Respect him as a player, not crying over his personal services contract. Why a man should deserve “accolades” for honoring a commitment he signed is beyond me, and maybe speaks more towards how we define honor and character in this day and age than anything else.

A mentally strong person in the spotlight realizes that remaining professional is always the best course of action to succeed. Im 41 years old. If i were 24 or 25 and pegged to be a future mlb star you would probably have to barricade me in my hotel room from keeping me out of trouble. So instead of dumping on flaherty for being an idiot, its maybe better to recognize just how mentally strong some of the others are in the game. That being said, we should learn our lesson next time someone wants to make political and/or inflamitory statements instead of just doing their job.

“I think Mr. Goldschmidt will be there for awhile.”

Id agree GS- but if we can say he wont be a starter in 2022 (he wont) then we are looking at 2023 and beyond with a rising % chance of him making the club.

If we take it as a given that the team is at least competitive, and also a given that gorman is hitting, the club has no real incentive to bring him up early. Also he’s 20 and could certainly personally benefit from the seasoning in the minors.

So yes if its 2023 and the club is competitive…and we have a stop gap 2B AND gorman is tearing it up, will they really want to start his clock? Not a rhetorical question…if his bat is playing all good, but if they know they have a 22 year old gem in the minors why do they bring him up?

Then its 2024, last year of goldys contract, who knows what he or gorman are doing, who knows if this is even a relevant conversation anymore? Just based on past outcomes, your odds would say its not going to be.

The FO knows more than i do, but i dont get the gorman 2b stuff, at least not this year. Higher floor i guess? But somebody has to play 1b, and id be shocked if we didnt have DH after this next mlbpa/mlb negotiation. If he proves himself with his bat we will find room. He hasnt, not even close.

Gorman just as likely as jordan walker? Who knows, hes done nothing short of rookie ball to prove he can be a major league player. Just saying, his rope will be longer than others but he still has to actually hit in the minors.

“I don’t believe “time will tell” is topic appropriate.”

With most players id agree. But for his production lines (which have really been amazingly consistent) he’s known to be a slow starter and a strong finisher.

Def different than taking an 18 game sample in july considering its starting another full season after a crazy 2020 etc, i can certainly agree there. But im not really worried about him unless his line is the same a month from now. Just my opinion.

My .02$, the people with capital make the mlb, not the players, sorry but its true.

You can certainly argue some players are undervalued/paid, but this isnt US Steel. If you dont want to be involved with the mlb dont consume it, and let’s certainly not involve anyone in the cesspool that is DC.

That being said I feel far worse for the fans’ wallets than the players, and its not even close.

1- as brian said goldy has been known to have slow starts
2- hes aging and yes his skills will more likely than not naturally diminish
3(to dovetail #1) hes also known as a strong finisher, i dont have stats in my pocket but remember seeing many games (when i used to be able to watch ba$eball at home) where he has been hands down the best player in baseball for september or some larger portion of the season after the break.

If there’s one player on this team im not worried about given his past performance and realistic future expectations for production, its paul goldschmidt

Its a marathon, if we can finish april at 500 with KK being effective and mikolas coming back, im cautiously optimistic, bader back is not a plus, just my opinion. We need bats on balls, OF defense not an issue.

Bats should come around, just need SP to be avg to above avg and offense has to do their job.

pugs i like your optimism- but if you can catch any dbacks games watch him. He is spitting seeds at anything not in the zone and walking, and crushing the alternative. Just starting to wonder if its a scouting issue within our FO, he looks like an all star C.

two ships passing in the night, wrong place wrong time… carson got the better end. Just think he looks like he could be a stud in near future, and its not like mlb teams dont have a book on carson kelly at this point.

the obvious pitching headline is reyes and his 9 pitch inning, fastball and curve were look and he could locate.

Gant looked good also, was terrible squeezed by angel hernandez (surprise) but looked good.

my friend (who has obviously been working from home too long) recognized the “rock paper scissors” from about the 25 second mark saying “we were at that game!”

And we were, i got in the video..for two seconds, far left of screen, “gray” long sleeves and blue shorts, let my 15min begin! : )

Those corporations arent buying green seats and suites because they feel compelled to, its an investment. And in their opinion, it pays off. That could certainly change. My company has green seats and we are allowed to treat them to those tickets as long as “business is discussed.” This could change with a stroke of a pen, and if it does there is no doubt in my mind we will dump them. Then prices will go down.

Personally, I dont like the salary cap for baseball. Its the only one of the 4 major sports where top 10 talent can literally never see the playing field at the highest level from draft day and its not a huge surprise. In fact I’d guess it might be more probable than not.

So drafting is so important, even beyond the first few rounds, maybe more important. I love seeing a rays team compete with a team spending 3 times what they are spending. I also love seeing a team hit bottom then rebuild, although i also realize im not the kind of fan that mlb is trying to attract.

I couldnt agree more with brian here. No personal offense intended here bbcran, but regardless of your(or others) personal beliefs, why do you care about what someone makes in a free market if its not coming out of your pocket? And if it is coming out of your pocket (you want to take the fan $ aspect into account) then choose not to spend.

I think most people would fight to get a 25% raise if they had the option, especially if you had a small window in your life where your body, athletic abilty and skillset allowed you to make millions of dollars. If you wouldnt, or you would take that money and donate it to charity, congrats you are a better person than myself, and most people in the united states, no snark intended there.

id bet my 401k flaherty is either traded before, or gone at FA. Not that i wasnt also at his age, but the kid is way too immature. The twitter post was embarrassing, his level of hubris for someone with such little experience is blah- we will squeeze what we can out of him and see ya later.

well…id like to act outraged, but it would be feigned outrage. I like adam, and i always will. Also, id take his word over an ex angles staffer unless he has proof via text etc. If anything maybe this causes him to just come to the table for real talks with dewitt.

Probably been addressed somewhere earlier in this thread but..

Waino left arguably almost 40mm on the table when he inked his contract. You can argue he didnt produce to the level if you want, but thats simply a fact. Yadi got his thank you contract…Nobody was going to give him that much money in an extension.

Pay waino (I think they will) an above avg salary with a club option, and good incentives…

If yadi wants to walk, let him go. I’ve seen enough of his pujols type behavior that at this point I wouldnt care much. Yadi cares about yadi and his brand, and not much else.
