It sounds to me like they might have non-tendered Carlson this winter had he not been traded.
Sounds about right. It even sounds obvious after thinking a bit about how it transpired and who was exchanged.
Good stuff, 1td. To me, it’s still worth the time about once a year to spend about an hour on YouTube watching clips of Lasorda, Ditka, Knight, etc.
Mo just has to convince potential trading partners of the almost certain change of scenery bounce. He’s armed with a few examples of convincing evidence to cite.
forsch & 1td, you guys are forgetting about Tommy Lasorda. He had an awful ERA to boot. How’d he ever make it? Plus, he pitched to Jack Clark, lol.
The triple was smoked, a tough to read type of liner. Carlson didn’t have the luxury of making one wrong step. His first step was diagonally inward and should’ve been lateral. He corrected course quickly, but there was no margin for error. His route needed to be almost perfect to make that play. If his tracking had been perfect, he would’ve probably caught it in stride without any kind of ridiculous dive. As it was, he had no chance after the initial misstep.
This discussion makes me think of another scenario that has crossed my mind a few times before. Say a manager wanted to take his reliever out after one or two batters, so he gives him the wink. At that point the reliever claims he suddenly has acute arm pain or some other fabrication that would be hard to disprove on the spot. How do the umps handle that one?
We do know based on recent happenings that teams will cheat and it should be prevented. It would also be a terrible look for MLB if the next day the medical professionals say the guy’s arm is destroyed, his career is probably over, and the additional 15 pitches he had to throw after the injury likely contributed to it all. Lawsuits are fun.
Of course this would never happen, but I never say never, lol.
It’s not unusual to hear the phrase “generational talent” to describe Albert Pujols. Generational talent comes along once every…what…generation?

I also have to admit I was amazed by Skenes’ dominance at LSU and thought he was as close to a sure thing as possible. So I get where Jnevel is coming from. But yeah, he’s got a lot of climbing left to reach the Pujols-sphere.
And it’s not fair sometimes, but I guess Romero gets the W.

Better hope regression to Pythagorean expectancy is not a thing, haha. Close losses are the worst. Just noticed the Reds are on the opposite Pythagorean extreme from the Cards. Sucks for them.

The all caps emphasis for EVERY and LIVE is theirs, not mine. I guess they are legally cleared to cheat us a few games (e.g. Apple) due to the cleverly crafted “or on demand” part. The lower case for de-emphasis on that part is also theirs, not mine.
Speaking of Brooks, I met him at a collector’s show a few years ago. Great guy, and we lost him not too long ago.
The 1970 World Series was the third one I watched as a young boy. I didn’t like the way the first two went. I enjoyed the third one and was in awe of Brooks.

Lynn could’ve had a better game score if he had hit the first 16 batters of the game before being yanked by Oli. Of course, the fights might’ve been interesting, haha.

I didn’t see anybody’s arguing that pitching, defense and timely hitting are not the keys. I think it was more like there’s not enough timely hitting. Show them a team that had decent pitching, good defense and timely hitting to the tune of 27th out of 30 for RISP that won a WS and maybe you’ll change their minds. Maybe it’s happened.

I watched the Nats broadcast and post game they were analyzing why they lost. I’m paraphrasing here, but the analyst said because they keep making the same types of stupid mistakes over and over.
He pointed out Winker being thrown out at 3B (by Lib I think) on the sac bunt attempt. Said it was a good bunt, but Winker got a terrible secondary lead and that’s why Martinez was lecturing him in the dugout later. Then he mentioned the unexplainable passed ball on a pitch right down the middle where Contreras struck out and Winn scored the winning run. Finally, he said Nunez was not going on contact on the Yepez lineout double play. Said it was just not being smart and gave a stat where evidently the Nats lead the universe in outs at 3B. Sounded like the travails of the Cards not too long ago.
Interesting accounting on the stats. That’s an unearned run for the Nats because of the zombie runner, but it’s still a blown save for Helsley.
