This four game sweep at the hands of the Cubs will effectively end our season. We are doomed.

At least we got a hit yesterday. The Reds didn’t even get one. Blake Snell and the Giants no-hit the Reds last night. 3-0 the final at Riverfront Stadium.
I saw that this was the first complete game Snell has ever pitched. Man, the game has sure changed.
You never think a game is a “must win” when there are some 50 games left, but this one comes close to that. Lose today and tomorrow and it feels like the season is over. Win the next two and you are still fighting for a post season appearance. Split the next two and it is more of a “play out the string” mentality, although not quite a doomsday sense.

Gorman has seen success vs Taillon in the .800 ops range. A managed good start for him.

Giants also got a CG, 1-0 shutout from Webb the other day, Bikemike. And you’re not kidding about how things have changed. It’s as if a CG shutout is almost as rare as a no hitter.
The Reds beat up Taillon pretty badly in his last outing. 6 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. OHopefully the Cards can do the same today.
Indeed 1TD. And a multiple pitcher no hitter is more common than a single pitcher no hitter.
It all goes back to the advent of the speed gun and emphasis on velocity above all else. Pitchers never get a chance to let up anymore. And all those stats about “third time through the order.”
Pitching staffs are so deep these days. Used to be your starter was often the best option, even if he was a bit tired, than a reliever. But now the best pitchers on your staff might be relievers.
Yeah, when I hear the third time through theorem, I’m always reminded of a time when many of the great SP’ers had a reputation of actually getting stronger and increasing in effectiveness as the game progressed. The approach with these guys was that you had to get to them early or you had no chance.
We are currently watching our playoff chances crumble before our eyes while simultaneously watching the Cubs resurrected like Lazarus. This is precisely why I was rooting for the Brewers to beat the Cubs recently. The Cubs need to be put down like a sick old dog.
This is why I hate playing at Wrigley Field. It’s these games that the Cubs and their fans get totally fired up for. Beating the Cardinals is almost like a playoff atmosphere for the Cubs. The fans are intense and the Cub players play with the most intensity the entire year. It’s literally the biggest regular season game(s) of the year for them. It absolutely makes their season and it’s always been hard for St. Louis to overcome all of the above.

Yep, but if you are going to be a post season team you gotta win these games. We are just a bit shy of a truly good team, but have competed with mostly decent pitching. That Helsley meltdown was especially ill timed.
The Cardinal/Cubs series played at Wrigley are always my favorite regular season games. Especially when they’re played in the sunshine on a Saturday. To me, it’s the very picture of what a baseball game should be.
Helsley’s been a tremendously effective closer for more than a minute or two, so it’s difficult to throw any criticism in his direction. But I’ve come to notice that he has a knack for a meltdown at some of the most inopportune times.
Hasn’t the rookie, McGreevy, been the most effective starting pitcher for the Cardinals recently? The way some others have been pitching, maybe another start for McGreevy is warranted, sooner than later.
The Cubbies jumping out to this early 4-1 lead is placing the Cardinals in serious jeopardy of getting their backsides handed to them in this 4 game set at Wrigley. A sweep would be none too nice.
It was one start so I wouldn’t read too much into it. Gray is clearly #1 and Fedde will likely pitch like a #3 the rest of the way. Gibson is a poor man’s #4 and Lynn Pallante are poor man’s #5s. I lost faith on McGreevey for a while in the minors, but he reworked his pitch usage in June and looks like he could be a #5.
Especially with the way things are going lately, I really wish the Cards would have taken that hybrid approach more I mentioned. Trading Gibson to get something out of him would help for down the road. As mentioned by me and others, this team is lucky to have the record it does with our run differential. It looks like the tides of luck are turning and things will even out by the end of the year.
Just about the worst start possible. Behind 4-1 after two innings.
Then a leadoff lucky bloop double by Pham and once again they can’t do anything. This team literally can’t score. It seems to me the hitting coach needs to go – and needs to go NOW!
This will probably be a final score of 7-2 Cubs. Then the sweep on ESPN Sunday night.
