Quintana has been better than Syndegaard. And they need to stay out of Soto and that unreasonable cost. Montas has been hurt and would have cost too much. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this trade. Like I’ve said the “Oviedo’s” of the world are a dime a dozen. Many people viewed Oviedo and Rondon together. Rondon was DFA and since DFA by SF. If PIT develops Oviedo into a serviceable SP I’d be completely surprised. If he can get his control figured out and learn to miss some bats, especially HR’s, with that “electic arm” then he could be a valuable pen piece, but I think they’ll be just fine. Nunez bat could be missed and could be what bites them. But with his limitations and being behind Goldschmidt, Yepez, probably even behind a position changed Walker and Burleson (who could both play 1B), and Nunez having to be added to the 40 man this off season he’s an obvious tradable piece to try to get usable, inexpensive help.

I find it hard to believe anyone thinks this trade makes us any better than we were before! It just doesn’t!

Does it automatically make them catch PHIL or MIL? No. But they didn’t have a 5th SP. Have been struggling to get innings out of SP. Before Pallante’s start on Sunday Wainwright+Mikolas IP was basically equal to all other SP combined. They needed innings. Probably still need innings and I hope they are in on Lopez and Bass. Oviedo wasn’t going to get the leverage innings. They are better than they were before the trade.

I hope your right but just don’t see it and do agree this won’t help us catch anybody! If we do happen to squeeze into the playoffs as a 6 seed I truly doubt you’ll see either one of these pitchers pitch in a high level situation! We do need a 5th starter but at his best Quintana will give 5 or 6 innings and that gives out bullpen way too many innings to get a win! But again hope your right!

Wainwright, Mikolas, Quintana (L), Hudson, Pallante

Naughton(L), Thompson (L), Fernandez, Stratton, Hicks, Cabrera (L), Gallegos, Helsley

    ???- McFarland (L)
A 40 man move has to be made with this trade and if it’s not McFarland DFA there is a major issue.

Matz injury and being out for the year made a guy like Quintana necessary. I don’t expect we’ll see Flaherty either.

If they were to add another SP and Pallante back to the pen then it probably forces out Naughton or Thompson and adding another RP with the SP probably forces out Fernandez. But definitely could be upgrades and made them deeper if there is more injuries in the last 2 months.

Like I said if we do more pitching wise this wasn’t a terrible move. If this is all we do pitcher wise, then we aren’t any better than we were. Particularly since Oviedo
Has been ok in the bullpen. Now we lose that and gain another reliever who has been struggling. We might end up worse.

I would rather pitch Quintana over Hudson any day of the week

Mo could have called up Woodford and Liberatore and accomplished just as much.

I am guessing the needed 40 man roster subtraction will be Romine.

Added some SP innings and the player cost is no-one I will miss. Decent enough trade.
Hudson has passed the 100 IP after a handful of IP last season so they may continue limiting his IP, or he may even get pushed to long relief if another SP is acquired.
Mostly covering IP like last deadline, on the cheap.

That is correct, bling. Romine has already been DFAed.

Woodford is in Memphis because Marmol says he cant go deep in games. Só we go out and get a 5 inning starter?

I like Oviedo and it appears he may have turned the corner and on his way to being a decent pitcher. But making this deal is okay. Stratton is probably better than he has been this year and I look for him to be good for us.

Quintana is a guy the Cards like to pursue – a cheap lefty. Now keep Woodford and Thompson on the big club and DFA McFarland and VerHagen, and our pitching will be much better. We may actually be able to hold 5 run leads if Ollie uses his best pitchers.

So glad not to hear that we sent Walker away in a Soto deal. That would be a huge mistake that would haunt us for years.

Totally agree with 82 Willie and blingboy! We have or had guys on our team already
Oviedo, Thompson, Woodford or Liberatore I would rather give the starts to than Quintana! You could argue if these 4 aren’t better than Quintana we need to ship the 4 of them somewhere for a real starting pitcher!

Had to get more SP innings. Had to. Like Lester. Happ, and LeBlanc last year only a little better, I think.

Sure, not much of a move so hopefully there is more to come today….

Matt Moore would be a great pickup, if the price is right.

Has anyone seen controllable starters linked to the Cards?

Quintana is an upgrade over Matz.

Stratton is probably an upgrade over VerHagen.

So I view the trade as a net positive. Oviedo will probably be a swingman for the Pirates but it will be interesting to see what Nunez does. He can really swing the bat. Maybe he will DH for them in the future.

Time will tell of course but I would take Matz healthy over Quintana every day of the week!if this is all we do the deadline has been another dismal failure!

Quintana has been pretty good this year and Matz has been a bust.

Matz is injured but represents a better ceiling than Quintana. For this year, Quintana is healthy and pitching so it’s an upgrade. Who knows after this, however.

I don’t see how Matz is better than Quintana. The only upside yes Matz is younger but career so far it is not even close Quintana has been better.
