB Network late last night showed possible interest by St. Louis in Trea Turner. It showed a possible lineup with Turner leading off and playing SS and Edman in the #2 hole playing RF.
However, and I keep saying this, I don’t know who comes up with these ridiculous lineups that some so-called experts come up with but the lineup they proposed was pretty bad.

There are no experts. Most of them are offering click bait, throwing scenarios against the wall and hoping that something sticks.
I heard on the radio that the Rays might be looking to move Tyler Glasnow. I wonder if the Cardinals would be interested? He is a talented pitcher but does have an injury history. Of course doing trades with the Rays can be risky. They don’t lose many deals.
A catcher that we could perhaps do a swap for is Haase with the Tigers. They need a power hitter and an outfielder.

The Rangers may regret that signing in a few years b/c of injury history, but props to there ownership for spending money this year and last year on Segar and Simien, at least shows a commitment to try to get better.
You ain’t kidding. I think the Rangers should be forced to submit to a court ordered mandatory mental health evaluation. deGrom’s good, but 5 years at $185 MM? He’ll be 35 in June.

I’d trade O’Neill for Jansen. But we would have to acknowledge going in that Jansen is not going to get more than 250 PA’s. That gets Knizner some AB’s and probably some AB’s for Herrera That’s just the way it is. And the Jays would have to be okay with O’Neill’s injury history. All in all, I think it would be a fair trade. Then send Burleson and Liberatore to Pittsburgh for Reynolds. Overall, the team would be better. Now, of course, everything changes if Cleveland is willing to talk about Bieber. A top of rotation pitcher is still, IMO, our greatest need.
I really wish the birds would’ve bucked up for Realmuto last year if he would’ve come here. The reunion stuff was great for the fans with Yadi, Pujols and such, but it screwed us this year and the next few.
Perhaps one way to make a trade for Sean Murphy is to do a trade with Carlson as the centerpiece going back.
In general, the A’s prefer players with 5-6 years of control going back, but if we sent a package of Carlson, Woodford & Yepez they would get two players with the desired control, plus an upgrade in center or RF. A’s upgrade three positions, Cardinals maximize one position.
The A’s outfield, as it stands, is atrocious.
For the Cardinals, moving Carlson would mean pursuing one of Brandon Nimmo, Cody Bellinger or Michael Conforto as a CF, or moving Tyler O’Neill to center and acquiring Benitendi or Brantley for left.
