There’s only been 4 elite pitchers/ players in the last 23 years? Come on.

To be fair, Pujols was a little more than elite. Not many players are MVP candidates for over a decade straight, with basically no blips on the radar.

Of guys that debuted since Albert, it’s basically Mike Trout and maybe Miguel Cabrera and Clayton Kershaw who could be classed as top of their game for long enough to teach the rarified air that El Hombre did. Even then, maybe only Trout would be considered an all timer at his position. Guys like Verlander, Beltre (who debuted before Albert but I’d generally consider a contemporary), Scherzer, Betts, Posey and Yadi probably would qualify in the next tier of guys who were All Star level for a long time and will be Hall of Famers when their time comes. ARod and Bonds played during Albert’s era but of course the PEDs sully their legacy. There are others who will make the HOF as well (Goldy and Arenado from our own roster among them, in all likelihood).

Anyway, I do believe the statement is correct that a guy even in Albert’s class probably comes along every 5ish years. One as truly great as Albert is more like a 20 year phenomenon. For any MLB team to get more than 1 in a generation is a blessed event.

You bet, and it seems like there are so many great talents now that having any one stand out is more difficult. I would settle for the Cards having a future borderline Hall of Famer coming out of the system soon, because we are lacking in consistent All Star talent coming through the minors for quite some time.
